Serial Side Hustler Works from 180 Sq Ft Airstream

What It’s About

Engineer uses his love of budgeting to map out adventure.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Nick used freelancing as a stepping stone to the side hustle he ultimately wanted to build. If you’re looking to start freelance writing, he’s mapped out seven steps that will help you be successful. Here’s a PDF file with the seven steps, and watch his YouTube video for a more in-depth breakdown.

Fun Fact

More than 10 million households own an RV, and they’re not all retirees (read more about it, here!). 1 million Americans live out of their RV, many of whom are young couples like Nick and Hanna and families working remotely.

Notes from Chris

Episode 889

Nick True has had side hustles all his life. Throughout childhood, he sold homemade bread and candy bars out of his backpack. Later, he transitioned to teaching piano lessons and tutoring students for the ACT.

When he went away to college, Nick took his love of the hustle with him. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and started working in the power industry … but he also started his first blog. It was called True Tightwad—a name that was a play on his last name and a nod to another passion of his: personal finance and budgeting.

While his friends growing up were dropping their allowance on video games and skateboards, Nick was focused on saving. Instead of poring over graphic novels and comics, Nick devoured books on personal finance.

So, when Nick realized that he hated his day job as an engineer, he doubled down his efforts to save enough money so that he could eventually leave … and maybe even begin a new career.

But, although his goal was to share his knowledge with others, he knew deep down that teaching in the traditional sense wouldn’t satisfy his desires either. You see, Nick and his wife, Hanna, had lofty travel goals that would make staying in one place stifling, and he didn’t want to feel chained down by the strict constraints of the traditional education system.

When Nick stumbled across the world of online entrepreneurship, he realized that maybe he could combine his passion for finance and teaching, all the while creating the freedom he most wanted.

Nick started out writing posts about the day-to-day aspects of managing money: topics like building solid money saving habits, planning for big expenses, and finding ways to simplify. While the focus of his content was on personal finance, the tips he provided were more of a means to an end—that end being the freedom to live your own adventure. In other words, money was a tool to experience all that life had to offer.

To monetize the blog, he took advantage of affiliate marketing and display ads. Despite his best efforts, however, the blog income didn’t amount to much the first two years—just pocket change, really. But what it did do was help generate finance-related freelance work which was priceless in getting his foot in the door within the personal finance community.

Freelancing was never the long-term goal, but it was an ideal stepping stone. It allowed him to build his business skill set, work with key players in the finance industry, and sustain an income that would support the early stages of his passion project.

After transitioning to video and roping in Hanna, a steady stream of subscribers brought in $300-$400 in affiliate profits on a monthly basis. But more than the ad revenue, YouTube also generated a new income stream that Nick had not considered before—coaching. Subscribers who followed the channel started requesting one-on-one assistance creating a budget that would fit their situation and lifestyle.

While general advice was great, it wasn’t always applicable to entrepreneurs or people with multiple jobs, to people with large families, those who get paid on an odd schedule, own real-estate, or have some other unique arrangement. So, Nick and Hanna tapped into this market by offering coaching sessions that included a 90-minute one-on-one video call with screen sharing, their notes, a session summary, next steps that person should take, and unlimited questions via email. They set their rates to $225/session, and let their audience know that they were available.

By early 2019, Mapped Out Money was bringing in $1,200-$3,000 per month—split between YouTube ads, affiliate revenue for a budgeting tool Nick recommends, and one-on-one coaching clients.

Since starting Mapped Out Money, Nick was finally able to leave his day job, and he and Hanna have been living in an Airstream, traveling around the U.S. Staying true to their beliefs in the positive effects of minimization, their living space comes to a grand total of 180 sq ft, AND they travel with two cats and two dogs! (They call themselves the “True Zoo,” after their last name.)

Over the next year, Nick hopes to build Mapped Out Money to a sustainable level. While he enjoys working with several of his freelance clients, he’d like to get the side hustle to a place where freelancing work could be optional.

RV life has fit Nick and Hanna’s values so well, they plan to continue on the road for many years to come. Keeping the freedom to work remotely and control their own time will allow them to pursue their other ambitions in the future, like adopting kids, being able to visit their parents, continuing to travel, and staying “true” to their personal finance goals.

