Marathon Runner Earns Full-Time Income Trying On Shoes

What It’s About

A product review site that goes the distance right out of the gate!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you want to build a successful affiliate review site, try to build something that is truly going to be helpful to your readers. That’s the secret!

Following the latest trend or shortcut might get you somewhere in the short-term—but it’s only if your readers like you, share your content, and come back to you that your business will endure. The key to being a successful affiliate is to realize that you are there to serve the customer, not the retailer.

Fun Fact

In 2016, there were 64 million people who the USA who went running or jogging. In that same year, Ruggero quit his job to work full time on Running Shoes Guru and the site received 500,000 unique visitors per month from all over the world. That means 6 million people visited his site that year, equivalent to 10% of the running population in the USA.

Notes from Chris

Episode 625

Ruggero Loda has been an avid runner his entire adult life. Few things give him more pleasure than lacing up a pair of shoes and hitting the road. It never occurred to him that he could use that passion to earn an income. That is until he lost his job as head of merchandising for a major shoe brand.

Ruggero’s side hustle story is like running a marathon. It spans over the course of ten years with a lot of hard work along the way. But before we get to what his side hustle is, let’s jog back to that day in 2009 when he lost his job.

He viewed the sudden time off like a rest day in marathon training. A rest day is when runners relax and rebuild energy for more training in the week ahead. In this case, he’d regroup for a couple of months and then start looking for work. Like any good runner though, he couldn’t just do nothing so he used the time to read a few books. He was able to distill several lessons that would lead to him creating a side business of his own.

That side business turned out to be a running shoes review website. He started the site because he was shocked to find that no such websites existed, at least no good ones. Some running publications were doing short reviews but there was no one doing in-depth research. With that, his side hustle Running Shoes Guru was off and racing.

The first version of the site was nothing special. It launched with a few running tips and reviews of 8 running shoes Ruggero was familiar with. But that was fine, he didn’t have any grand plans for the site in the beginning. He figured it would be a fun project to work on and that he may be able to show prospective employers for his next job.

However, he’d heard he could put affiliate links on the website linking out to products he reviewed. If anyone purchased a pair of shoes after visiting his site, he’d make a commission. So he added the links.

The next Sunday afternoon he made his first commission, $9! Not a record-breaking sum but still something to get excited about. His first online income! He earned a few more dollars over the next month but it wasn’t enough to live off.

A year later, in 2010, the site was receiving 30,000 visitors per month and income had also grown. Ruggero began buying new pairs of shoes so that he could review them and create more high-quality review content. In 2011, he started to build a small group of remote testers to help trial and review the shoes. The strategy was working, and by the end of 2011, the site had grown to 80,000 visitors per month and it turned out he has just hitting his stride.

He continued that same strategy for two more years and by 2013 the site was picking up the pace Traffic had grown to 300,000 visitors per month and his mind began to spin like a treadmill. He thought that Running Shoes Guru had the potential to become his full-time job. However, he wanted to make sure that if things didn’t work out he would have a soft landing. In other words, he wanted a good plan B. If Running Shoes Guru failed, he wanted to be certain he had a career to fall back on.

The site is regularly reaching one million visitors per month and is generating six figures in profit every year. Ruggero and his team of testers test over 100 pairs of running shoes annually and views this as his competitive advantage over the other review sites, where many don’t even try the product they’re reviewing.

Over the coming year, Ruggero plans to double down on his effort and hire a few more employees so that he can delegate more. That will give him more time for running, and not just running the business.

Ruggero’s story proves that a good side hustle can be a marathon, not a sprint. With consistent, deliberate work you can push through the wall and cross the finish line. As a reward, you’ll get paid in more than just Gatorade and bananas!

Quote of the Day
"I would recommend always having a ‘Plan B.’ When I left my job, I made sure I was in a position where if I was to leave my business in four, five, or ten years, I would have enough work experience and results to fall back to a job that was appropriate. This way if I HAVE to go back to a job, I can go back to a nice job."

