Distracted Coach Creates Accountability Software

What It’s About

When distraction rears its ugly head, this coach creates software to keep it at bay.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

What are some of Taylor’s top tips for staying on task while working remotely? To start, optimize your workspace—make it a place you want to spend time in. If you feel happy in that space, you’ll be empowered by it.

Fun Fact

38% of the workday is wasted by distractions—and the average user has 76 sessions on their phone. U.S. consumers spend $46 billion annually on products and services to improve productivity.

Notes from Chris

Episode 751

After becoming a remote worker, Taylor Jacobson went from being a star performer for his employer to almost getting fired due to his inability to focus. What’s an independent worker to do, when they struggle with holding themselves accountable?

Enter Focusmate, productivity software for people who work alone. Taylor calls his product “virtual coworking”. He defines it as enabling two people who work anywhere in the world to pair up as accountability partners. Partners work side by side—virtually—while working on their respective projects.

Taylor came up with the idea while working with one of his coaching clients. Prior to creating Focusmate, Taylor spent several years working as an executive coach, with clients such as Yale and Cornell. One day Taylor and his client (both of whom had problems focusing on their tasks) decided to experiment. They got on Skype together for a couple hours, keeping the video on while they worked. They messaged each other with every task to stay accountable. Taylor was writing a blog article; his client was making a presentation. He said it worked insanely well—neither had ever been so productive.

That experience gave him the idea for Focusmate, and he immediately got to work making it happen.

The idea was if someone wants to work virtually with an accountability partner, all they need to do is schedule work time, in 50-minute blocks, based on availability.

Startup costs for Focusmate were approximately several thousand dollars. Taylor and his team of two are still working on price points for the Focusmate service. They earn what Taylor calls “100% donation-based revenue”. Their current revenue is $700 per month.

They are also running an investment campaign where users can pay now to invest in the service in exchange for a future discount. Over $88,000 has been raised so far. For various donation price points, contributors receive subscriptions and credits for friends.

They’re currently averaging 400 users per week. One common theme from users is how the tool has not only helped them significantly increase productivity but also decreased anxiety or guilt. Because they get more work done, they no longer feel guilty or worry about uncompleted tasks during their downtime. One user said in three months time they’ve been able to complete projects they had put off for over a year.

Taylor now works on Focusmate with the hopes of making it his “full-time” job. However, he did retain his biggest executive coaching client, which is paying his bills as he grows his side hustle.

Taylor and his team’s focus for 2019 is to turn Focusmate into a sustainable business. He’s staying on track with this goal, working productively to make it happen without distractions.

Weekly Recap: Busy People Get More Done

Notes from Chris

Episode 589

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

This week started off with a million dollar success story in Ep. 583. It’s about a busy chef who builds a massively successful apron empire in her abundant free time.

Wait, what free time? Well, she didn’t have much. She works in the high-end food industry, and yet she still finds a way to create this apron side hustle that becomes incredibly popular in her industry.

Have you ever heard the expression, “If you want to get something done, ask a busy person to do it”?

Never have I seen this principle be more true than when I started producing this podcast. We feature regular people every day on the show with limited time and resources, and yet, they’re doing something remarkable.

They’re finding a way to invest in themselves and create something that they believe in. That is ultimately what this show is all about!

I talk about the importance of making extra money, which is great, but ultimately, what I’m hoping to do is encourage you to do something that matters to you.

In preparation for a book I’m working on, I was reviewing some notes from an episode that we featured long ago, Ep. 353. In that story, Lisa was not only an active mother, she was also a yoga teacher, an author, and a few other things besides! So when she started her home organization business, she didn’t exactly have an abundance of time.

Yet, just like Ellen, she was still able to turn it into a business that brought in upwards of $4,000/month while also helping refugees.

Listen to today’s Weekly Recap to learn more about Lisa and Ellen’s stories (along with a bonus example from Jake in Ep. 23), why busy people get things done, and how you can use this principle to launch a moneymaking project of your own!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW:

This is a new segment that we’re trying out with the help of side hustlers that we’ve featured on the show in the past. Today, we have an update from Sarah Hannington from Ep. 3.

We featured Sarah in the very first week of Side Hustle School when she was building her customized candy hearts side hustle My Custom Candy.

Listen to the Weekly Recap to hear from Sarah and see what’s happened since she was featured on the show at the beginning of last year!

Weekly Recap: Don’t Become Efficient at Doing the Wrong Things

Notes from Chris

Episode 554

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

Over here in my world, we finished the 8th annual World Domination Summit (see pictures from it here!), and one of the things I shared at WDS in between introducing speakers was about “finding your purpose.”

We live in an age in which productivity and efficiency are highly regarded values, but sometimes you need to slow down. Sometimes you need to stop doing things. And, of course, sometimes you need to do more!

But unless you have a clear sense of purpose, it doesn’t make sense to devote your focus to becoming uber-efficient. It’s much better to be able to say “I’m on the right path. I haven’t got it all figured out, but I know I’m doing the right thing.”

Listen to today’s Weekly Recap to learn more about finding your purpose and getting efficient at doing the right things!