Indoor Garden System Raises $226,542 on Kickstarter

What It’s About

A growing side hustle that becomes a massive crowdfunding success.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Why is a pre-launch so important for crowdfunding? Three reasons: building momentum, creating social proof, and capitalizing on a sense of ownership.

It used to be possible to see crazy, viral Kickstarter campaigns just happen. These days, most of the one that really take off are a work of art in terms of strategy. You have to put in a lot of effort on the front-end to achieve the best possible outcome.

Fun Fact

Both of David’s grandmothers were entrepreneurs. One started a nursery, that grew into a school, and eventually into three schools with 100 kids in each of them. The other was in the fashion industry in downtown Boston. He loves that the entrepreneurial spirit is in his veins.

Notes from Chris

Episode 888

Around Valentine’s Day of 2017, David Stevens was looking for the perfect gift for his girlfriend, Kersti. A few months before, she had mentioned how much she missed having a garden. Living in a California city with little room outside meant that it was really hard to grow plants.

David started researching and came across something called an indoor (or hydroponic) growing system. As the name suggests, it allows people to grow plants inside. He thought it would be the perfect fix, but he soon realized that it too came up short.

Most of the options he discovered could only hold a few small herbs, but Kersti wanted to be able to grow fruits and vegetables too. David kept searching and eventually found that some people were making bigger growing systems out of PVC pipes—but they weren’t very attractive and most people kept them in their basements. David wanted a product that could be part of the house to bring some greenery into their living room or bedroom.

He never found the perfect indoor gardening system, but he did find something else: an idea.

He knew that Kersti couldn’t be the only person who was searching for a product like this. More and more people were living in urban areas, all facing the same issues. Not only that, but many of these city dwellers were becoming more health conscious and concerned about where their food came from and whether or not it had been treated with pesticides.

After seeing people online making their own large-scale indoor growing systems, he knew that there was a significant, untapped market for a better indoor gardening system. He had always wanted to start a business of his own, and this was an opportunity too good to pass up.

David started pitching his idea for IGWorks to as many people who would listen, but potential investors turned him away because of his product’s steep price. To be sustainable, it would need to cost well over $500/unit.

Then, one of his advisers from the Founder Institute introduced him to a group who specialized in helping people launch Kickstarter campaigns. They had already raised thousands of dollars for other hydroponic products.

For David, a lack of money was the one thing that kept his business from really blooming. By creating a successful crowdfunding campaign, he might actually be able to get enough cash to really get it going.

As they prepared for the campaign itself, David learned how important it was to build up an audience before launching it. He knew that 20-30% of the total funding typically comes from the very first day, so email reminders and press releases are vital to the success of the overall campaign.

Not only that, but it was important that they created the right incentives for donors. In this case, David promised to sell his products for a reduced price. Rather than the normal $850 for a unit, backers would get it anywhere from 18-47% off, depending on how much they donated.

This spring, David officially launched his Kickstarter with a goal of $20,000. On May 17th, the final day of the fundraiser, he had brought in $226,542 from 409 backers.

Because David hired professional help and was strategic about how to launch his Kickstarter, he was able to make enough money to grow his idea into the blossoming business he had first imagined a year earlier.

Environmental Marketer Creates Eco-Friendly “Energy Bites”

What It’s About

A bite-sized side hustle that packs a punch!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Tom says that having a side hustle has benefited him personally in the deepest of ways. As he put it:

“Our society tries to define us by what we do for work, but when you decide to take control of the narrative and refuse to be put neatly into one bucket, your entire life changes. You wake up with a profound energy every day and you realize how capable you are.”

Fun Fact

While getting Unwrapp’d off the ground, Tom admitted to sneaking out during his lunch breaks to deliver cases of product to local grocery stores. Then he’d return to his day job in the afternoon before heading back to the stores at night to demo his eco-friendly energy bars to shoppers!

Notes from Chris

Episode 887

Tom Miner is the founder of Unwrapp’d: a doughy, eco-conscious energy bar taking the Midwest by storm. What began as a home-based kitchen operation has transformed into a commercial enterprise with wholesale distribution across nine states.