Outsource Date Night With This Sexy Side Hustle

What It’s About

Two women take the guesswork out of love.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

In a partnership, it’s important to have clearly defined responsibilities and tasks to ensure that your commitment to the business and to one another is met. I liked the idea of the “weekly accountability task sheets so that they each know what tasks they need to accomplish for their side hustle.”

Fun Fact

It takes less than four minutes to decide whether you have romantic feelings for someone, and that decision is based mostly on body language. Your next first date impression boils down to a 55% emphasis on body language, 38% on tone of voice, and only 7% on what the person is actually saying. Goes to show that actions speak louder than words!

Notes from Chris

Episode 623

There are friends, and then there are friends who will go the extra mile for you. Trineca McCleod, a social worker from Florida, wanted to go the extra mile for her best friend, Ta’Veca Collins. The two friends have known each other for decades. But it wasn’t until Ta’Veca’s wedding night that they accidentally stumbled upon the idea to turn their love of love into a side hustle success.

To do something special for the matrimonial couple, Trineca and other bridesmaids snuck off and decorated their honeymoon suite with candles and rose petals artfully scattered throughout the room. A ‘Honeymoon Survival Kit’ and other “love items” were placed throughout the suite. It was romantic, tasteful, and, surprisingly, the beginning of a business.

After Ta’Veca’s magical honeymoon night, the two best friends began to plan and execute numerous romantic rendezvous for their significant others, family, and friends. They called it Romance On The Go, and they spent a few weeks testing their date nights with people they knew would give them honest feedback … before launching just in time for Valentine’s Day. That way, they knew they’d have at least a few paying customers.

But they had more than a few. Within the first month, they had dozens of people wanting romantic date nights for their loved one. According to Trineca, they “were shocked that so many people were interested in purchasing our romance packages. We couldn’t believe that an idea we had on a honeymoon night could’ve sparked this.”

Trineca and Ta’Veca are bringing in anywhere from $1,000-$5,000/month depending on the time of year. Their busiest seasons are around Valentine’s Day (naturally—this year, they brought in $2,000 that week), the wedding season, and other holidays like Christmas and New Year’s.

Romance On The Go is dependent on one of the main tenets of any successful relationship… good communication. The two friends credit their business, and friendship, to staying organized and always being in communication about meetings, vendors, and planning. Ta’Veca said that they conduct the majority of their business after their children have gone to bed and maintain constant communication through phone calls and texts during the week.

They also use weekly accountability task sheets so that they each know what tasks they need to accomplish. Beyond that, they admit that they couldn’t keep their side hustle going without a healthy dose of patience. They knew that they were ready to deal with other people’s visions and personalities and guide the clients who say “do whatever.”

Romance planning is now available … at least if you live in South Florida. It’s a little love, a little hustle, and a unique idea to bring busy couples closer.

When the Rubber Hits the Road, This Mom of Three Earns $5,000/Month

What It’s About

A side hustle that really gets our stamp of approval!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

As a result of her product tweak, when we asked her about advice she had for other side hustlers, Nicole stressed the importance of considering all of your products “works in progress.” She thinks that it really does pay to keep an eye on trends because at the very least some of that rush of heavy search traffic is bound to trickle your way. And it could completely reinvent not only your product but your brand as well, leading to a massive increase in sales.

Fun Fact

Nicole decided on the name Yellow Bess after a brainstorming session with her husband. She wanted a name that would be easy to remember but still catches people a little off guard. Having a design degree and knowing colors have an effect on a person’s mood, she thought leading with a color would be a good start. She settled on yellow because it grabs your attention, is cheerful and represents sunshine.

Notes from Chris

Episode 622

Austin-based Nicole Smith is a stay-at-home mother of three kids (6, 4, and 1 years old). Although she has a Bachelors of Science in Interior Design, she confesses that some days she feels like a professional peanut butter and jelly chef and steward of snacks and juice boxes. [Side note: that would be awesome.]

