Tech Employee Gets Paid to Visit Napa Wineries

What It’s About

A wine lover connects the gap between beginners and experts.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

We have looked at the role of personality in a side hustle a few different times. Especially when it comes to mediums like blogging or platforms like Instagram, people want to know about you. It’s true that the world of wine can be overwhelming or intimidating, but there are lots of ways they can learn about it. Kristen’s readers are interested in her perspective and her experiences, not just the knowledge itself.

Fun Fact

Although grapes grown in Napa Valley only represent 4% of the total grapes grown in California, the Napa Valley wine industry yields $50 billion dollars to the US economy. 95% of the wineries located in Napa Valley are family run, and 67% of these wineries produce fewer than 5,000 cases a year.

Notes from Chris

Episode 662
When Kristen Dussel first set her eyes upon Napa Valley’s lush vineyards, it was love at first sight. She couldn’t believe how beautiful it was—not to mention how delicious the wine could be—and dreamed of one day moving there after graduating from university.

And that’s what she did. She earned a degree in marketing and moved from Minnesota to San Francisco to work for a tech company. She loved the job. And she loved being so close to wine country.

She began visiting wineries on the weekends and soaking up all the knowledge she could. She was a fascinated learner, but sometimes it was just downright intimidating. The people she was interacting with at these wineries were seasoned sommeliers. The disconnect between the casual and enthusiast wine lover was clear—sometimes painfully clear.

Kristen wanted to close the gap, not only for herself but for other millennials who weren’t sure how—and just last fall, she realized the way to do it: a wine lifestyle blog.

In December 2017, Kristen launched her site, Wine Country Chick, and published her first blog: a review of Mumm Winery in Napa.

She published several more posts that month, making sure to stay active on social media. It quickly became clear that Instagram would have the most engagement for her brand since the market was so visual, so she focused on that.

She followed big names in the fashion and food world so that she could learn from their style. They posted frequently, favored certain kinds of photography, and published lots of Instagram Stories. So, naturally, she started doing it too. By early 2018, Kristen had amassed a small following of 3,000 people—and it was growing faster and faster.

In March, a local wine brand messaged Kristen and asked about the possibility of a sponsored post on Instagram. She couldn’t believe it. Someone already wanted to pay her for exposure! She quickly and excitedly agreed, celebrated with a glass of wine, and a couple weeks later, she had made $175 for something she would have done for free.

This opened up a whole new world for Kristen. The blog was just a creative project at first. But from now on, she wouldn’t just get to write about great wineries, she might actually get paid to do so.

Brands kept reaching out, and for the most part, partnerships went off without a hitch. Winecountrychick.com had its first $500 in June, and then in July the brand broke $1,000 and acquired her 10,000th follower.

These days, Wine Country Chick generates anywhere from $500 to $2,000 per month, depending on her full-time job commitments. Kristen’s 16,000 Instagram followers are highly engaged, and she reciprocates with constant engagement back. She’s thrilled that she’s built a profitable hustle in less than a year starting from scratch, and she loves that she’s helping others explore their passion along the way. Kristen is living the Napa dream.

IT Manager Stitches Seamless Sewing Side Hustle

What It’s About

A mother of two reconnects with her creative side while stitching a sewing side hustle into her busy life.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

As far as long-term goals go, Roula stresses the importance of setting realistic goals for yourself. Think about concrete steps you want to have taken within the next three months, and then the next six. Remember that even slow progress, like working just 30 minutes a day is still progress. And be patient. The business will not boom overnight, so don’t get discouraged. Just keep plugging away, even when there’s sew much to do.

Fun Fact

The ancient Egyptians were probably the first civilization to develop special tools to make rope. Egyptian rope dates back to 4000 to 3500 B.C. and was generally made of water reed fibers. Other rope in antiquity was made from the fibers of date palms, flax, grass, papyrus, leather, or animal hair. The use of such ropes pulled by thousands of workers allowed the Egyptians to move the heavy stones required to build their monuments.