And it all started back in 2015.

Before he transitioned to a job at Crocs, the much-loved, much-hated footwear company, Tom worked as an environmental marketer for the EPA in Washington D.C. During that time, he picked up a fierce “four energy bars-a-day” nutrition habit.

He was eating so many bars that his office wastebasket was littered with wrappers. “Hmm. I’m probably undoing all the good I’m doing at work.” With that thought, he started researching the recyclability of the packaging and learned that the wrappers have to be thrown into the trash due to the material.

He was also devastated to learn that most of those bars he’d been eating were not just served in unsustainable packaging, they were chock-full of added sugars and artificial sweeteners.

Tom was crushed! He set out to make a better, healthier, and environmentally-friendly alternative.

He bought simple ingredients like fruit, seeds, and nuts and pureed all of it in a food processor. But he rarely formed bars out of what he was making. It was doughy, like cookie dough. But he liked it like that, so he started searching online for similar products.

He found edible cookie doughs served in recyclable tubs and a few kinds of bars that didn’t have added sugars, but nothing that encompassed both options.

Tom got to work with the help of his roommate at the time (and current business partner Reed McIntyre). They spent the next four months working on recipe development for what he would call Unwrapp’d. During the summer of 2016, they took their creation to a local farmers market.

After having a successful summer at the farmer’s market, they decided to try their hands at a wholesale operation. They developed official packaging, made better labels, and got their wholesale license. Unwrapp’d debut on the shelves of a handful of local, independently-owned grocery stores in April 2017. It was the first nutrition bar to be sold in recyclable tubs!

It’s been quite a journey for Tom, and his annual revenue this year will hit a quarter of a million dollars! His initial startup costs? Just under $1,000. Tom has since left his day job, transitioning full-time with the side hustle turned business.

The Unwrapp’d team is now pursuing national distribution. Tom has also started consulting for nonprofits on marketing strategies, with plans to launch his own agency sometime next year. He still eats a lot of energy snacks throughout the day, but now he gets them much closer to the source.

Designer Performs Magic, Turns Dream Into Reality

What It’s About

A magician sets aside the magician’s code to share the secret behind his magical side hustle.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

For aspiring magicians, David has been happy to share some advice—there is no magician’s code stopping him here. Start by having solid routines that you can perform blindfolded. Put together a showreel, no matter how small and limited it might be. Magic is ultimately a sensory experience, and you need to make sure that people are as intrigued as you are. Once you have the basics down, you can start expanding your repertoire and catering your performances to different audiences.

Fun Fact

A deck of cards generally does not last much more than a single gig. There are several reasons for this: 1) the audience generally likes to keep signed cards as souvenirs, 2) there’s an abundance of heavy-handed shuffling techniques, and 3) drink-soaked surfaces often result in the speedy destruction of a deck.

Notes from Chris

Episode 886
Ever since he was given a magic book of simple tricks as a child, David Nolan—not to be confused with David Copperfield—has been enthralled by magic. But while he enjoyed his tricks in private and performed occasionally at a friend or relative’s birthday party, he never sought to practice his art in public.

To David, magic was not just about performance; it was about the theory and history behind every trick. Mastery was his priority, not the spotlight that came with performing.

But later in life, when David heard that a magic-themed bar in his area was holding auditions for magicians, he jumped at the opportunity. A British graphic designer by day, David was happy with his work and never considered performing magic for strangers, but he realized that this was a challenge that he just had to take up.

So even though the idea of performing was terrifying, he auditioned for the role. His years of practice would pay off as the bar hired him as their resident magician!

This gig would lay the foundation on which David would build his new creative outlet. Six weeks after landing the role at the magic bar, he performed his first show. It was during this first act that he realized how much he loved the adrenaline he felt as he performed every part of his carefully rehearsed set. Even though doing three stand-up shows each night was more challenging than he had anticipated, he knew that there would be no better reward than amazing others.

It was also a good complement to his day job: Life as a designer meant a lot of work in isolation, and performing magic gave him an opportunity for creative expression and meeting new people.