LISTENER Q&A:

This week we had a listener email from Ali and a voicemail from Melanie:

  • Ali: “I am currently reading your book The $100 Startup. I have been looking for a business opportunity for a long time now. After having finished my masters in Polymer Chemistry and having started my PhD, I was even more unsatisfied. I don’t even remember when or where I bought your book. I must have been in London years ago and when I started reading it I was thinking ‘Ah probably just another typical startup book you can find anywhere,’ but it really changed my mind.I already had a website which was supposed to be a blog but I didn’t use it much anymore. So while reading your book I got this idea of providing a lectureship service to young students who are writing their bachelor’s or master’s thesis. My wife published it a couple of times on her Instagram account since she has about 11k follower. So now I got my first job today and will get paid my first 150 Euros for about 4-5 hours of work. My first customers got a pretty high discount, but it’s okay. 150 Euros is good enough to buy ourselves nice sneakers which we wanted to have for a while now. And it’s going to be paid by spare money.

How it has been written but you bring the right ideas across and motivate your reader. My aim is to make 1000 Euros a month as a side income. We won’t save any of that money or do reasonable thinks but rather pay and buy everything we find really cool but couldn’t pay with a PhD scholarship. I mean I already had the WordPress side and my laptop so I literary had an investment of 0 Euros. Thanks, man!”

  • Melanie is in Houston, TX, and she just quit her day job to focus on being a stay at home mom. She has a very specific goal in mind and knows what she wants to do: create a children’s storybook. Unfortunately, this is a new process for her, so she’s not sure what method she should use to get her book published.
  • Listen to the Weekly Recap to hear my thoughts on the matter of writing and publishing your first book! And if you’re interested in checking out the resources I mention, here are some links: Ep. 276, Ep. 538, and The Unconventional Guide to Publishing

Weekly Recap: World Domination Arrives in Portland, Oregon

Notes from Chris

Episode 540

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

In today’s recap, I want to tell you about two productivity tools that I’ve been using recently. One is an app, and the other is more of a resource or methodology.

  • Be Focused App – This app sets a timer that allows you to focus your time on a specific task. I use the pro version which is only $3 in the Apple iOS store and $5 for the desktop version. They also have a free version that you can check out before you take the plunge!
  • The Time Makeover Guide This second resource is more of a concept of tracking your time. Laura has done a lot of research on this, and her philosophy is that even if you’re busy, you have more time than you think. And furthermore, if you pay attention to how you spend your time, you can identify patterns, make adjustments, and spend more time focusing on the things that matter most to you. (Also, here’s a link to Laura’s book, 168 Hours!)

In today’s recap, we’ll delve more into both of these topics—tune in to learn more!

Law Student Helps Create A $6,500/Month Morning Routine Journal

What It’s About

Three friends create a morning routine journal and sell it to the world.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Habits have always played a huge role in Ari’s life—he wakes up early, reads regularly, meditates daily, exercises, and maintains a healthy eating regimen. As such, it totally makes sense that Ari took these good habits and created a side hustle helping others making the most of their mornings.

I cannot stress this enough—start with something that you know. Too many unknown variables can needlessly complicate a side hustle. Start with something familiar until you’re more comfortable with the process!

Fun Fact

Ari and his friends also offer a free PDF of the first week of the Morning Sidekick journal in order to get people signed up for their newsletter, and they created step-by-step action guides for their articles—fillable PDFs people can download after giving them their email address. Then they’d market the journal to the folks on the email list to help achieve consistent sales.

Notes from Chris

Episode 206

Habits have always played a huge role in Ari’s life. He wakes up early, reads regularly, meditates daily, exercises, and maintains a healthy eating regimen. While he was in his second year of law school, a friend approached him and another friend about creating an app to help people develop healthy lifestyle habits, and he was stoked about the idea. The three went to dinner that night to run through ideas, and met a few times over the next month to start fleshing out ideas about an app they wanted to call “Every Damn Day.”

They created a free accountability partner email chain called Partners In Grind, where they’d match people with similar habits up to hold each other accountable. To do this, they created a landing page with a form where people could sign up, select a habit they wanted to work on, and share their geographic location.

They reached out to websites related to self-help and offered to guest blog, and in the articles, he’d mention Partners in Grind. As a result of the marketing and media coverage, they had hundreds of signups within a few hours.

Partners in Grind died out, however, when they learned through user interviews that email wasn’t the right way to connect people. People wanted to be matched with others for accountability but found that email was a difficult way to connect, and it was hard for partners to stay consistent.

Next, they decided to create Morning Sidekick, a journal to help people wake up earlier and build a morning routine, which was the habit that the majority of their users were interested in developing.

They launched a Kickstarter for the journal and promoted it to their email list. They also reached out to various YouTube channels and podcasts related to habits that they’d mentioned in the journal to help them get the word out. They made $20,000 with their Kickstarter campaign and worked on consistent sales for the journal to raise more money to fund the app. So far they’ve sold almost 4,000 units of the Morning Sidekick Journal, which run for $33.99 on their website.

Through sales from the growing website and newsletter, they’re able to consistently make $6,500 in net profit a month on the journal. They’re also working on a Nutrition Sidekick journal while developing an app called Our Habit Nest.