Following the birth of her first child, Nicole took a bit of a detour, leaving her job at a high-end residential interior design firm. At the time, it was a dream come true to be there for the most transformative period of her daughter’s life. But as with many other stay at home parents, before her have discovered, the novelty of it all just didn’t have the same kind of staying power as the crayon art on the walls. At a certain point, she realized … she was bored!

Since it was “Baby Central” 24/7 in her home, it made sense for her to launch a side hustle drawing on her day to day as inspiration. Her online shop, Yellow Bess, began as a creative outlet making baby clothing, before transitioning to making custom rubber stamps.

It was different from the kind of work she’d been doing, but Nicole soon discovered that she really enjoyed it.

Her rubber stamps were practical, elegant and designed with a custom image that was laser engraved. The only trouble was that there were already a large number of people out there making customizable rubber stamps like her. She was selling some, but to sell more, she needed something that would help her stand out.

That feature ended up being surprisingly simple.

Although “yellow” was in her name, she had always loved robin’s egg blue, so she decided to hand paint all of her wooden stamp handles that color. Prior to this, Nicole had tried a multitude of things to help her get the edge on other sellers and figure out what tactics and products would work best, but nothing worked quite so well as this seemingly small change. Nicole was shocked by how successful her side hustle had become almost overnight, and robin’s egg blue has now become her signature.

So far, in 2018, she’s generated around $20,000 of new business—completely unrelated to rubber stamps—and bringing in roughly $5,000/month from Yellow Bess.

Nicole is also quick to point out how her side hustle impacts her kids. She loves the idea that they’ll be growing up in an environment where they see her being creative, working hard and making things along the way.

So, what’s next? She’s excited about the release of new product lines to her core of rubber stamps. She’s planning on introducing a subscription box on Cratejoy, Drinkware and Home Goods this fall. They’re all bets intended to grow the value of her existing customers. She’d also like to introduce her expanding product line to people who may not have a need for rubber stamps.

This side hustle gets our stamp of approval!

Sign Language Videos Spell Out Profits for Special Ed Teacher

What It’s About

Teacher spells out major profits with her sign language videos.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

It’s good that Shelby is transitioning to streaming because lots of us don’t have a DVD player anymore. The last computer I had that included one was more than five years ago!

Updating the technology is important but, of course, the real value is in her content and the relationships that she’s building. As long as you keep updating and keep nurturing, that never goes away.

Fun Fact

Researchers frequently conclude that learning sign language as a toddler can help them learn to read at an accelerated pace. By using this research, Shelby became an in-demand tutor around New York City—and eventually landed a gig tutoring Bono’s son.

Notes from Chris

Episode 621

When Shelby Rideout graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in elementary and special education, she didn’t go into teaching—she went into acting. She moved to New York City and started trying to land gigs.

Shelby knew that making it as an actress probably wasn’t going to happen immediately, so she decided to start sign language interpreting and tutoring for elementary-age kids to help make ends meet. She put up fliers around private schools across the city, and before she knew it, she was tutoring—a lot! Shelby made a name for herself and even tutored Bono’s son, who still hasn’t found what he’s looking for… and couldn’t live with or without her.

Her favorite subject to tutor was reading, but it was also a challenging one. Some kids took to it eagerly, but for those that struggled, reading was a nightmare. It damaged their self-confidence and made them timid to learn, which in turn was hurting them across their other subjects as well.

Shelby worked with kids as early as four years old who would say things like, “I hate myself” or “I’m stupid” because they couldn’t read well. It was heartbreaking, and she knew she would do anything she could to help her own children learn to read at a young age.

In fact, as time went by, she had two of them: a one-year-old and a two-year-old. As kids can do, they required a lot of attention—Shelby just wanted to do things like cook dinner without being constantly interrupted. So she came up with a plan: she would make some home videos about how to read and sign that would keep her kids entertained while she cooked.