Determined to accelerate his magic career, David decided that he needed to build a name for himself beyond the Houdini bar. He would give out his business cards to spectators who came to watch him at the bar, which sometimes turned into bookings for him months down the road.

He also resolved to build up his social media pages—this turned into another avenue for potential clients to get in touch after watching his showreels. It wasn’t quite as easy as pulling a rabbit out of a hat, but these efforts turned into opportunities to perform at corporate events, private parties, and even at weddings. Quite the sleight of hand for someone who not too long ago had never performed publicly!

Although he initially had no intention of making money from performing magic, he’s now managed to generate enough profit in year one to cover his share of his mortgage. With stronger branding, marketing efforts, and an increased skill set, he’s confident that he will do even better in his second year.

Like David, you too can turn your dream into reality. It might take more than a wave of the wand, but the reveal is worth the effort.

Juice Bar Owner Gets Weighed Down With Blankets

What It’s About

One blanket that outweighs them all!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Hush Blanket’s success has come from a perfect trifecta of having the right product, locating the perfect audience, and providing radical customer service. Get each one of these right, and you’ll be positioned for a major success just like these guys!

Fun Fact

Hush Blankets has a customer support person behind the live chat box for ~20 hours per day. Not only has it led to more consumer sales, it’s also led to dozens of large wholesale orders because the humans could ask the right questions that typical chatbots wouldn’t know to.

Notes from Chris

Episode 885
Aaron Spivak loved his juice bar business. He had eight of them throughout Toronto, but growing them was a major burden. Each location was really only accessible to the people in nearby neighborhoods—which meant, if he wanted to keep getting new customers, he’d have to keep opening new brick-and-mortar stores.

When e-commerce started to pick up steam, Aaron was captivated. He realized he could sell juice and smoothie related products to anyone without needing a physical location, so he tried it out by building a basic WordPress site and learning as he went—and it worked. His juice brand, Revitalize, slowly grew to have customers all over Canada.

But, always up for experimenting, Aaron wanted to try something else. A friend of his named Lior kept mentioning an idea—weighted blankets. That friend had seen how helpful a heavy blanket could be for reducing stress and anxiety and sleeping better, and when they both noticed a successful Kickstarter campaign in early 2017 for a very similar product, they decided to just go for it.

Aaron started calling up manufacturers in the blanket and textile spaces. He called five, then ten, then fifty. The rejections just kept rolling in. Nobody wanted to manufacture a really high-quality blanket at small quantities. Sales reps kept trying to convince him to go with a lower quality material—but Aaron didn’t want a mediocre blanket. He wanted a stellar one. One blanket to weigh down them all.

Finally, after nearly 150 calls, Aaron found a partner who was willing to create the blankets. Before he and Lior placed their first order, they wanted to see if they could get some pre-sales to soften the blow of the initial inventory investment, which was priced at nearly $90,000 Canadian dollars.

So they set up a really simple Shopify store with their product, the Hush Blanket, listed them at about $200 (these blankets aren’t cheap), then launched some pre-sale ads on Google. The two spent all day together working on logistics, waiting eagerly for that first sale. But it didn’t come.

The next day, Aaron and Lior kept waiting—but no sales. Their ads were getting lots of impressions… why weren’t people clicking and buying? Even though it had only been two days, the lack of a single sale was heartbreaking.

And then, at 9pm that night, while Aaron was gathering his things to go home, they heard it: “Cha-ching!” Aaron’s Shopify app made the noise they’d been waiting for—their first sale! They high-fived, spend a few minutes dreaming of the next few days, and parted ways.

Just 18 months since launch, Hush Blankets is already clearing multi-six figures each year in profit. Much of it has been reinvested in the business, including the introduction of their new Hush Iced Blanket—a cooler version of the original blanket for warm weather.

And while the money is great, it’s something else that really makes Aaron and his partner proud: the customer reviews. The business is making a difference. People with anxiety are sleeping better than they have in years. Aaron himself is more of a restless soul: he’s now looking for his next big idea.

