Q&A: Is there a better way to do local restaurant delivery?

What It’s About

As food delivery service has grown exponentially, a listener wonders if there’s room for improvement.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1448

This year I’ve been spending a lot of money with Door Dash, Uber Eats, Caviar, and other services that bring food to my door.

I’m not the only one, of course. Advancements in tech combined with pandemic life have created a booming business in the world of food delivery.

Just like so many other things, some restaurants have adapted very well to this, and others have struggled.

Even though a lot of the time everything works as it should, I do encounter problems with delivery … and maybe you do, too. One time my driver delivered the food to someone else in another building. Another time I got someone else’s food.

Our caller today is wondering, “Is there a better way to do local restaurant delivery?”

“Hi Chris, this is Elizabeth from Fort Collins and I just recently found your show through a friend. Thanks for all the helpful content. Ever since the world changed in March, we’ve been ordering a lot more food delivery. In some ways, it’s great to get Chipotle or my favorite Vietnamese place brought straight to the door. About a third of the time, though, something goes wrong. We can’t find the driver, or an item is missing from the order, or it takes way too long.

There has to be a better way to do this, right? I don’t want to compete with Uber, I’d just like to do something like this in my own town, and preferably without being the one who drives around all day. Any ideas?”

TBT: 3D Printing Enables Distance Learning Materials

What It’s About

An update on a project that helps kids with STEM learning, featuring a major pivot due to COVID-19.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1447

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from something quite different: a pediatrician who starts an educational product brand built on 3D printing with cardboard. It’s a fascinating project to begin with—it’s all about helping kids with STEM learning through hands-on materials—and also a family business that she operates with her kids.

Of particular relevance to this point in time is her story of adjusting to COVID life. 3DuxDesign has had to completely pivot their approach since before they were trying to work mostly with school systems, and now with remote learning they’re trying to reach more parents directly.

Listen to today’s episode to hear Marci’s updates…

Q&A: How to quickly get to market with a distance learning guide?

What It’s About

A listener wants to create a guide on distance learning. What should they know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1446

Today’s caller is developing a guide to help parents and teachers with distance learning. Funny enough, millions of people are all learning (or not learning) how to learn when you’re not in a classroom.

Don’t you wish you had bought stock in Zoom a year ago?

This is a major challenge for most of those people, including the teachers, parents, and of course the students.

Our caller hopes to make it a bit easier by sharing tips and tricks and best practices. How can they get this guide to market quickly?

“Hey Chris, this is Cody from Salt Lake and I just started listening to the show earlier this year and have really enjoyed the content.I’m an educator and have recently been outlining a distance learning guide to help all the parents and teachers who are still adjusting to the world of Zoom education. Everyone is frustrated about it, and it’s not easy, but there are some things you can do to make it a little better.

I wish I’d started this six months ago, but I’m not sure we knew back then how long this would last. What’s the best path to get to market quickly? What decisions do I need to make?”

Financial Planner Moonlights as Trivia Host

What It’s About

A new financial planner gets paid to ask questions.

Words of Wisdom

Todd still believes that someone can follow his shoes to launch a similar hustle, “now is going to be a challenging time to walk this path as bars/restaurants are closing or restricted with what they can do. However, these types of weekly trivia shows happen at bars/restaurants all across the US, so I would highly encourage someone to check it out for themselves!”

Fun Fact

Trivia nights in bars and restaurants originated in the United Kingdom during the 1970s, and what started as a fun way to bring in customers on slow nights, quickly became a sensation.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1445
In 2008 Todd Bryant was 22, fresh out of college and just starting a career in financial planning. It was a terrible time to get into finance. The Global Financial Crisis had just hit and people were being ultra frugal—looking to tighten their purse strings, not open them.

Todd had a friend, a successful financial planner, he often turned to for advice. One night, while chatting, this friend abruptly ended the conversation and said he had to run. Turns out, this successful business owner was moonlighting as a trivia host in a local bar.

