“You can enter and disrupt an industry you don't know much about — start by asking people what their problem is.”
In this week's Throwback Thursday segment, we hear from Jen Glantz, also known as Bridesmaid for Hire — one of our most popular episodes in year one. She started after all her friends got married and she noticed that in a billion-dollar industry, no one's job was to be there for the bride. So she became a professional bridesmaid: personal assistant, on-call therapist, social director, and peacekeeper.
Since then, her company has grown to serve brides, bridesmaids, and maids of honor — including speech writing and coaching. But she also learned to simplify: she evaluated all her packages and cut them down to a core three, serving two specific clients.
Over 40,000 people have applied to work for her. Since she can't hire them all, she created an online course teaching people to start their own businesses in the wedding industry. She also launched a spin-off, Finally the Bride, around her own engagement.
Her biggest lesson is one many solo founders face: letting go. After five years, she finally started hiring people to help — realizing a one-person show can't be as powerful as it could be. And her advice: you can disrupt an industry you've never worked in. Just start asking people about their problems.