She set up a screen in her basement, pulled out an old puppet named Paulie, and started filming. It was fun, and it allowed her to combine her three passions: acting, signing, and teaching. Altogether, this first round of videos only took an hour of time and a few dollars for a simple, white screen. (Paulie worked for free.)

And her kids loved them.

Before long, Shelby’s kids were her best party tricks. At one point, when Shelby’s son was only one year old, he signed “banana” in front of her friends and everyone was amazed. They wanted the videos for their own kids, so Shelby burned a few copies onto DVDs and gave them away. [DVDs are these things that used to exist before streaming.]

After a couple years of seeing her friends’ kids learn to communicate at rapid speed, an idea clicked. Why wasn’t she selling these videos? They were clearly working and definitely wanted by other parents.

It was a massive project, but Shelby and her husband knew it was something they were passionate about and that there was demand. Finally, after two years, Bright Signs Learning started selling on Amazon.com. The product included four videos, flashcards, and a workbook, all for just over $100.

In December of 2016, Bright Side Leaning had its first $10,000 month. And monthly sales have been between that and $15,000 ever since.

But while the slow, steady revenue growth and big upcoming opportunities have been thrilling, the best part of it all for Shelby is hearing from her customers. Their toddlers are quickly learning to read and sign at a very young age, and Shelby knows she’s helping kids all over the country become learners who will thrive in school and life beyond.

Sisters Create Bundle Of Joy With Customized Board Game

What It’s About

Two sisters create a game that inspires real, human, person-to-person contact—no batteries required.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

I think a good lesson for this one is that you can use MVP (Minimum Viable Product) principles for physical products. That’s something most people associate with tech or software, but I think it’s impressive they did it with a board game. They started with a method that clearly won’t scale but they’ve already figured out how to streamline it and can keep doing that as they sell more.

Fun Fact

In the last year, board game sales in the U.S. grew by 28 percent, per NPD Group, and global sales increased to $9.6 billion in 2016 from $9.3 billion in 2013. In addition, playing board games brings families closer together in a time where technology often makes relationships worse. The Bundle Game capitalizes on both these trends.

Notes from Chris

Episode 620
Cassie and Jacklyn Collier grew up in a typical American household. The family was close, and that hasn’t changed over the years. In fact, Cassie and Jacklyn still live together to this day, currently sharing an apartment in the big apple, New York City.

Some of their fondest memories are of playing board games with the family. They’d often sit at the table playing classic games, laughing over mistakes or other mishaps made while playing. Board games were a part of the family experience in the Collier household, something they’d bond over.

Those same happy memories were the catalyst for starting their very first side hustle. One that’s attempting to recreate the magic of that family bonding experience, through a board game of course!

But before I introduce the side hustle, let’s go back a few squares on the game board. The year is 2013, and the two sisters were struggling to find a Christmas present for their mom. They wanted to get her something truly unique and special. After brainstorming ideas they decided to create a board game that was custom made for the family. One that included inside jokes and anecdotes about all the members.

The game was a huge hit! It was as if they rolled a Yahtzee or got a royal flush in poker. The perfect game! Not only did their mom absolutely love it, but the game created more memories of the type the game was about. It was like a recursive loop of board game goodness. The impact of the game sat with them and, over the next few years they created a few more for other close friends and family.

Now, roll a 6, pass go, collect $100 and skip to September 2017. The sisters are living in New York City. Cassie is working as a financial analyst for Deutsche Bank and Jacklyn is working both as a nanny and actor. While at a party, the topic of the games came up. A friend suggested they try selling the games as a side business.

They’d played with the idea before but that small piece of external validation tipped them over the edge. The girls decided it was time to roll the dice and enter the board game business. They called their concept The Bundle Game, a completely personalized board game designed specifically for your friends and family.

