Q&A: Should I quit my job and go full time with my hustle?

What It’s About

A listener wants to know when to make their side hustle their main hustle.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1210

Should I quit my job and go full time with my hustle?

It’s a great place to be: your side hustle is earning as much money as your job does. But what comes next … and how do you navigate this choice? Your answer might be different from someone else’s, but what might be helpful to know in making this decision?

Like I said, it’s a good problem to have. Let’s talk it out with today’s caller.

“I’m excited AND scared about quitting my job. Over the past two years, I’ve built my side hustle to the point where I can quit my job. Yay! It’s been a long road, but now I’m bringing in almost as much money from my second paycheck as I do from my main one. I also think I can grow the business more with more time and attention.

But I’m also terrified. Ack! Is this normal? In particular, I’m feeling stuck about the health insurance issue. Should I just not worry about it? Thanks and can’t wait to hear what you have to say.”

Q&A: How to ethically source products made in overseas factories?

What It’s About

What should this listener know about sourcing products from overseas?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1208

There are lots of advantages to sourcing a product from an overseas factory, and in this day and age, it’s not terribly difficult to learn how to do that. We’ve had many case studies featuring lots of people who’ve successfully navigated those waters.

But … how can you ethically source products coming from overseas? How can you know for sure that what you’re buying is made under fair working conditions, environmentally safe surroundings, and all-around not destroying the planet or the lives of people who really aren’t that well off?

It’s a fair question, but a hard one to answer—I always want to be fully honest with you.

“I’m thinking about creating a product and I’m interested in ethical sourcing. The product needs to be assembled from a few basic components … and I have concerns about overseas factories. I know it’s cheap to get products made in China or elsewhere, but can I make sure there are fair labor laws and good working conditions for the employees? I want to make money, but not at the expense of someone’s welfare. Appreciate you taking the time to answer my question and looking forward to hearing from you.”

Couple Crumbles Debt with Gourmet Cookies

What It’s About

Proof that the answer to life challenges is more cookies.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

It’s important to think about how to grows your business during the early planning stages. Here’s what Courtney and Lindsey have to say about the subject: “If you know that you have a good product and a good market, evaluate your manufacturing methods upfront to ensure you can meet the demand or be prepared to have some looooonnng days to meet your customer needs.”

Fun Fact

The chocolate chip cookie was not invented until 1938! Like many culinary discoveries, the chocolate chip cookie was actually created by accident. American chef Ruth Graves Wakefield and her husband Kenneth ran a tourist lodge called the Toll House Inn (yes, that Toll House!). One day, when Wakefield was baking, she ran out of baker’s chocolate and decided to use Nestlé semi sweet chocolate instead. To her surprise, the chocolate didn’t melt, and the chocolate chip cookie was officially born!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1207
Baking has always been part of Courtney and Lindsey Norton’s marriage. In fact, right around when they first got married, Lindsey learned that baking could be a ideal way to relieve stress. This soon became a running joke with Courtney’s buddies at his office. Whenever he would bring in delicious baked goods to share, they would tease him by asking “What do you did to her this time?”

After a while, those comments turned into, “Hey, you need to go stress your wife out some more!” Courtney’s co-workers couldn’t get enough.

Around the same time, the couple had been thinking more and more about starting a side hustle. They were working to get out of debt, and they knew that an extra source of income would make a big difference in their quality of life.

Their thoughts turned to Lindsey’s excellent baking abilities. The town of Cookeville, Tennessee, where they lived, had a desperate shortage of cookie chefs. Decorated sugar cookies and old-fashioned chocolate chip were popular, but lead times at other companies to get the tasty treats could be well over a month.

Even though sugar and chocolate chip were popular, no one was offering a wider selection of gourmet flavors. The couple found a hole in the market, and they were ready to fill it … with peanut butter, coconut, and caramel!

They called their new business Nookies Cookie Co, as a combination of their last name, Norton, and the word “cookies.” And then they said: Let’s bake this happen.

Their first-ever order came only two days later from a woman they went to church with. She ordered four dozen. From there, they quickly set up an Instagram page (@nookiescookeville) and were soon up every night making sweet treats. It helped that Cookeville was passionate about supporting local business, so the community was ready to rally around this new venture.

Since launching in August of 2019, the couple has worked tirelessly to build their business and make it through their first holiday season. They had tons of orders pouring in between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and they also decided to do a Valentine’s day special. Not only did they introduce fun flavors like chocolate covered strawberry and raspberry cheesecake, they also decided to make them heart-shaped!

Even with their expenses, they still ended up rounding off their first year with about $3,000 in profit. They’re now averaging around $1,500 each month from Nookies. Courtney and Lindsey could not be more excited for the future of their business. They’re now reinvesting in some equipment to keep the ovens running without working themselves as hard. It all keeps getting sweeter every month!

CLASSROOM: The 6 Factors of Persuasion, Part II

What It’s About

Part 2 on how to get people to listen and respond the way you want them to.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1206

In recent Classroom episodes, we’ve looked at choosing your idea, how to convert that idea into a product or service, how to determine what’s essential, and so on.

Last week we started our conversation regarding persuasion talking about the first 3 parts; authority, commitment and consistency, and social proof. In today’s episode we’ll focus on the final 3 parts of persuasion; liking, reciprocity, and scarcity.

Remember: If you can learn some basic psychological principles of selling… understanding why people make purchasing decisions, it’s something you can apply over and over for the rest of your side hustling journey.

