Government Employee Shows Vending Makes Cents

What It’s About

Seeing the coins drop, a government employee starts her own vending machine hustle.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Lakinya has some important advice about seeking help, “When I first started I struggled with finding a location for my vending machines. If I could change anything, I would have found someone to mentor me to guide me down the right path.”

Fun Fact

There are over two million vending machines in the USA but with a population of over 320 million, there’s also plenty of room for growth.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1485
Lakinya Francis works a government job in what she describes as a fairly serious environment. That seriousness was a big part of why she began looking for something different.

Lakinya noticed the ‘vending machine guy’ who came around twice a week to restock the machines. With that amount of regularity, she thought, he must be making fairly good money. So she began researching exactly how the business worked.

So here’s an important fact: it turns out that many vending machines are privately owned by individuals rather than large companies. Lakinya was ready to be one of those individuals. She put her coin in the slot, and waited for it to drop.

She also knew from reading that a good location had regular foot traffic and a high turnover of people. Of course, finding a location and having the business owner agree to host her machines there are two different things. Many businesses she approached said no to her offer, which went like this…

Lakinya would stock the machine with products, as well as install and maintain it for free. In exchange, she’d keep whatever profit she made on top of the original purchase prices.

At first she struggled with the rejection. In her mind, it was a no brainer for the business. To convince them of this she added a few more key points to her pitch.

She sold them on the benefits to their customers and employees, stressing that they’d have to do literally nothing to maintain the machine. Furthermore, Lakinya would include them in the product selection process so businesses could be certain the vending products would fit their demographic. She sold the whole concept behind the business name, iKrave Vending.

She’d taken herself from novice to expert and felt confident she could teach others to do the same. Using the iKrave name, she created an Instagram account and began posting helpful tips for those interested in vending, by tagging them as business-related posts. (You can follow her if you’d like @iKravevending.)

She also interacted with many business-related accounts and eventually built up a small following of her own. By pitching to that audience, Lakinya now makes almost as much from her consulting as she does from her vending machines, which still generate her twenty-five hundred dollars per month.

Not one to let things fizzle out, Lakinya is expanding into different types of vending machines. First, beauty products which have a much higher average purchase price. Then, the launch of a new live bait vending machine in Key West, the first of its kind. From soda fizz to fish, Lakinya shows vending machines make so much cents.

Q&A: What’s the best software to write a nonfiction book?

What It’s About

Today’s caller is looking for digital tools to help write a book.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1484

Today’s caller has a common New Year’s resolution: to write a book. When I say “common,” I’m not making light of it … I think it’s a great idea! I’ve learned to never encourage someone to write a book who doesn’t want to—but if you do, it’s a valiant goal that you’ll find to be meaningful no matter what happens with it.

But this is Side Hustle School, of course, and we’re all about practical, helpful tips to make things easier. The caller is wondering about software and tools, so I’ll give him three recommendations, including the software I’ve used to write my last three or four books. We’ll also talk about the least useful software—something you definitely want to avoid if your goal is to be creative.

“You’ve featured several people who write romance novels … what about nonfiction books? I’m looking for the best tool or software to make this as easy as possible. Should I just open a blank page in Microsoft Word and start writing, or is it better to work from an outline and use the tool or software to guide the way? “

Q&A: Is there a payment processor for very small transactions?

What It’s About

A listener wants to sell digital items for very small amounts of money.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1483

Today’s caller hopes to sell virtual items for gamers at very low prices. This creates a problem—most payment processors charge fees that make this business model unviable. Is there anything that can be done?

I was a little stumped with this question. Sometimes it’s good to make sure you’re not missing the forest for the trees, so I took a step back and tried to consider it from that perspective.

“Hey Chris, this is Kelly from Chicago and I’ve been listening to the show for a couple of years now and still love the puns. I want to sell virtual items for gamers, including some that cost less than a dollar. My concern is that most merchant accounts, including PayPal and Stripe, charge a per-transaction fee in addition to a percentage. I understand them taking a 3-4% cut, but if you’re selling an item for 50 cents and there’s a 25-cent transaction fee, that’s half the cost of the item! Is there a payment processor I can work with to solve this problem? Or perhaps some way to use cryptocurrency and have no charges at all since it’s strictly peer-to-peer? What do you think?”