Anchors Aweigh! Graphic Designer Leads Guided Sailing Tours

What It’s About

An Aussie sails away to Croatia on a strong current of profits.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Although starting out, Chris said he did have to get creative to get noticed by Google’s search engine. He did his best to get linked to as many websites and blogs as possible. It was about saying, “Yes.” If the opportunity to get interviewed by a blog or company came along, he’d take it.

This “Yes” mentality paid off in 2018 when he attracted the attention of Shark Tank Australia and found himself pitching his brand on national TV. That spot earned him some mentoring from the Sharkies!

Fun Fact

Although it probably wasn’t fun at the time, Chris’ first tour nearly didn’t happen because of a PayPal fiasco. PayPal froze his account right before he had to use his funds to pay for the boat. They weren’t going to release the funds until the tour was delivered—but he couldn’t deliver the tour without the funds! Fortunately for both Chris and us, he secured a loan from friends and family to get his first tour off the ground and into the water!

Notes from Chris

Episode 884

Approaching his 30th birthday, Australian Chris Tabone felt it was time for a change. An established graphic designer for nearly ten years, he decided to take a year off to travel the world. But after nine months of hostel stays and banana pancakes, money was in short supply and Chris was thinking of ending his globetrotting then and there.

Not quite ready to cut the adventure short, he applied for a tour guide position and got the job. It only paid $78 a day, but his meals and accommodations were covered. Plus, he’d get to travel all around Europe for free!

He ended up staying in the role for several years, learning a lot about the industry. After a while, many of his typical passengers (who were in their 20s) started asking him what tours he would recommend when they returned in a few years.

They were getting too old for youth accommodations but also didn’t want to end up on a cruise ship that served Baked Alaska after ballroom dancing and bingo. This was when Chris spotted a gap in the market. The demographic of young professionals in their late twenties to late thirties just wasn’t getting much love from the guided tour industry.

So, he decided an experiment was in order…

The next off-season, Chris went back home to Melbourne and put pen to paper, figuring out how he could create something for this age group.

Then, he leveraged his large network of industry contacts and made the decision to sell sailing tours in Croatia for the following summer. These Mediterranean trips were big winners and they appealed perfectly to his demographic.

Using his background in design, Chris put together a website, created social media accounts, and started contacting all of his old passengers through Facebook. He was able to convince 40 of them to trust him with the idea that he could take them on a spectacular adventure—only now with his own company, Koda Sail.

the Koda Sail tours run between $1,200 to $1,500 per person (up from ~$900 per person on his first tour). He’s upgraded his selection to four boats that run during the summer months. The tours run for seven days and specifically target young professionals.

The business currently brings in just under $300,000 a year, with word of mouth still being his number one marketing tool.

For Chris, it’s full steam ahead with no plans of taking his hands off the rudder anytime soon. He plans to add a new destination every year, starting this year with Turkey. Italy, the Greek Islands, Asia, and the Caribbean are also in the works.

High School Teacher Spins His Way to Profits

What It’s About

In-person record cutting spins sweet sounding profits!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Michael recommends finding something that you are passionate about that nobody else does. If you see something coming that is interesting to you and has a steep barrier to entry that you are willing to overcome, then you could be on the right path. If it’s easy and popular already, you’ve probably missed out.

Fun Fact

Record sales nearly died in the 2000s, but last year, vinyl record sales grew by 12% to 9.7 million sold. One company in the UK even offers the option to have your ashes or those of a loved one pressed into a working album!

Notes from Chris

Episode 882

Michael Dixon has more of a side hustle theme than one specific service or product. He runs several projects, all based—in one way or another—around vinyl records. Why records? Well, Mike became obsessed with his parents’ old vinyl records as a kid. He believes there’s value in a tangible product that is not mass produced, unlike streaming digital audio files.

Since he was 15, Mike has been in the music industry, playing in bands, promoting festivals, running record labels… and the list goes on. About a decade ago, he was working a full-time job as a high school teacher when he began his first vinyl related business. He would order small batches of records from New Zealand, from one of the only lathe cut record makers in the world at that time.

Cutting a record using a lathe means that sound waves are focused into a needle tip. As the needle vibrates, it etches grooves into the record disc. The grooves are the physical equivalent to the sound waves. And voila! You have yourself a record.