Puzzled, Todd asked why, if he was already successful, would he bother working an extra job. His friend’s response was that it was fun, it paid well and was a great source of new business leads. Todd was intrigued, and followed his friend to the pub, asking questions along the way.

Turns out there are large national trivia companies who franchise their model to local hosts. Todd asked for a referral, got it, and within a few weeks had his first gig. He was in hot trivial pursuit of extra income.

The company provided all the equipment, materials and questions. All Todd had to do was show up at the bar and run the event. In exchange he’d receive one hundred dollars cash for his efforts. Todd was hooked! Besides being a good-paying gig for a couple of hours, it was a load of fun.

That is, until COVID-19 hit and bars, clubs and venues everywhere shut down. That put Todd’s revenue at a standstill earlier in 2020. However, in the last few months things have started turning around. Several venues are opening up in COVID safe ways and Todd’s trivia business has returned to the same levels as before.

Sometimes all you have to do is ask the right questions.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • When Todd’s not coordinating trivia hosts, you can find him at his main hustle as a financial planner.

CLASSROOM: Revisiting Key Lessons (Part II)

What It’s About

As we near the end of 2020 (phew!), let’s look back at some key lessons from previous Classroom episodes.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1444

Today and two weeks ago, I thought we’d do a bit of a reflection on the year known as 2020. I don’t mean the year in general, but the Classroom series. My goal with this series was to complement the in-the-trenches stories with a number of more practical “go and do this” lessons for those who are just getting started.

We’re more than 1,400 episodes into the show now, and lots of people have joined in along the way. Others have come and gone, maybe focussing more or less on your side hustle depending on what else is going on your life. So when you need to do something specific, such as set up an affiliate program or review your offer before it goes out to everyone, or something else, you can get that info from this series.

So what have been a few highlights, first from my perspective but more importantly from the perspective of our listeners?

Graphic Designer Documents Remote Earnings

What It’s About

A graphic designer draws up a full-time nomadic lifestyle doing freelance work.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Kassandra shares the importance of ratings for freelance work, “Just with a single UpWork rating, I managed to go from applying for 50 jobs a week and getting no bites to applying for 50 jobs and getting one or two jobs from it.”

Fun Fact

UpWork has 12 million registered freelancers but perhaps more importantly, over five million employers looking for workers. It’s a great way to get your feet wet in the world of freelancing.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1443
Kassandra Marsh spent years studying graphic design in Australia. She enjoyed it and was excited to get out into the world, assuming she’d start a high flying job the moment she graduated. But, unbeknownst to her, there was no job waiting. Not for another long, arduous twelve months.

Until a job ad in the local newspaper caught her eye.

The ad described a job for someone with experience working with kids, along with an ability to design business documents. Kassandra, thinking it was such a curious mix of the two skills, applied straight away. After all, she was the ideal candidate!

Turns out, the job posting was an accident—the company erroneously placed a single ad for two jobs, instead of two ads for single jobs. Even so, Kassandra’s mix of skills surprised them and they agreed to hire her on a freelance basis. Her job would be to take their dull business documents, and redesign them so they were off the charts!

It wasn’t sustainable relying on only one client, so she set out to find more. To do that, she posted a profile on oDesk—which is now called UpWork—and promptly received … very little attention. Like zero divided by zero attention.

Kassandra modified the one variable she could: her prices. She gradually dropped her rate until she had someone employ her at the going price. It would mean working for peanuts but hopefully scoring a few prized reviews after nailing the job.

Eventually, she found an equilibrium, where she could charge the maximum amount possible yet still receive responses to her bids. Kassandra would often use a trick to ‘lever’ her pricing and schedule. When really busy, she’d price herself highly, to justify taking on additional work. When things were a little slower, she would drop her prices to drum up interest.

Between the website and her UpWork client stream there’s no shortage of gigs available to Kassandra. She now earns over twenty-six thousand US dollars per year, all while living remotely.