Q&A: How can I rent a small private workspace?

What It’s About

A caller working from home realizes it’s great until it isn’t.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1481

Have you been spending a lot of time indoors, talking to someone on the other side of the screen … perhaps with a partner or small child or roommate nearby who’s also trying to work online?

It’s a club none of us wanted to be in. I especially feel for everyone in small apartments or in a situation where there are multiple people sharing the internet connection and trying to make phone calls in a small shared space.

Might there be a way to create some distance for yourself—and not just in pandemic times, but to be able to focus on your side hustle in the midst of all the busyness?

In today’s story, a listener is feeling cooped up and wants to find a small space outside her home to dedicate to her electronics repair service.

“Hi Chris, this is Sara and I just started listening after a friend recommended it. I’ve been working at home recently, and it’s a little crowded. To devote more time to my side hustle repairing headphones and other electronic items, I’d like to rent a small workplace near my home. Among other things, I’m thinking it would help to separate the time I spend on my day job from the time I spend on my after-hours job. I looked at getting office space, but it seemed really expensive. Is there somewhere I could rent for maybe $200-300 a month, or perhaps even less? What’s your thoughts on this? Thanks! “

Behavior Analyst Creates Resources for Parents and Teachers

What It’s About

Twin sisters create resources to help children with autism and their families.

Words of Wisdom

Amelia shares important clarity regarding monetizing a blog, “if you’re looking to make money quickly – don’t start a blog. It was 15 months before we started seeing real growth. We could have probably taken a faster track by creating an online course first instead.”

Fun Fact

ABA has been around since the 1970s, and the science continues to develop.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1480
Amelia Dalphonse found her calling 17 years ago while she was teaching with Head Start, a program that provides early childhood education to low-income children and families. She’d worked with all kinds of kids over the years, but one, in particular, stood out. He was a four-year-old boy with frequent tantrums and very little verbal communication. Amelia and her fellow teacher wanted to help him, so they began researching the boy’s behavior and discovered that he might be autistic.

Wanting to learn more, Amelia then began studying Applied Behavior Analysis, a scientific approach that can be used to reduce challenging behavior and teach new skills in children with autism. Amelia liked Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA strategies because they’re easy for non-professionals to learn and can have lasting benefits for the child if they are used consistently.

Not too long after she started her research, she ended up switching jobs to work with children with autism. She wanted to understand more, so she decided to pursue a master’s degree and become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), again specializing in working with children with autism.

And this is what brings us to the side hustle part of the story. Amelia started a blog called accessibleaba.com, hoping to share insights to help parents understand more about the field and their child. Soon afterwards, around Christmas 2018, her twin sister Dianna came for a visit. Dianna enjoys writing, so she offered to write some posts.

They started out blogging just for parents, but eventually expanded to have a separate blog for each of their target audiences: parents, teachers, and professionals. Together, their blogs get over 40,000 page views a month.

Amelia admits that as difficult as the pandemic has been, it’s also been the catalyst that has pushed them to work even harder. They’re bringing in around $1,500/month through a mix of book sales, membership fees, and supervision services. However, they have really just started to focus on monetization. For most of 2020, they focused solely on growing the blog and developing the courses.

They know that if they want to make more money, they need to come up with a better product or offer, improve their marketing, reach a new audience, or take some other action. One of those things—or perhaps all of them—is exactly what they plan to do.

Q&A: How about an app to help people care for plants?

What It’s About

Today’s caller has an idea to create a plant care app. Is this an evergreen idea?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1479

What is your idea? How can we turn it into reality this year?

In today’s Q&A: A green-thumbed, code-savvy listener wants to make an app to help people not kill their plants. Let’s see what we can do with this so-fresh-and-so-green idea.

“Hey Chris, this is Brian from San Diego and I’ve been listening to the show for a couple of years now. Thanks for all the help.