Lathe cut records are made one at a time, so small orders can be easily handled. Vinyl records made at a pressing plant are mass produced and require large minimum orders.

But when Mike’s orders from New Zealand started taking too long to fill, he wondered if he could learn to cut the records himself. He began buying old, broken lathe machines that were built in the 1940s and 50s. It took him a year, but he figured out the process. This led to Mike’s second business: vintage record lathe repair, restoration, and parts sales. He runs this business with the help of a business partner named Kris.

Mike got started with his live record cutting booths at museums and small festivals, doing the work just for fun. One day, the Converse Shoe Company took notice. They contacted him about cutting records for Coachella, where the majority of their party guests were in the marketing and entertainment industry. Captivated with the process, people started hiring Mike and Kris for corporate parties, festivals, and other events. It hasn’t slowed down since. Just being at the events is their best form of advertising.

Mike’s average monthly profits are approximately $3,500. He admits there are feast and famine periods. Being employed in a super-niche business is often a struggle—paychecks are unsteady and work comes and goes. More important to him than the monetary profit is what he calls “Standard of Living Profitability,” which he has in spades. He gets to go on company-sponsored work trips all over the world and spends his time hustling music, art, and vinyl—which he loves. He also gets to meet and work with artists he’s admired for years.

He doesn’t know anyone who has half as much fun doing their job as he does. Turning Mobile Vinyl Recorders into his full-time job has dramatically improved Mike’s quality of life.

Next on the turnstile for Mike is more of the same. He has some events in the US and Europe this summer and a Southwest tour for his science of sound presentation. He’s also developing new equipment for record cutting and working with some of his favorite artists who are recording with his record label.

Beer Blogger Crafts Side Hustle from Craft Beer

What It’s About

A Texas transplant finds a way to get paid tossing back the best beer the Lone Star State has to offer.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Caitlin says that you should dive headfirst into your niche. When she started getting serious about marketing her beer blog, she read all the books and articles she could get her hands on. She listened to all the beer podcasts, went to Brewer 5ks, and even volunteered at beer festivals. In short, she put in the work to become an influencer and expert in beer, and now it’s really paid off!

Fun Fact

The iconic Texas beer brand, Lone Star, was so popular during the 1970s and 1980s that the beer was served at a Texas-themed party thrown by the Kennedys. Their Manhattan party took place in Bloomingdales and little, old Lone Star was there to refresh the crowd.

Notes from Chris

Episode 881

By day, Caitlin Johnson works for a small eCommerce startup, and by night she’s working on her blog, Big World Small Girl. The blog showcases her favorite places in her new city and beyond. She’s happiest exploring new neighborhoods, meeting passionate people, and relaxing on porches with a cold beer in hand.

But let’s go back a bit…

From an early age, Caitlin was an avid reader. Books carried her away on adventures to faraway places in her mind. They allowed this small girl to explore the big world around her from the comfort of her home. Later in life, this love of books would inspire her to write about her own adventures.

When she reached the legal drinking age, Caitlin enjoyed taking day trips to wineries and breweries around her home in Virginia. She would then write about her experiences on her blog. Her first blog was simply a means of creative expression and a way for her to share her passion. But in addition to honing her writing skills, Caitlin was also learning HTML, SEO, and other foundational internet skills which would also soon prove to be instrumental.

At the age of twenty-three, Caitlin took a month-long, solo trip to Puerto Rico. That trip inspired a new blog and a new brand: Big World, Small Girl. And now that she’d had a small taste of this big world, she decided it was time to see more. She took several long exploratory weekend trips to different cities around the country in search of a new home before discovering Austin, Texas. With a young, hip population, huge craft beer community and renowned live music venues, it was the perfect match.

Whether by good planning or good fortune, Caitlin’s new home turned out to be a great choice for what would soon be her side hustle. According to the Nielsen Company, adults in Austin read and contribute to blogs more than those in any other U.S. metropolitan area.

In addition to her love of the live music scene, Caitlin also loves craft beer. But more than just the delicious, refreshing taste, she loves the stories behind the breweries, the brands, and the people.

