Q&A: Is it legal to sell a guide about magic mushrooms?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wonders if their idea is just a psychedelic dream.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1904

For more than a decade, Oregon was my home base, and the city of Portland in particular was known as being especially open to new ideas. After legalizing cannabis in 2014, the state recently began allowing the legal use of Psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms.

That’s some background for today’s topic. A listener wants to write a guide to Psilocybin, including reviews, best practices, and how-to—but of course, this wonder drug is not yet legal in most parts of the U.S. and in most other countries.

What then does that mean in terms of their ability to sell a guide that provides information?

“Psilocybin is now legal in several states, and it’s only a matter of time before it expands across the country just like legal cannabis. For now, however, it’s still early days and what’s legal in one state or jurisdiction remains illegal elsewhere. This brings me to my question: I don’t want to sell the actual product, just a guide to its benefits and a directory of where to find it within those legal states. Could I get in trouble for selling this elsewhere even though it’s perfectly legal in some places?”

Failure Friday: “The reality was not as awesome as the dream…”

What It’s About

A young couple learns an important lesson as they launch their out of normal business.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1903

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Brittain Kovac and Josh Schukman. We told the successful story of their project on Episode #1751: Nomadic Couple Starts Vintage Camper Rental Biz.

Here they return to talk about a couple of difficult parts along the way, including some advice that I really think a lot of people should pay attention to when they’re thinking about following a dream.

Nothing wrong with following dreams! But your dream will have the best odds of success (i.e. coming true!) if you’re willing to get into some nuts and bolts of it. Brittain and Josh will tell us more.

Q&A: When should I go full-time?

What It’s About

Today’s listener (from Hawaii!) wants to know when it’s time to go all-in.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1901

I hope you survived the ides of March!

A caller from Hawaii is wondering if it’s a good time to transition from his second part-time job into his primary side hustle. What are the most important factors to consider in making this decision?

“Aloha. My name is Clarence from Hawaii. I read your Side Hustle book and I’m catching up listening to your show. My question is when or how should I transition from a second part time job to fully invest my time into my side hustle? I’m part of the group of people who have a second job. I see the freedom that having an extra source of income brings. But I also want to start a side hustle with my passions. Thank you, as always, for bringing tips and collecting inspirational stories of people living their best lives. Hope to see you in Hawaii. Mahalo.”

“Geek Chic” Skincare Blogger’s Persona Pays Off

What It’s About

A young entrepreneur makes up a successful beauty blog.

Words of Wisdom

If you’re looking to start an online blog Jenny says, “Make SEO a priority from the start! And you don’t have to invest in expensive tools, there are a ton of free resources and tools available for you to get started!”

Fun Fact

Jenny was once an extra on the Soap Opera, One Life to Live.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1900
In 1999 while all the adults were worried about a glitch in their code that would lead to Y2K and the subsequent end to civilization, 11-year-old Jenny Wu was busy creating her very first website. The theme? Pokemon. Complete with sparkling purple background and comic sans font.

She loved collecting rocks and stickers, so Pokemon came naturally. Though she wasn’t yet coding, using a drag-and-drop tool to make the website, constructing it was fun and creative, an outlet that would inspire Jenny to become the successful developer (day job) and blogger (side job) she is today.

I should mention that Jenny was in Taiwan back then, where she was born. She now lives in Toronto.

After the Pokemon site, twelve-year-old Jenny decided to launch the blog that would eventually become her current side hustle. Approximately a decade later, she got serious about it and renamed it Geeky Posh.

As someone with a bit of a geek bent herself and who firmly lives by the saying that “knowledge is power,” she decided to focus her content on what truly mattered: do skincare products work, and are any of their wild claims founded on actual facts?

To answer these questions, she decided to dig into evidence-based studies to investigate whether or not the ingredients do what their packaging suggests. She then tested the products on herself and filmed the process. Her little lab of learning became fodder for her blog.

Though her messaging was in place, that wasn’t enough to make actual cash. To do that, Jenny decided to focus on ads.

The first ad provider she chose was Google Adsense, and it produced only pennies. She was relieved when another one invited her to their network. But her inner web developer was annoyed with their buggy platform. Finally, Jenny landed on Mediavine, who she still works with today.

Mediavine supplied her with support and training on best practices. It wasn’t long before her ad campaigns were optimized and turning profits. What used to be pennies climbed to an average of $2,000 dollars a month.

These days, Jenny’s considering a shift towards wellness work, yet another competitive industry that has a tendency to distort the facts. Instead, she plans to stand out in much the same way she’s done with Geeky Posh: by focusing on facts and engaging readers by guiding them towards proven results.

First $1,000: “Every day, I dropped off hundreds of orders at the post office…”

What It’s About

There’s no flossing around with this origin story.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1899

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Jodi Breau in Maine. We first featured back on Episode #1105: Librarian Invents Eco-Friendly Dental Floss. So what about their first $1,000—how did they make that happen, what did it feel like, and what did they learn?

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Thanks to Jodi for telling us about their first $1,000. I hope you found it encouraging. Check out their website at dentallace.com or follow her on Facebook or Instagram at Dental Lace.

Q&A: Will this “all you can craft” event venue subscription work?

What It’s About

Today’s listener has a crafty idea for a subscription model. Could it work?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1898

Our caller today has a friend with a local arts space. This caller has been tasked with helping out in the department of marketing. They’re going to share one of their ideas with us and see if I can offer any helpful feedback.

“A friend of mine has started a small arts space where she hosts pottery classes. Each class brings in a few students, but it’s been slow-going so far. There are also a few other teachers there, most of whom are new and just doing it part-time.

Since I have a day job in marketing, I’ve been trying to think of ways to help. One of my ideas is to offer an “all you can craft” subscription where students pay a monthly fee and get access to all sorts of different crafts. It would keep them coming back, expose them to things they might not otherwise try, and provide more predictable revenue for my friend.

Do you think this is a good idea? If so, how should I bring it up as a suggestion? I want to be helpful without trying to tell my friend what to do.”

Q&A: Should I buy a rental home with friends?

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to know if it’s wise to invest with friends.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1897

If you want to get into rental properties, does it ever make sense to do it with a group of friends? If you wanted to try it, what potential pitfalls would you hope to avoid?

“I’d like to buy my first rental property, but with a twist: I want to invest with several friends, so that we all own shares. We think this will decrease our individual exposure while also allowing us to buy a bigger property, or maybe even a multi-unit property.

What could go wrong??

Just kidding; I know a lot of things could go wrong, so that’s why I’m asking. If we make sure we’re in agreement on the important parts of the partnership, especially how we make decisions regarding renters and maintenance, and we get this all spelled out properly in a contract, do you think that mitigates the potential problems? And do you know of anyone who’s done this successfully … without it turning into something that ends up being featured on Failure Friday?”