Notes from Chris

Episode 656

Roula Rallis is no stranger to entrepreneurship. She was surrounded by it all through her youth. Day after day, she watched her parents run back and forth from the restaurant they owned. It was a little Italian place called the Kittery House of Pizza. Her father worked 80 hours a week at the restaurant. Oh, and he only took off two days a year—Christmas and Greek Easter.

Soon, Roula wasn’t just watching her parents work, she was working, too. At 12 years old she started biking a paper route. In her spare time, she and her sister folded pizza boxes for their dad, where he paid them 10 cents a box. Once she turned 14, Roula got a job at a trendy clothing store in her hometown. There, she could buy the clothes that her parents couldn’t afford to get her themselves.

Roula didn’t dream of becoming an entrepreneur like her parents. It was either feast or famine in her home—some seasons bringing in far more money than others. She didn’t like the feeling of uncertainty.

Instead, she put herself through college. While she got a degree in business, she was still adamant about not delving into any kind of entrepreneurial work. Instead, she jumped into the corporate world.

As she moved through adulthood, Roula was grateful for her stable income—especially once she had a family of her own.

Yet, as time went on, Roula couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something missing in her life. Even though she liked the stability, she had gotten lost in that corporate world … you could say she was hanging on by a thread.

Her thoughts turned to an idea she’d once had. Years earlier, she had taken classes on design and pattern making and began to make clothes. She briefly made an Etsy shop before abandoning it. She put her love for DIY projects on hold when she became pregnant with her first child.

Now, seven years later, it was time to dust off her old sewing machine.

This time, Roula decided that she wanted to try experimenting with rope. She made a basket for her home. Once she finished the first one, she knew she had to do more. It was like she had found a creativity needle in the haystack of life!

Of course, she didn’t need dozens of baskets in her home. So she reopened that long-abandoned Etsy shop, which was called the Sewcialite. Before long, it was back up and running and filled with all kinds of new products. Roula made everything from coasters to hanging baskets to tote bags—all out of rope.

Roula started this back in March of 2017. A year and a half later, she is bringing in up to $1,500 a month.

She knows that there are plenty of ways that she could expand her business, like going to craft shows or doing more wholesale, but right now she’s happy with where it is. Her Sewciliate sewing shop is running seamlessly.

Crossfit Trainer Starts Meal Prep Service for Hungry Customers

What It’s About

When excuses are abundant, this local meal prep delivery service finds a way to trim the fat!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

There’s a lot of learning through doing. When we asked Loren if he’d do anything differently, he mentioned that he’d do everything differently. But you never know what to do until you’ve been through it and learned on your own what works and what doesn’t.

Fun Fact

Loren says that one of the most challenging parts of building Fit Kitchen Direct was learning how to not be afraid of saying no to somebody. This has allowed them to stay focused and not be distracted by every opportunity that came along. They stick to their niche exclusively (not doing catering or family-style meals for example) and it has allowed them to grow vertically.

Notes from Chris

Episode 653

Megan Benedict had heard all the excuses. A personal trainer at a CrossFit gym in Portland, Oregon, Megan knew that nutrition was critical for her clients’ health and well-being. No matter how many pull-ups you do, without the right food, you can only go so far.

But it was also true that her clients were quite literally fed up with the strains of maintaining a healthy lifestyle on top of their already full schedules. So instead of shrugging off their concerns, Megan tried a different approach—she listened and took note of them.

Her clients weren’t the only ones with challenges. Although she had a full-time job that she loved, Megan felt the need to create something more flexible and forgiving. Because while she was kicking butt in her training sessions, the long hours were kicking hers. As her boyfriend and partner in crime, Loren Castillo, can confirm—the hours of a CrossFit trainer were brutal. There were plenty of days where she’d be out the door with nothing more than a protein bar at 5am, returning when it was dark and time for bed.

It was a true labor of love, but even Megan had to admit that the lifestyle of a personal trainer was rough.

It also didn’t help that she suffered from chronic migraines that would occasionally force her to cancel or reschedule on clients.