Since May 2018, the Collier sisters have sold over $16,500 worth of The Bundle Game. All that off the back of $4,000 in setup costs. While that doesn’t take their time into account, they’re impressive numbers for a startup side hustle. What’s more, its given Jacklyn and Cassie a lot of faith that The Bundle Game could be something big.

Cassie has decided to work part-time for the bank, and Jacklyn is limiting her acting roles so that she can spend more time on the business. It is time they’ll certainly need as they aim to work on automating as much of the process as they can over the coming year. Their long-term goal is to eventually go full time on the side hustle and make it their full-time job.

It’s far from game over for these two sisters from New York City. Cassie and Jacklyn, it looks like you two really have this in the box!

London Photographer Rents Camera Gear 1,100 Times

What It’s About

A snapshot of a London man who buys his mom a flat with his camera rental profits.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Antonio’s advice to those wanting to rent out their own belongings on a similar platform is to start small. Develop a relationship with every client. Even if they don’t become a repeat customer, they will spread the word!

Fun Fact

In 2015 alone, transactions of the global sharing economy totaled 28.1 billion euros (this is equivalent to almost 33 billion dollars).

Notes from Chris

Episode 619

Antonio Salvani is no stranger to the world of side hustles. He works by day as a receptionist for a property management company in Central London, and in 2016 he also started taking freelance photography gigs. From then on, his evenings and weekends were spent shooting wedding and other various events.

It was in preparation for an upcoming wedding shoot back that Antonio discovered a completely different way to make money. Despite having spent a year collecting gear, Antonio still didn’t feel that he had all the camera equipment necessary to create the highest quality package for the bride.

But he also knew that traditional camera equipment rentals can be quite expensive and require a hefty deposit. The usual deposit at a camera rental shop in London can put you out up to $1,500. In addition to the large deposit, the verification process necessary for renting can be inconvenient. He complained about this to a friend who was also a photographer, and they suggested Antonio use Fat Llama to rent the equipment he needed.

If you’re not familiar with it, Fat Llama is not an up-and-coming rapper, nor is it a Jimmy Buffet song from 1980—it’s a “peer to peer” sharing platform that connects people who need to borrow something with those who could use a little extra cash.

But the term sharing implies a no-charge service, so that terminology is a little confusing. There is a charge to “borrow” items through this service. However, as Antonio found, the rate to rent through Fat Llama was much more reasonable than the classic rental method. He found that he was able to rent the gear he needed for less than £50 ($60). It was a steal of a deal!

The gear was available for pick up the same day, and the entire process was simple. From that first rental experience, Antonio was intrigued. And his next thought was—“why not rent out my own equipment on Fat Llama?”

When Antonio started, he was booking 2-3 rentals a week. This increased very quickly to 5-10 a day!  That’s right, up 5-10 bookings per day, and steadily increasing. So how does Antonio keep up with his personalized customer service with that many rentals?

First off, about 80% of these rental pickups and drop-offs occur on the weekend. Also, about 70% of Antonio’s renters are repeat customers. Antonio creates a profile each time he meets with a new client. This cuts down on his time spent getting to know history and needs with repeat customers. A lot of renters want to pick up equipment on Friday evening and drop off on Sunday. He said he spends a fair amount of time on Thursday evenings planning and messaging about pickups and drop-offs.

For the moment, Antonio is managing this system well. However, in the future, with his business growing he says he’ll need to get an assistant. His priority is keeping the exceptional customer service in place—he wants everything to be perfect, and his customers happy.

So far Antonio’s had over 1,100 rentals and says he’s met some amazing people. He’s learned so much about the equipment just by talking with those who use the gear day in and day out. He feels like he’s started a community.

He’s also made more than £25,000 ($32,400) and is putting the money toward another side hustle, buying an apartment in his hometown of Skopje, Macedonia that he will—of course—rent out on Airbnb.

Renting his camera gear out 5 times a day is a trade Antonio can picture himself in for some time to come.