It’s a lot like learning some basic tech skills. You don’t need to be a programmer, but if you can learn your way around WordPress and how to set up an email campaign, etc. – you’ll have a major advantage over the previous version of yourself that didn’t know those things.

Think of it as Minimum Viable Knowledge, or high-impact knowledge. A little knowledge goes a long way.

And yes I did say selling! It’s okay to do that, after all. Sometimes I worry I’m too soft … it’s okay to make money. I want you to be able to sell your products and services, present your offers with confidence. Because, after all, if you’ve made something that can help people, you’re doing them a disservice if you don’t try to get it to them.

Avid Baseball Fan Hits Home Run With Subscription Box

What It’s About

Root, root, root for this baseball themed subscription box.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Josh says, If you want something to be your full-time job, make it your full-time job. That doesn’t mean quit your current job…it just means sit in front of your computer and do the work.. We agree!

Fun Fact

Side hustle opportunities can present themselves by combining the old with the new. In this case, presenting the new billion-dollar distribution channel of subscription boxes to the millions of baseball fans worldwide.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1205
When Josh Band was a kid, he set himself the goal of playing professional baseball. He believed in betting against the odds, but he knew the chances of getting into the major leagues were pretty low. There are thousands of hopefuls who want to make it—but only a select few can grace the dugout of Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park.

So, Josh figured he needed a backup plan… and selling products online seemed to fit, well, like a glove.

Back in 2015, the subscription box craze was taking off. These are the boxes where you pay a monthly fee and in exchange receive a bunch of swag and products. The fad started with cosmetics, but Josh noticed it spreading to other niches as well. He began to wonder, why wasn’t there a subscription box for baseball lovers like him?

He decided that since there wasn’t one, he could be the guy to step up to the plate and make it happen. He already had the perfect name: Plate Crate – a monthly box of baseball gear and greatness.

He set aside two thousand dollars with the goal of making this dream a reality. In fact, he was so committed to hitting a grand-slam that he was willing to go all-in from the beginning… not our normal procedure or recommendation!

To start, Josh had to find enough baseball-related products to satisfy his customers every month. He went straight to wholesalers and tried to bargain for the best prices. But that was hard to do without volume, which he didn’t yet have. Luckily though, he was about to arrive at second base.

In his first month after launching Josh had twenty customers. A successful start, but not enough to bring in the relief team. Those twenty customers brought in around one thousand dollars a month in revenue which Josh fast-balled backed into influencer ads … to reach more baseball lovers.

After more time, hours, and extra innings, the momentum started to shift. Josh felt like he was getting close to the playoffs. Revenue kept increasing and he’d nabbed discounts on several products. He also began ordering gear direct from China that was branded as Plate Crate—a huge move in making his subscription box more official.

In fact, in terms of side hustles, Plate Crate has become a heavy hitter. Josh’s business generated over nine hundred thousand dollars in revenue in 2019. While there’s plenty left over for him to go full time and he has given away most of his other jobs, he does continue to personal train a couple of days a week, mostly because he enjoys it.

He didn’t make it as a professional baseball player, but his side hustle game is ready for the major leagues.

Q&A: How do I maintain a pandemic boost in business?

What It’s About

Not all businesses are hurting during these strange times. What should a listener do to keep the boost in their business going?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1204

Call it the Corona bump or the pandemic boost! While many businesses are struggling, some are doing better than ever.

  • – Zoom went from 10M users to 200M
  • – Delivery apps are thriving
  • – Liquor stores are doing a brisk business

Those are just a few examples. Today’s caller is in the unique situation of seeing greatly increased demand for her online art classes. She’s worried about what will happen when life goes back to normal.

“I started a side hustle a couple of years ago teaching art classes once a week at a local community center. Now, since the pandemic has hit, I have retooled that into twice daily art classes online. And this is going very well. I would like to be able to continue doing very well with my side hustle.

But once the pandemic is over, I imagine people will be going back to their once a week art classes. So how do I retool this or re-imagine this concept so that I can keep doing it after the pandemic is over? Or do I need to scrap it and go back to something different.”

Q&A: Should I start a hustle with my best friend?

What It’s About

A listener is thinking about a side hustle with a best friend. What should they know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1203

This question comes up a lot: Should I start a hustle with my best friend?

“We get along great … should we start a side hustle together?” It’s a common question from listeners, but there’s a clear way to answer it. Here’s a two-part test you can take to know whether partnership or going solo is your best option.

“Here’s my question for you. Should I start a hustle with my best friend? I’ve heard some of the stories you’ve shared where people end up having big falling out with their business partners. I don’t think that would happen to us. But are there specific ways that we can help to prevent that? Keep up the great work. And I look forward to hearing your thoughts about this. ”

Q&A: Why bother with Amazon’s affiliate program?

What It’s About

A listener wants to know if it’s worth it to join Amazon’s affiliate program.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1201

Today’s listener is wondering about Amazon.com’s affiliate program. I’ve talked about why everyone should sign up for it (sadly there’s no referral bonus, this is just for your benefit…) but what’s the point if people already shop there?

Very good question! And it just so happens that there is a good answer, at least if you have any sort of website or online presence and might at some point link to one of the 600 million items that are sold through the world’s largest retailer.

Also – what are people buying through my links? An interesting exploration.

“I’m wondering about Amazon affiliate links? You mentioned that we could all sign up to become an Amazon affiliate… but what’s the point? Why would anyone use my link to buy something instead of just going directly to Amazon.com? I’m pretty sure Amazon gets more traffic than I do on my Pinterest account. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.”