Their shared goal was to reach a point where they’re able to support themselves and start a family, and this lifestyle wasn’t conducive to any of that. So, when Megan took note of the healthy eating challenges of her clients, she didn’t see them as excuses. She saw them as an opportunity. An opportunity to fill a very obvious need.

Megan wrote down all of those excuses on a piece of paper, and one night, she and Loren put their heads together to try to come up with a solution to each:

“Health food is boring and bland” was an easy one—Megan had a black belt in meal prepping, and let her taste buds lead the way when it came to putting together delicious meals that were also healthy. Check!

“I’m too tired to cook after a long day at work” took a bit more consideration—this was the beginning of 2016, and the market was saturated with meal prep companies. Some were healthy, some not quite so much, but for the most part, all of them required some effort despite the convenience of having all of the ingredients delivered to your door. That’s when an idea really started cooking. What if they could find a way to do the cooking for them? They were already meal prepping for themselves, why not take what they had learned and turn it into a legitimate business?

“Vegetables and fruit end up going bad before I can even use them” led them to the decision to make weekly deliveries to each customer with meals that would stand the test of time, so to speak. And they’d set everything up like a subscription model which would ensure repeat business for them.

Although it may have had some humble beginnings, this piece of paper ultimately became the business plan for a meal prep company that they ended up calling Fit Kitchen Direct.

By the end of their 8th month, they had roughly 50-60 subscribers that they could count on every week. They offered a seasonal menu, with four different dishes every single week. They began with a plan for Omnivores, but added a Vegan option after getting a lot of requests. Then, they got a license for Whole30 and began offering that option as well.

They now have 200 weekly subscribers and some one-off sales. These 200 subs are all paying hundreds of dollars a month for deliveries, which means that each month’s revenue is currently in the $80,000 range, with a profit margin of between 30-40%.

It’s not just a business, it’s a recipe for a whole new life!

UK Sales Manager Calls Shots With Photographic Film Shop

What It’s About

A snapshot of an online photographic film shop—it’s a family affair!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

This is clearly a subculture, and if you’re going to market to a subculture you have to really understand it. Customers have the potential to be loyal and order frequently, but only if they trust you.

Fun Fact

The first partially successful photograph was made in approximately 1816. The photograph was not permanent, and eventually became completely darkened by the overall exposure to light.

Notes from Chris

Episode 647

Did you think it was no longer possible to buy film to take pictures? Or that it was not possible to have that film developed into print pictures? If so, think again! Analogue Wonderland is an online store specializing in photographic film. It stocks over 180 different types of newly produced camera film, and a few related accessories like cases and retrievers—items which are small and fit well in the same shipping package.

The store’s founder, Paul, has been a film photographer for almost a decade. Because of his first-hand knowledge of using film for photography, he is very familiar with the market. He knows the needs of photographers, and this real life experience also made him aware of the gaps with the retailers and brands currently serving the market.

For many years, it was just a minor annoyance to Paul that there was no ‘one-stop shop’ to buy items he needed for his much-loved hobby. However, minor annoyance turned into a huge time waster when he was trying to stock up on products before going away for three months.

He spent hours trawling through numerous websites to find all the items he needed. This was the moment he had the realization that he couldn’t be the only film photographer struggling with this. Surely others would also benefit from having that one-stop shop where they could find all their film necessities.

And Paul had learned that frustration is often a sign of a business opportunity.

To start, he asked fellow film photographers lots of questions regarding how they went about buying film. What he found out was that others were just as frustrated as he was. Everyone had stories of having to look endlessly for their favorite brands. Or having to pay import costs from other countries. Or the need to keep spot-checking eBay and hoping they could get what they needed. That’s when he realized there was a serious gap in the market.

Analogue Wonderland went live on May 18, 2018. For the month prior to opening, they ran a launch campaign with a manufacturer-sponsored giveaway. People entered the giveaway by signing up with their email. This really drove interest and raised awareness.