The Rise and Fall of BirdSupplies.com

What It’s About

Squawk! A longstanding parrot hustle takes flight.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Once again, here’s a two-fold reminder:

Be careful about building your business on one source of income or referrals. But also know that it’s okay to treat your side hustle as “bonus money” that might go away at any time.

Perhaps it’s a matter of perspective and goals.

Fun Fact

Diane was partly inspired to start her own business when she became a stay-at-home mom. She adopted two children from Russia and realized that it would be very important for her to be around as they were adjusting, but she quickly got bored. That’s when she decided to act on her idea for BirdSupplies.com.

Notes from Chris

Episode 618

Diane Burroughs has had an affinity for birds since childhood. Her family raised chickens as she was growing up. Later, as an adult with two children of her own, she found herself rehabilitating injured birds that she found in her neighborhood.

After one successful rescue, Diane and her young children realized how much they missed the bird’s company. It didn’t take much convincing on the kid’s part to get a feathery friend of their own. They set out to find the perfect type of parrot for the family, and Diane soon adopted Peanut, a cockatiel. Once they felt like they could confidently take care of Peanut, Diane adopted a larger and more challenging bird: a Moluccan Cockatoo named Peachy.

Diane was passionate about making sure her birds were properly enriched. Through her extensive research, she knew that the parrot’s exoticism meant that they needed specialized care. Without it, the birds were likely to experience significant stress. Yet, Diane couldn’t find any quality products in her hometown.

I know what you’re thinking… why didn’t Diane just order the products on Amazon? Duh. In literally two days it could be there with prime.

Well, back in 1998, (penicillin was not yet invented, the Model-T automobile was still on the highway, and we were all using dial-up internet) the word Amazon mostly just meant a river in South America. There weren’t a ton of online shopping opportunities back then anyway, especially in a niche market like bird care.

Diane was a stay at home mom at the time and had always dreamed of owning her own business. She knew that parrots were a popular pet—the 3rd most popular in the United States, in fact. Diane also knew that parrots had always been expensive, high maintenance pets.

Although it was risky, Diane had a hunch that the same upper-income people that were attracted to parrots would also be attracted to new technology like e-commerce. She decided to invest $12,000 in her online store, BirdSupplies.com. $9,000 went into web development and infrastructure, and the last $3,000 into inventory.

Diane’s hunch ended up proving right. In the first year, she made $12,000 worth of sales from selling 350 products. There were few competitors, and Diane chose to sell high-end products, resulting in a greater profit. For the next twelve years, Diane’s business grew and grew. She was selling all kinds of items—from bird toys to cages to vitamins—she had it all.

She had a good six months with this. Her SEO was fantastic—whenever people searched for bird supplies of all kinds, she was at the top. Then, in 2011, disaster hit. Diane was relying entirely on Google search results for her sales leads. Well, Google introduced a new algorithm to penalize sites that were using that particular SEO method. This penalty essentially clipped the wings of BirdSupplies.com. It went from being the number one keyword result to number 165.

Diane had gone from making $250K a year to just $50K. It was devastating. She cried fowl, but Google didn’t listen. Also, fowl doesn’t even relate to parrots—another problem. She had to go back to working full-time, and it took her a grueling 18 months to get the penalty removed.

Diane learned the hard way to not put all of her parrot eggs in one basket. She doesn’t put the blame on the Google penalty itself, but on her only using Google for marketing. If she had diversified her advertising, the Google penalty wouldn’t have been as huge of a hit.

Now Diane works on having BirdSupplies.com rank highly wherever she can, not just Google. Not only that, but the 18 months of slow business gave Diane the opportunity to reevaluate her business.

Within the last few years, Diane has narrowed her focus from all things birds to almost exclusively selling feather plucking products. Parrots have a tendency to pull out their feathers. This can be caused by a number of reasons, from boredom to anxiety. Birds live very stressful lives, you know. They have to ask for crackers. They have to repeat things you say. That’s about it… but still, it’s hard.