I’ve always had a green thumb, and I like to code. That’s why my idea is to build an app to help people take care of their houseplants. It will include lots of FAQs and troubleshooting, as well as notifications to remind people when to water. The only thing I can’t do is keep people from overwatering … but I’ll try! What do you think of this idea? “

Woodworker Proves Money Grows On Trees

What It’s About

Shocked by the cost of “live edge” furniture, a father and son team carve up a new hustle building their own.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

When it comes to side hustles and life, John says that it is important to push yourself and grow. “Do something that scares you fairly often. I think the quote is: “do something that scares you EVERY DAY”, but we’re coming off of 2020 and I think we all need a break. But seriously, it’s important to take calculated risks in life and grow from whatever the outcome is.”

Fun Fact

People have been handcrafting furniture for hundreds of years, dating back to Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. The oldest known chairs date back to 5000 B.C and were used ceremonially in Ancient Egypt.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1478
In the summer of 2019, John Krygiel was getting ready to move into a new apartment. So far so good, but there was one problem. He needed new furniture and was especially set on finding the perfect coffee table.

He wanted something rustic, earthy, and asymmetrical. He began searching online, and found the exact type of style that he was envisioning. It was a type of furniture called “live edge.” Essentially, the furniture looks like it was cut right out of a tree.

Although John fell in love with the style, he was not a fan of the price tag. It was unbe-leaf-ably expensive! What a shock. But fortunately for him (and for the sake of this story), he wasn’t ready to give up on his dream table just yet. He figured that if he couldn’t afford to buy it, maybe he could make it himself—with the help of his dad, who John describes as a “master woodworker.”

From there, Origin Woodworks was born. John already had an old auto shop that he ran a lawn care business through, so he decided to base Origin Woodworks there too. He also spent around one thousand dollars in new tools.

John said that he got his first paying customer from tools he learned from Side Hustle: From Idea to Income in 27 Days. He said that he really tried to take what he learned from the book and imagine it from the perspective of a client.

In the first year, John made about $6,000 from his side hustle. At this point, most of his customers have come through word-of-mouth. He notes the great thing about selling furniture is that every piece he makes is a potential “ad” for a new client.

In the future, he hopes to get a piece of furniture from Origin Woodworks in every home in Missouri. Until then, he’s enjoying his creative outlet that doubles as a business. Not only that, but he’s found great satisfaction being able to give back. He donates a portion of all profits to One Tree Planet, a nonprofit organization that plants trees around the world wherever they are most needed.

Q&A: Where can I find royalty-free music?

What It’s About

Today’s caller is in search of royalty-free music to use for a podcast. Any ideas?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1477

You can’t just use anyone’s music because it belongs to them. A major video game recently got in trouble because it included songs they weren’t supposed to use, and then had to publicly tell everyone who purchased it to disable the music in the game’s settings until a patch was available.

This applies to you as well, if you have a podcast or YouTube channel or any other medium that might use music—or if you’d like to start one. Where can you find royalty-free music you can use without worry?

“I’m starting a podcast this year! And maybe a YouTube channel as well. I’ll keep you posted, but here’s one problem I’m having for now. Where can I find music I can use as an intro track and maybe some background throughout, without getting into trouble and preferably without paying? I know that YouTube especially is very strict about taking down videos that are improperly using other people’s music. I would hate to have a popular video with lots of views but then lose everything because I made a mistake with a few seconds of music.”

Q&A: Any ideas to monetize my visual poetry?

What It’s About

A caller seeks advice on how to monetize their visual artwork.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1476

In today’s episode: a visual artist hopes to monetize her creative “words and images” creations. Might a subscription model be the best option? Could there be something else she hasn’t considered?

Selling art is a challenge—it’s very different from selling a product that meets a practical need. Still, let’s see what we can figure out!

“Hi, Chris, this is Lisa from Vancouver, Canada. I’ve been listening to the show for well over a year now and I really enjoy it. I’m a visual artist who works with image and text, the text element being original poetry written by me. The problem is that while people seem to really like my work and spend a good chunk of time reading it and sometimes buying it, I realize that most do not see hanging poetry on their wall in a frame. I must put it somehow and I’d like to earn money from what I’m good at. My cars have been more successful, but that market is very competitive. My question is, how do I get my poetry out of a framed visual art piece and into onto something people want to buy with a subscription model of some sort work? I’d like to contribute to the world in a positive way and I’m open to any suggestions you may have. Many thanks for all you do.”