When they launched at 8 am they sent out an email announcement. They had $2,500 in sales in the first 30 minutes! There was no time to do anything other than fulfilling orders and replying to email and social media messages. That evening Paul and his mom went to the pub to celebrate but says they both fell asleep after one drink. The side hustle way can be intoxicating.

Four months after opening, they hit £10,000 in sales ($16,000). Paul says neither he nor his mother needs the money right now, so they are reinvesting their profit into marketing to grow the business. That way, if in the future, either one of them needs the cash or more freedom, the business is bigger and healthier.

For Paul, the best part of the experience has been ownership of the business. Every decision is yours alone. He likens it to playing a video game—but this is one that pays YOU to play it. He says you try things, like Shopify and MailChimp, and suddenly you’re connected with people from all over the world who see what you’ve built—it is “addictive and highly enjoyable.”

You could say he’s calling the shots in a market that was unexposed. But we’ll see what develops next.

  • Analogue Wonderland: If you have a love of old school photography, head on over to Paul’s website to check out his offerings!
  • Shopify: Paul used Shopify to setup the website for Analogue Wonderland, and they’re offering a 21-day trial and exclusive discount for all Side Hustle School listeners!
  • Go-To skin care & These Are Things: Two more e-commerce websites that (like Paul) focus on selling products while still providing a great experience

Salesman’s Spicy Side Hustle Serves Up Serious Sales

What It’s About

A tasty side hustle that serves up the heat!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

But, if you were to approach larger chains, Charlie says patience is key. Some retailers can take five to six months to approve your product, even for small batches. Be sure to keep in touch throughout the process and don’t let yourself be forgotten. Even a quick phone call can be enough to ensure the process is chugging along.

Fun Fact

Since Charlie didn’t have any retailers starting out, he offered to deliver his hot sauce to anyone that ordered it online locally. A few weeks in, he mailed a bottle of his sauce to a local news anchor who is known for wearing bowties on every Tuesday’s broadcast. In his letter to him, Charlie wrote, “Hey John, I launched Hot Charlie’s a few weeks ago, and it’s the first bowtie friendly hot sauce” (For note here: Charlie’s label is a cartoon version of himself with a bowtie on) Well, his producer emailed him back, and he landed a spot on the local news!

Notes from Chris

Episode 626

St. Louis, Missouri Salesman Charlie Backer was getting ready to host friends for his Super Bowl party. Like any good host, he had a wide array of snacks and nibbles for his guests but wanted to add something special and unique to the table. So, while the 49’ers and Ravens were warming up on the field, Charlie began to heat things up in the kitchen.

He put together a simple recipe for a hot sauce using fresh ingredients, like peppers, vinegar, and garlic that he’d picked up at the supermarket. After a few tries, he felt he’d landed on a recipe which had more kick than the punter for the Ravens that night, but didn’t lose out on flavor.

Charlie served it up to his friends … and they loved it! It was early days, but he could feel people were really warming to his hot new recipe.

Over the course of the next few years, Charlie worked hard on his hot sauce. He’d tinker with the ingredients and flavors and cooking times to try and get it just right. Then, he’d share bottles of it with friends and family. He even gave it a name, Hot Charlie’s and had a sticker created to put on the bottle.

Then, in 2017, Charlie felt like he’d finally cracked the hot sauce code.

One of his friends took a bottle home to try and, the next morning, that friend was on the phone imploring Charlie to start selling the hot sauce. They weren’t just complementary, they downright told him he’d be crazy not to sell it.

Charlie was a salesman at heart but he’d never thought of pitching his sauce to anyone. It was just something he did. But, he also wasn’t going to miss an opportunity to earn a little extra cash if he could, especially if people were asking to buy it. So, he thought, give the people what they want!

Retailers have been a large source of Hot Charlie’s profits and the sauce is now sold in over 70 retailers across three states. Which has led to the sales of thousands of bottles.

Looking to the future, Charlie is going all-in on his hot sauce side hustle. He lost his job and decided it was his opportunity to focus on Hot Charlie’s full time. He’s fired up: the goal is to expand into more retailers and take Hot Charlie’s nationwide!