Now her business is much more manageable. With her specialization, Diane has now written a series of eBooks all about feather plucking. The new business is making $100,000/year. ($100,000/year in feather plucking prevention! And they said it couldn’t be done.)

Although the Google penalty seemed like it was the universe flipping the bird at her business, Diane grew and ultimately became stronger through her struggle. Like a parrot phoenix rising through the ashes, overcoming its desire to pluck her own feathers, she is now stretching her wings, flush with birdseed and PayPal deposits.

Weekly Recap: Don’t Compete with Amazon

Notes from Chris

Episode 617

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

A listener by the name of James reached out to ask what my advice would be for people looking to compete with Amazon and eBay—how can small independent shops thrive against big companies?

My advice is don’t compete … you could never compete with Amazon, fair or unfair. But meanwhile, thousands of people are making a living using Amazon’s models (Fulfilled by Amazon, Merch by Amazon, etc.). So you either adapt to one of those or you find a way to do something different.

To hear more, check out today’s Weekly Recap!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW:

This is a new segment we’re trying out with the help of side hustlers that we’ve featured in the past. Today, we have an update from Amanda MacArthur, who was featured very early in the show on Ep. 11.

Attorney Defends Women’s Right To Good Content

What It’s About

Frustrated with superficial offerings, this woman takes content for women to the next level.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

To market, Ashley took key aspects, or demographics, from her audience and targeted these groups. She knew that she had a small audience and wanted to grow it quickly, so she jumped right into using paid posts to spread the word.

This is why it’s so important to narrow down your target audience instead of promoting your side hustle to a more general audience.

Fun Fact

Part of what makes Harness Magazine so unique is the fact that it features real stories from real women. She features a large number of readers and female movers and shakers that her readers can learn from. One of Ashley’s contributors cried when she saw her work has been published in Harness Magazine. This really gave Ashley the feeling she was doing worthwhile work!

Notes from Chris

Episode 616

Ashley Rector was frustrated with the media. Over the last few years she’d noticed a discouraging pattern. Every radio show, magazine or TV segment targeted at women was focused on the same issues; the latest hairstyles, celebrity gossip and fad diets.

There was little of substance. Little that was honest. Little that showed a real glimpse of life—her life—as a modern woman. She didn’t care about Hollywood home-wreckers or hot new heels. And, as it turned out, neither did her other female friends.

The more people Ashley spoke about this issue to the women she knew, both in her professional life as an attorney and her personal life, the more she got the same answers. They were looking for authentic stories which represented their lives as women in the 21st century.

To try and find these stories, Ashley turned her attention online. She looked for little-known magazines which spoke about the issues she cared about, but couldn’t find anything reliable. The odd blog here and there, maybe an article or two, but none of them felt quite right.

Ashley was disappointed by not defeated. If the magazine she wanted didn’t exist, why not create it herself? That way she could create and control the stories she published and ensure they spoke about the topics she cared about.

So, Ashley set to work on creating the magazine. She called it Harness Magazine, which came from the mission statement she wrote, which was to “harness” the voices, ideas, and stories of real women around the world.

Ashley decided the magazine would be split into two formats.

The first would an online publication. Here she would share articles and ideas which were submitted from women around the world. These stories would help to build an audience and build an online brand around her mission.

The second would be a print magazine. Here she would share what she refers to as the “pure essence” of the online version. It would be the best and most relevant stories from the women who wrote for her, with additional and bonus content women couldn’t find online.

As the online presence of Harness began to grow, it attracted advertisers. It wasn’t long before she was earning at least $300-$500 a month from sponsored posts.

The magazine makes money from these wholesale orders and advertising placement, as well as a subscription model Ashley has created on the Harness website. Issue 1 brought in just $400, but by the time issue II was ready for print, she’d scored a $5,000 wholesale order and other orders that added up to more than $21,000.

Looking to the future, Ashley wants to continue to grow the print version of the magazine. She’s on a mission to harness the power of real women’s stories… and she wants to build it in a sustainable way.