Q&A: How can I negotiate a revenue share percentage?

What It’s About

A listener wants to partner with someone to publish an online course. How can they negotiate a fair revenue share?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1442

Today’s listener has a unique question about course creation. If you’ve been listening for a while, you may have heard me talk about platforms such as Teachable, Skillshare, Udemy, and others.

Well, this listener wants to make courses that go on another platform: that of a small business that offers trainings, either to their employees or the general public.

She’s wondering about revenue share: how much should she expect to receive?

“Hey, Chris, this is Nicole from Washington, D.C. I’m calling with a question as a potential future course creator. I’d like to make some courses to leverage my professional experience. As an alternative to a platform like Teachable or Udemy, I would like to partner with a small business that already hosts similar trainings in order to sell the course. If I find a partner who’s interested in adding my content to their course library, what should I suggest in terms of a profit-sharing agreement? I’d appreciate a sixty-five/thirty-five split, given that I’ll do all the work of creating the course as well as spearheading marketing efforts, however, my gut says that the business partner will push back, suggesting that they have all the leverage given their content distribution network. Any tips for negotiating and what seems like a fair starting point to you? Thanks for your help and for making such a wonderful and valuable resource for the community. Nicole. Thanks for your help and for making such a valuable resource for this community. “

Q&A: Should I copyright my sex positive apparel ideas?

What It’s About

Let’s talk about sex-positive apparel! A listener seeks advice on copyrighting and protecting her ideas.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1441

“Should I copyright my sex-positive apparel ideas?” Well … they aren’t mine, actually. I don’t have any sex-positive or apparel ideas!

But one of our listeners in Los Angeles does. She’s been working on a plan to sell novelty clothing featuring intelligent innuendos.

Once you start diving into an idea like this, you have three sets of decisions to make. You’ve got the creative process, the strategy, and logistics. Naturally, some decisions overlap these categories. In particular, our listener Alyssa is wondering about copyright and otherwise protecting the intellectual property of her designs.

“Hi, this is Alyssa Carol from Los Angeles, California, and I’ve been listening to the show nonstop for about three weeks since my fiancee and I decided to turn a running joke into a side hustle. We’re launching Ruffled Pages Apparel, which is novelty clothing and more from a group of sex-positive LGBTQ plus affirming feminist pun aficionados. Ruffled Pages Apparel is here to make a smile with our intelligent innuendos for all. Chris, my question is, should we copyright the images we’re using on our clothing and accessories?

We hired an artist to create the images which will accompany our humorous slogans on each clothing item. We’re paying the artist a small upfront fee and then a percentage of each sale for the items they’ve worked on. As the hiring entity, does our company even own the copyrights or do the copyrights belong to the artist? Is it worth the fifty-five dollars processing fee since we’re just starting out and we’re not even sure if we’ll have sales? Thanks for listening and thank you for all of your sage advice on this podcast. It’s helped me to realize that I really can fit something fun and hopefully profitable into my spare time.”

Q&A: How to profit from a distorted real estate market?

What It’s About

A listener wants to invest in real estate without buying rental properties.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1439

Historically, when people have talked about “passive income,” they’ve referred to the practice of buying rental properties.

What are some ways to profit in the real estate world without doing that?

We’ve looked at the subject from time to time, and today’s caller has a twist: considering the longterm effects of the global pandemic, might there be some new opportunities?

“Hi Chris, this is Kelly from Columbus and I’ve been listening to the show for a while now. Thanks for the helpful advice. When the pandemic started, real estate sales in my area slowed way down—but only for a month or two. They then started back up again, fueled by lower supply as more sellers kept their homes off the market. Now the overall market is way up, with housing prices at least 5-10% higher this year compared to the last. However, it’s a very lopsided, distorted market. No one wants to buy condos or small spaces. Everyone wants big spaces, further out of the city, and anything with a backyard. Is there a way to profit from these changes? “