Insult This! Witty Event Organizer Prepares You to Respond to Rudeness

What It’s About

A side hustle that equips victims with quips!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Why is it different from other web-based projects? Mostly because it’s so entrenched and has been around for so long with such good organic search results. It would be hard for somebody to come along and say “I’m going to have a better insult-response site.”

Fun Fact

Bryn’s “Ask Bryn” forum actually caused a young woman to contact the administration from her school and completely turned the bullying situation around for her.

Notes from Chris

Episode 608

Back in 2012, Bryn Connor of Vancouver, B.C. had a mortifying encounter, but instead of letting it get the best of her, she aimed to find a way to fight back. Bryn decided to take a trip to the local Planetarium with her two children in tow and had chosen not to wear her wedding ring. Unbeknownst to her, this would turn into a HUGE issue for a man at the event. He decided that it was his responsibility to attack Bryn for this. He went on and on in front of 20 other families about how her husband had left her… just because she didn’t have her ring on and had two children with her.

Bryn was stunned. She couldn’t believe what had happened to her, and in such a random way!

All night the scene played over and over in her mind. Not only was she embarrassed by what the man said to her, she was also upset that she didn’t put him in his place. He had no right to talk to her, or anyone else, like that, but he didn’t have any consequences for it.

The next two months flew by, but Bryn couldn’t get what happened to her at the Planetarium out of her mind. However, instead of feeling embarrassed, she channeled her frustrations into a new side hustle called “I Should Have Said”—a library resource for people being verbally bullied full of snappy comebacks for all occasions. She knew that so many others experienced the same kind of situations she did. There were even memes about “that moment when you think of the perfect insult two hours too late.” Whomp whomp… She wanted to help get people ready.

To start, Bryn created blog posts for every kind of insult she could think of on her WordPress site. There were comebacks for people of all ages, sexualities, genders, and races. Topics ranged from what to say when someone calls you ugly, to what do when someone is being racist, to how to respond when people point out your grey hair. No matter the situation, Bryn wanted her audience to be able to come back with a snappy retort. She called it I Should Have Said.

Then, Bryn had a new idea. Not only would she suggest a series of comebacks for each scenario, she would also create animations to accompany the blog post. Well… she was planning to… until her child spilled water all over her computer. Her temporary computer didn’t have the capabilities for animation, so she tried creating polls instead.

Now I know what you’re thinking… this IS a Side Hustle School story, so where does the money come into the picture? Having and building a following is one thing, but actually getting paid for it is another. Well, after the first four months of growing her online community, Bryn decided to invest in Google Adsense ads. At this time she was making about $20 a month from her hustle, solely from those ads.

Over time her following began to increase. Of course, she continued writing and sharing her posts, but Bryn credits most of her success to her devotion to learning about SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. This is the study of how to make your website appear at the top of the search page, rather than be lost in the far corners of the internet. The better Bryn got at this, the more people would visit the site, and the more money she’d make off of ads!

Combined with her advanced knowledge of SEO, her research in optimizing ads, and her new products, her profits skyrocketed. She is now making anywhere between $3,000 and $8,000 a month.

Bryn can’t quit her day job just yet, but making thousands of dollars a month from her snappy comeback website is nothing to laugh at.

Miniature Dollhouse Website Pays Full-Size Profits

What It’s About

A side hustle that proves that great ideas can come in small packages.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Amanda said something especially wise when I was talking with her. She said, “People will say it’s a risk to start your own business, but so is wasting opportunities and your potential. Time is our most precious resource—don’t let your whole life pass you by without going for what you most want.”

Fun Fact

The earliest known miniature homes were found in Egyptian tombs from nearly 5,000 years ago. It’s believed these wooden models were made for religious purposes.