She also appreciates the impact they have on the community and neighborhood that supports them. There are 32 breweries in Austin—and aside from the people who write for local publications, there weren’t any bloggers or influencers focusing solely on craft beer! So she decided to fill that role.

With a goal to become Austin’s premier craft beer guru, Caitlin poured herself into all things beer related—from publications to podcasts, soaking up all the knowledge she could. She also started writing about them, sharing her discoveries and crafting the blog’s content to be more associated with both Austin and beer.

And then she started looking for sponsorships: companies that would pay her to promote their brands. Among others, she signed up Jameson Whiskey, Wheatley Vodka, and Dogfish Head Brewery. Her largest sponsorship pays $1,000/month, and in total, they make up a third of her income.

It’s also brought her an incredible range of experiences, from going to private concerts on Willie Nelson’s ranch, to taking a road trip through Texas to visit 51 breweries.

Coming up next: more travel! She works remotely for her day job, giving her the flexibility to work from the road. Naturally, she’s planning her trips around the craft breweries of the world.

Second Grade Teacher Earns Second Income

What It’s About

Elementary school teacher moonlights as a highly organized wedding planner.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Nicole believes that you should start by educating yourself on the business you want to grow. Then, use that knowledge and get very specific about who your ideal client is. For Nicole, her ideal client knows exactly what they want on their wedding day, and they are looking for a take-charge professional (like her) that knows their craft.

Fun Fact

There are an average of 2.4 million weddings in the United States every year. With a typical wedding these days costing over $30,000, this is a huge market. From flowers to function centers, there is a massive industry surrounding weddings with many angles to profit from!

Notes from Chris

Episode 880

When Nicole Gaskin got married, she organized everything herself, designed the centerpieces, arranged the flowers, and handled dozens of other important details. It was all the more complicated because hers was a destination wedding. Getting a group of guests organized in a place far from home is like herding sheep, albeit very well dressed sheep.

The wedding took place in the summer. It was the perfect time to take a break because Nicole is a full-time grade school teacher. She had ample holidays at that time of year.

When she returned home, she still had a fair bit of vacation left and nothing much to do. Her now husband returned to work and with the wedding planning over, she felt a little lost. Nicole is an extrovert who is always on the go, and summers as a teacher can be mundane. Rather than sit around with her feet up basking in newly wedded bliss, she decided to hustle.

Nicole was reminded of a small venture she’d had in the past planning birthdays, family reunions, and baby showers. With her event planning experience, combined with her new wedding organization skills, she came up with a name: Weddings By Nicole G. The two skill sets were a perfect match. No one objected to their union!

Nicole moved fast. Before the summer was even half over, she was off and running. And within just two weeks, Nicole had her first client.

Through her online marketing efforts, a soon to be bride found her website and booked her services. The wedding was in August, just a month away. Nicole would be responsible for making sure the whole day ran smoothly.

As the next few months went on, new clients kept trickling in. In addition to leads coming through websites, she began to receive referrals. She also occasionally worked to assist other local wedding planners to help get her name out there.

After her first few clients, she got a little more intentional about the types of clients she wanted to serve. An ideal client for her became someone who knows exactly what they want already. They need a professional with an eye for detail who can carry out their vision and create the perfect ceremony for them.

The more time went on, Nicole spotted another opportunity she’d been missing. Honeymoons! The planning for the actual day was great, but she realized if she could also arrange a dream honeymoon for the newly married couple she could earn a commission from travel companies. So, she began offering this as part of her services. She liked the feeling of not leaving money on the table.

Weddings are known to be expensive, but for the savvy side hustler, this presents an opportunity. In Nicole’s case, that opportunity has meant an extra twelve thousand dollars profit outside of her day job over the last twelve months. Of course, she hasn’t made enough to quit teaching yet. It’s all been largely reinvested into her side business, to help 2019 be even better.

For Nicole, the best part of this whole journey is that she is fulfilling her passion to create beautiful events and memories for her clients on their wedding day. Her side hustle allows her to know that she’s created an experience they won’t forget—and she’s doing it on her own terms.
