We’ve featured a couple of stories of people using the platform NextDoor, including Ep. 245: Man Sells $1,400 in Coffee to Neighbors with NextDoor App and Ep. 342: Environmental Scientist Starts A Cat-Only Pet-sitting Business.

NextDoor is not primarily designed as a platform for you to go crazy and sell a bunch of stuff. So if you want to sell there—and, crucially, if you have a product or service (coffee or catsitting…) that might work well there—what do you need to know?

“I’ve seen a lot of people selling Girl Scout Cookies and other fundraising goods on NextDoor. There are also a lot of one-off sales of people selling the same kinds of stuff they might sell at a yard sale or on Facebook. I’d like to use the app as a primary sales channel. I like the idea of selling locally and it seems like a good way to diversify from other channels. Do you think this will be an effective use of my time?”

Naa Ardua says that no matter what you do, time will pass. If you don’t start your side hustle, time will pass, and you will have accomplished nothing. But if you start that side hustle, it may take a few years to reach your goals. The time will still pass, but you will have created something to be proud of.

Fun Fact

After a classmate told her son he couldn’t dress up as Batman because Batman isn’t black, Naa Ardua decided to use her artistic skills to bring more positive representation of black culture to the public. She has now written and illustrated a children’s book for her son, who was happy to see himself as the hero of the story.

Episode 1991
In 2016, Naa Ardua Flohic was an American expat living in France with her husband and two children. As a legal secretary at an international patent law firm, Naa Ardua was a valuable employee to have on staff. Among other skills, she was fluent in both English and French.

But when Naa Ardua asked to take on more work in order to get a raise, the answer was no. So that door was closed. She knew at that moment that she needed to do something else. She could already do traditional drawing on paper, but she knew digital art was the future.

Naa Ardua began learning to draw on a computer using a free open-source graphics program called Inkscape. It was hard at first, but she practiced every night after she put her kids to bed. An hour of practice would soon flow into two as she gradually developed her skills by watching tutorials, taking lessons, and practicing.

She focused in creating digital art that celebrates the African American community. As her skills improved and she began creating drawings she liked, Naa Ardua posted them on Instagram. People started liking her drawings, so she posted more. After a few months, a man messaged her and wanted to buy a custom illustration of Michele Obama for his t-shirt business that was dedicated to multiculturalism.

But Naa Ardua didn’t know how to invoice the customer for the illustration. He suggested using Etsy, the well-known online seller’s marketplace for handmade and unique items. Using his suggestion, Naa Ardua opened her Etsy shop, created a listing for his custom illustration, and he bought it.

Paper Flo Designs was in business.

Naa Ardua opened her doors in 2017 and has now sold over 10,000 scalable vector graphics or SVG files … which are just digital drawings.

Startup costs were a grand total of $120, which included buying a tablet and the first course she took to learn the graphics program. In 2021 she earned over $24,000, which she hopes to double this year.

Big news: Naa Ardua left her day job in January of this year and now works on her side hustle full time. She’s still figuring out her future plans but is focused on growing traffic to her website and increasing sales.

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Neel Parekh [pah-rek] in Los Angeles. We first featured his business Maid This back on Episode #1452: Reddit Post Inspires Airbnb Cleaning Service.

The business grew to millions of dollars in revenue and much expansion. But what about his first $1,000—how did he make that happen, what did it feel like, and what did he learn?

Second, I didn’t charge enough money. It took me some time to understand that executive coaching shouldn’t come cheap. Now I’m ready for my second attempt. Aside from these two issues, which I think I’ve corrected, do you have any other advice for me?”

We talk a lot about the knowledge economy or selling information in terms of online courses and other digital products. There’s a reason for that: many of these courses and resources are very profitable!

It’s also a common path to go from being a Creator in a certain field to teaching people how to do something similar. It happens organically sometimes, not always strategically. But today we have a question about this—does the tail sometimes wag the dog? (That’s not quite how they put it, but basically they’re wondering: why “do the thing” in the first place? Do these course instructors earn more from the courses than they did in the actual field?)

“I’ve noticed that a lot of case studies tend to switch pretty quickly to making a course about the thing they did—as in, their product or service—instead of just continuing to do the thing. Is it the case that teaching is better than doing? I don’t mean to be overly skeptical but I wonder if their business was so good, why don’t they invest more time in that instead of pivoting so quickly?”

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Alli Hill. She’s the owner of FreelanceSpeak.com, a resource for aspiring copywriters and other freelancers. As you’ll hear, it’s now a six-figure business (congrats!) but of course, getting to that point has been a journey that included a few missteps.

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week, we heard from a full-time voiceover artist. Other features this year have included a land surveyor who changes careers when he discovers an accidental side hustle painting signs and murals. It’s now a full-time, six-figure business! (And of course, many more…)

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Cecilia Ebrahimi in Nashville, Tennessee. She does a lot of things. She’s a musician, a real estate agent, and she recently bought both a restaurant and something called a salt cave. In my desk drawer and pantry I have a selection of protein bars. There are so many these days. Some of my favorites are from Good Snacks and Vega as well as the classic Clif—but there are many, many more.

The listener we’ll feature in today’s Q&A is launching their own. It sounds incredible except for the taste, but they assure us they’re working on it.

What are their next steps to making their All-In Bar a protein-packed profitable creation?

“I’ve invented a new kind of protein snack I call the All-In Bar. It works for people with almost every dietary restriction, including gluten-free, vegan, and low-carb. As for how it tastes … well, that part is a work in progress. But I’m also thinking ahead! What are the steps to getting to market with my All-In Bar? How can I be on the shelves at Whole Foods one year from now?”

Data Scientist Profits from Viral Article

You remember March 2020. We all do. Just as the coronavirus pandemic began to surge around the world, Nicole Janeway Bills began publishing articles on Medium.

As a data scientist, she had a unique set of skills that were becoming increasingly valuable for a variety of fields. These articles featured both her detailed knowledge as well as her technical experience with programming languages like Python.

Then in August, she published a post about the Certified Data Management Practitioner Fundamentals Exam (CDMP). She called it “the best data certificate you’ve never heard of.” The reason CDMP is so great is that it’s an open book exam, centered around learning the concepts of data science, not just memorizing a bunch of facts. Not only that, but receiving this certificate bolsters the credibility of people who are new or old to the data management scene.

That post gained a wide readership, which got Nicole thinking about creating a community for anyone interested in her field. To begin, she started two Facebook groups. One is focused on helping those who are studying for the CDMP exam, and the other is a more general group for people who are looking to break into data science.

As those groups began to gain traction, Nicole added others on Linkedin and Meetup. She had cultivated both her own community and a captive audience for her writing.

With this much engagement, she figured that there would be a market for online courses. She had more knowledge to share, and wanted to do it in a structured manner. All of the other work was free, so it would be nice to get paid. Not only that, but she had already built a whole network of potential buyers. By blogging consistently for over six months, she’d established her authority in the field.

After a few months of research, Nicole learned how to sell a course through email using a system called Sendinblue. She launched it in February of 2021. In the first month, she made $172. Business picked up from there.

In terms of profit margin, this is a very good business. Payment services like Stripe and PayPal take just 3% of the revenue from each sale, which means that Nicole gets to keep 97% of the profits.

What she’s doing seems to be working—because her profits keep growing! In January of this year, DataStrategyPros.com had its biggest month of profits yet, at $1,500. This occurred after Nicole launched a new product, called the CDMP Fundamentals Notes.

Because one side hustle isn’t enough, next she’s experimenting with creating mobile apps centered around wellness.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.