Notes from Chris

Episode 607

When Amanda Austin was a child, her late grandmother presented her with her very own dollhouse. Her crafty grandmother had assembled, painted, and wallpapered the miniature house personally. She even crocheted miniature rugs for each room in the house! It didn’t take long for Amanda to become preoccupied with the dollhouse. She spent every free moment playing with the house and the miniature family that lived there. Whenever she got allowance or birthday money, she would spend it at the local miniatures store.

Now, as an adult working full-time as a digital marketing manager, those memories have come full circle. Amanda sells wooden dollhouse kits and dollhouse miniatures on her own branded e-commerce site. She runs this site as a drop shipping business, which means she doesn’t have to buy and store any of her items. When someone places an order on her site, she notifies her wholesaler and they fulfill the order. There are over 3,000 items for sale on Amanda’s site Shop of Miniatures, and she takes care of the marketing, customer service, and website maintenance.

These days, there aren’t many brick and mortar dollhouse stores open. Since she still has that self-professed “soft spot” for miniatures, when she was thinking about starting a side hustle, she decided to dig deeper into the online world of miniature dollhouse sales. In her words, “They were all terrible… They were poorly designed, poorly organized, and not mobile optimized. I knew I could do better.”

How did she do better? Well, first—being a digital marketing manager, she knew using keywords was critical.

Keywords are words and phrases in web content that enable people to find a site via search engines. Sometimes a business can have a great website, but if keywords aren’t included in the site’s content, it won’t be found when a potential customer conducts a search on Google. Coming up on a Google search isn’t even good enough. According to one study, the first page of a Google search gets 95% of the web traffic.

Best of all are long tail keywords—which are, as the name implies, keywords longer than regular ones. They are also more specific. This means you have less competition with other sites when using long tail keywords on your site. Often someone who is searching the internet is looking for a specific item or subject. They will likely be using more descriptive terms in their search. If a website is sprinkled with long tail keywords that match such a search, the shopper is more likely to find that site. They are also more likely to stay engaged on that site, or even make a purchase.

Amanda’s goal was to rank on the first page of a Google search for dollhouse related items. She used metrics to conduct keyword research. She started out looking for keywords that had 3,000-5,000 hits a month that also weren’t overly competitive. She used the site longtailpro.com, where she found three keywords that had good search volume and low competition from other sites.

Her discovery that dollhouses and miniatures were in demand but weren’t that competitive of a niche was the deciding factor to enter this market.

Unlike some of the stories we’ve featured recently that have used Facebook ads or other paid strategies, Amanda has had much success in growing her business organically. However, this was no miniature feat. She did a lot of keyword research. She spent many months working to get on that first page of a Google search. She says blogging helped immensely and was very strategic about keyword placement on her website.

She started her business in November 2017 and is now making about $800 profit per month—which is just enough to cover her soon-to-be-born daughter’s daycare costs. Amanda now only works on her business about one hour a week.

Amanda’s goal is to continue to work on her site’s SEO so she can rank even higher than her current spot as the third top keyword search on Google. She would also like to hit the $30,000/year revenue mark—which she is hoping she will achieve with upcoming holiday sales.

No doubt about it, this savvy doll-house lover has set herself up for BIG success in a miniature world of e-commerce!

Hungover Accountant Starts “Morning After” Party Cleanup Service

What It’s About

A cleaning service that takes the headache out of the hangover.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Find a niche market and develop a business strategy that is new and will be remembered. Make sure you have developed an easy to use website and can capture your audience’s attention straight away with a clear message of what you do, who you are and why. Finding the right staff is also key as they are the face of your business. This is one of the reasons we haven’t grown as fast as we could have. Finally, make sure you commit 100%.

Fun Fact

The cleaning industry is worth around $4 billion annually to the Australian economy. That huge amount of money means there are over 62,000 people employed as contract cleaners. With so much money and job opportunities out there it’s no wonder that there are literally thousands of cleaning companies across the nation. By picking a niche market James was able to stand out from the crowd and carve out a nice little side business for himself.

Notes from Chris

Episode 605

Drinking too much on a night out certainly has its consequences. You’ll likely wake up the next morning with a ton of regret and a wicked hangover to match. All most people want to do in that situation is lie in bed and wait for the storm to pass.

However, today’s side hustler thinks a little differently. Meet James Hookway, a full-time chartered accountant from Perth in Western Australia. For James, it was while hungover after a Christmas party in 2014 that he came up with a unique business idea.

He and his wife had thrown the party and the next morning, they lay in bed, dreading the inevitable after party cleanup. While procrastinating about when to start the job, they began talking about how great it would be if there was a service that would clean up after you big party and maybe even bring you breakfast in bed.

After having a good laugh about it, they dragged themselves out of bed, had a big breakfast, and got to removing all traces of the night before. But the idea stuck with James and, like a fine wine, it actually got better with age.

Fast forward to July, six months later, and the concept still excited him. He decided to do some research and realized that, although there were a lot of cleaning companies out there, none of them were marketed specifically at the after party/hangover crowd—which can be a large market in Australia. They were all fairly generic, boring companies with terrible branding.

Figuring there might be something there, James decided to test the concept. To keep things simple he created a Facebook page describing the proposed service and shared it with his friends and family. The name for the page almost wrote itself. He called it Hangover Helpers!

Perhaps it was the perfect name, the concept itself, or maybe the right person just so happened to share the page. Whatever the cause, what followed was one of the craziest weeks of James’ life!

He was contacted for interviews on TV shows, radio stations and by journalists from major publications all over the country. They loved the novel concept and wanted to talk to the creator of such a unique idea. He had achieved national exposure in less than two weeks. That’s something most larger companies are never able to do despite expensive and time-consuming campaigns.

With all that free marketing, it was inevitable their first customers would come on faster than a headache after too many gin and tonics. And that’s exactly what happened.

Their first booking came that very week. James had no cleaning equipment, so he had to buy some to get started. He picked up basic cleaning products and a Ghostbuster-style vacuum cleaner as well as some food supplies for the breakfast.

It was a hell of a party to start the business on! The house was a total mess, but that didn’t phase James too much. It meant he was able to get some great before and after photos to showcase the type of work he was capable of. After the cleaning was done and the party hosts had enjoyed their breakfast burritos, James knew this could be a viable side business.

Just under a year after their successful launch of the Facebook group. Over the next 12 months, the revenue from the side hustle doubled and hit $30,000. Not bad at all for a weekend cleaning gig outside of a full-time job!

Frenchman Says Bonjour to $35,000/Month Foodie Hustle

What It’s About

A Frenchman brings quality food products from Quebec to the rest of Canada.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Unlike a lot of other online businesses we’ve featured, this kind of project comes with risk and will take time to succeed. Costs are high and whenever you’re purchasing a food product to resell, you have to deal with all those complications of shipping and storage and the need for it to go from your warehouse (or basement…) to the customer in a fixed period of time before it expires.

Fun Fact

Cedric has been watching The Walking Dead, and starting this business has had another surprising benefit for him: in the event of a zombie apocalypse, he knows exactly where he’s headed—his warehouse full of French food. So, while the world is burning all around us, Cedric plans on living it up and snacking on foie gras and jam. We asked him for the address, but he’s not looking for any competition.

Notes from Chris

Episode 601

In a lot of ways, Cedric Fontaine is your typical Frenchman. He’s usually found with foie gras, cheese, bread, and butter on his plate, and he’s never far from a glass of red wine. And Cedric brought his love of gastronomy with him when he emigrated from France to Canada about 15 years ago to work as an eCommerce consultant. But upon his arrival, a friend informed him that he wouldn’t be able to find his favorite French flavors in Quebec. He almost got on the next flight back to France.

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Cedric was determined to scour Quebec looking for a flavor from every region of the province. He began a directory of artisanal food producers and used that as a basis to begin his new venture, Terriors Quebec.

Terroir was the perfect side hustle starting point because the word refers to the unique environmental context that helps give food its distinct flavor. Cheeses from different regions, produced in different seasons, can have characteristics that inform the taste and flavor profile. The same can be said for coffee, wine, chocolate, and even tomatoes.

Cedric began Terroirs Quebec in 2005 with about 10 products and has since grown to about 400 different items. For the first five years, he kept the inventory in his basement, managing 1 order a month in the early days, scaling to 30 in the first years.

For just a couple thousand dollars, Cedric was able to purchase a full inventory of his first ten products so that he had 12 of each—enough to launch his website. How did he choose those ten items? Well, he had a very specific idea of what his customer base was looking for because he was his own ideal customer.

He was, and is, the kind of person who puts a lot of thought and care into the food they choose. They want to know where it comes from, they want it to be organic, and they are looking for labels without a huge list of ingredients. Less filler, more substance!

While the profit margins might be lower than other side hustle avenues, Cedric can still use a lot of the revenue to invest in more products, advertising, and growth. But he also wants to make some money for himself, too, so he earns about 10% of his side hustle’s monthly revenue as his extra income. That means he takes home about $1,000 during a slow season that sees about $15,000 a month in sales, and upwards of $3,000 a month during the holiday months, which typically bring in about $35,000.

What’s next in the world of fine food and maple butter? Cedric is looking for ways to tweak his shipping methods in order to increase his profit margins. Shipping heavy food products is always going to be a somewhat expensive venture, but he knows that there’s a better solution out there for him.

He’s also working on a new website and expanding his product offerings to foods found all over the world—not just in Quebec. We’ll wish him Bonne chance since terroir and side hustle seem to go together as well as fresh cheese and warm baguette.

Health Scare Pushes Marketer To Start Profitable Blog

What It’s About

A diagnosis sprouts a vegetarian blog journey!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

She believes every post she creates on I Heart Vegetables should solve a problem and serve her audience. This means every post needs to be something which a would-be healthy vegetarian is going to search for in Google. If it’s not valuable to someone who finds her page, it doesn’t make the cut.

Fun Fact

Contrary to popular belief, there are many supermarket products that are vegetarian and even vegan! These include even processed snack foods like Oreos (they don’t contain real dairy!) and dark chocolate. A good tip when shopping: Products that are listed as “cholesterol-free” are often vegan, as bad cholesterol only comes from animal products.

Notes from Chris

Episode 595

When Liz Thomson found out she had high cholesterol, she resolved to make a change. It was time for a healthy new lifestyle with diet and exercise at the heart of it all. Liz opted to try a vegan diet for the next six months in the hopes it would give her more energy, better health, and bring that cholesterol number right down. Although it would be hard, Liz was determined she wouldn’t just endure this new diet but thrive on it.

Two months into her journey, Liz felt the itch to write about what she was doing. Being a marketer in her day job, she thought a blog would be a cool place to share what she was learning and experiencing. So, she headed over to WordPress and started a free website called LizLivingVegan.

Over the next four months, Liz shared everything she could on her new blog. Anything that was new, exciting or interesting she added, usually publishing a few times a week.

Liz got her cholesterol tested at the end of her six-month experiment, but it wasn’t good news. Her number hadn’t budged, and the doctor decided the only treatment for this was medical, and couldn’t be changed by diet and exercise. Bummer.

Although Liz walked away from it all a little sad and quickly returned to a less-restrictive vegetarian diet, she didn’t feel it was all for nothing. Along the way she’d found a passion for blogging, sharing recipes and creating a community around the cause. She’d got a taste for it, and she wanted more.

The led Liz to start a new blog, I Heart Vegetables, where she was going to blog about her new (but old) life as a vegetarian. She was still committed to healthy living and wanted to share it with anyone who was interested.

Since starting, she’s been able to generate a healthy profit from the I Heart Vegetables blog. It’s also helped her to land a book deal with Rockridge Press and publish The Truly Healthy Vegetarian Cookbook.

Looking to the future, Liz wants to continue to grow the business and optimize her site further, to ensure she can help as many people live a happy and healthy vegetarian lifestyle. But for now, she’s enjoying getting her life back on track after the intense process of writing her book!
