Marketing Analyst Serves Up Gluten-Free Profit

What It’s About

Seeing a lack of good tasting gluten-free food, this blogger creates and shares her own recipes.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Addison shares a fun life pro-tip: “Life is too short. Never quit your daydream!”

Fun Fact

Addison is not only a health-conscious, gluten-free chef. She’s also a former Division 1 soccer star, which she says is by far the most challenging and fulfilling experience of her life. Apparently, she doesn’t have an off switch because she’s also completed two full marathons as well!

Notes from Chris

Episode 1821
Many of us can’t imagine a life without bread, pasta, and pizza. The majority of eaters out there don’t consider gluten-free as a viable option.

Adding to the challenge, many alternative recipes get a bad reputation as being a poor substitute for foods we love. Enter Addison Labonte—today’s featured side hustler–who decided it was time to make gluten-free cooking approachable, fun, and most importantly, delicious, for everyday home cooks.

A marketing analyst by day, in 2018 Addison had the idea to start an online food photography and recipe blog. A few years earlier, she had gone gluten-free to address some medical issues. As she got used to her new diet, friends and family enjoyed her reports on what she was whipping up in the kitchen. Presto! The ingredients for a food focused blog began to blend together.

Though she was confident in her abilities to cook healthy and delicious recipes, Addison admits to not being computer savvy. She could write recipes, but didn’t know where to start to get her content online. So, she hired an agency to set up her blog, which she called Organically Addison.

To build her audience, social media (mostly Instagram) became her gluten-free bread and butter. And to grow that audience, Addison put on her analyst hat—because that’s what she does for her day job. Rather than just “try everything,” Addison choose to measure what worked and what didn’t.

How did it work out? Well, by consistently posting eye-catching photos and a new weekly recipe, Addison’s blog viewership grew and she was able to monetize it within the first year of launch. Through just a few different advertising channels, she’s taken an initial investment of $1,000 and turned it into a recurring $5,000 a month business.

As for what’s next, she’s content with keeping her main job while working on her blog. She loves the balance and benefits she gets from doing both. In a way, it’s like having your gluten-free cake and eating it too.

Plant-Based Lebanese Food Goes Online

What It’s About

When faced with food related health issues, this hustler cooks vegan recipes from her heritage.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Janelle has learned a lot about being vegan during her journey, “There is a lot of ignorance when it comes to a vegan diet. Many still don’t understand it and think it is unnatural to eat this way, when in fact plants are nutrient packed and can provide you with all that you need and still taste amazing.”

Fun Fact

The global vegan food market size was valued at USD 12.69 billion in 2018 and is projected to expand at a CAGR of 9.6% from 2019 to 2025. [Source]

Notes from Chris

Episode 1779
Janelle Hamawi rolled her eyes when a young family member told her that he was trying vegan food. She had no idea at the time that she’d end up trying it herself because of health issues. Not just trying but loving plant-based cuisine so much that she started converting traditional Lebanese recipes to plant-based versions.

But let’s go back a bit. Janelle was born in Sydney, Australia. Her family is originally from Lebanon. She grew up consuming heavy doses of meaty dishes, but tried being more plant-based in response to her health changes.

The new diet helped reduce chronic fatigue, hair loss, brain fog, tinnitus, and more. It helped that she liked to cook, so she began collecting and creating delicious recipes. For example, her vegan shawarma is a vibrant feast of cooked mushrooms, fresh vegetables, pickles, and garlic sauce. She’s even made some gluten free vegan recipes, including Stuffed Peppers and Persimmon Chocolate Pudding.

With the desire to share her newfound passion, she started posting these recipes to Instagram in September 2018. The concept of scrumptious yet nutritious cuisine was appetizing to many people. Her visitors kept returning for seconds. Over time, she nurtured her hobby into a side hustle. With an initial investment of less than $400, she made a blog a year after starting the Instagram posts and moved to a full website three months later.

The project is called Plant Based Folk. It earns a monthly income of $1,500, mostly from advertising. Janelle uses the attention on her Instagram account to attract visitors to her blog. She’s also nurtured a mailing list because she knows social networks are fickle. She entices new subscribers with a free eBook of 10 recipes, early access to new recipes, and more.

Janelle plans to share her nutritious and spicy vegan recipes in an upcoming cookbook of Lebanese plant-based dishes. Furthermore, she is expanding her flavor profile by exploring the cooking and eating culture of her husband, a second generation Armenian. Her inner chef and vegan convert are just getting started as she gets paid to share recipes.

Cheese Connoisseur Makes Legen-dairy Creations

What It’s About

A remote worker’s gift turns into an unexpected business. You won’t get board with this story!

Words of Wisdom

When it comes to starting a side hustle, Monisha encourages people to not get swept up in what other people are doing. “Protect your brand. It’s easy to get really caught up when you’re new. Trust your gut and do what’s best for your business.”

Fun Fact

The word charcuterie is derived from the French words “char” which means “flesh” and “cuit” which means “cooked.”

SOURCE: https://corkdining.com/fine-dining/the-history-of-charcuterie-boards-and-why-you-should-drink-wine-them/

Notes from Chris

Episode 1655
Monisha Misra loves charcuterie and cheese boards. The delicious and aesthetically pleasing displays of crackers, cheese, cured meats, fruits and spreads are hard not to like, and in college Monisha and her friends began to make them for fun. Creating platters quickly became their go-to thing when guests came to visit.

Ten years later, Monisha’s college days were behind her and she was living in Boston while working in software sales. She still loved making charcuterie platters for evenings with friends, but those gatherings were about to halt. It was March 2020, and she had recently been sent home from work due to a mysterious virus.

Monisha watched from home as her friends, family members and countless strangers in healthcare worked 12-15 hour shifts trying to keep the pandemic under control. She felt lazy sitting around in her sweatpants, all while knowing so many people were working to manage the emerging crisis.

Monisha realized that after those long days, a charcuterie board or cheese platter would be the perfect way to recharge. So she contacted with a doctor friend to drop off her speciality creations to the hospital staff—all for free.

Monisha loved giving the boards away for free, and hadn’t even thought about selling them—but she decided to give it a try, starting with selling one to a friend for Mother’s Day.

She created an Instagram account called @BoardsbyMo, and planned a launch at the end of May. In her words, she had no direction, no strategy and no supplies. Instead, she began to post, tag, and hashtag to get her product in front of as many eyes as she could.

Then, she set up a website, BoardsbyMo.com. She wanted to make sure that her website was 100% ecommerce, since she didn’t have a lot of time to manage emails or write blog posts. All you could do was look at pretty pictures of food platters … and make a purchase.

Not only that, but in August 2020, she decided to add a new component to her business: online courses. Whoa, how did we go from food sales to online courses? Now on month six of the pandemic, people were craving new, safe ways to have experiences with their friends—and what better way to do that than with a charcuterie building class?

The virtual classes were a huge hit. Monisha is making about $14,00 worth of sales each month, with a 44% profit margin. Her Instagram account now has 46,000 followers and is constantly growing—she’s even partnered with companies like GrubHub and TjMaxx.

For now, the day job continues, but at some point she hopes to franchise BoardsbyMo and do it full-time.

“Side Hustle Bread” Insta Account Sells $100,000

What It’s About

A family bakes bread together during the pandemic leading to big dough.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

As a Hollywood Producer, side hustling baker, and Dad, Jim know’s a little something about time management. Jim shares some important advice, “start slow and never underestimate the amount of time you will have to put in. You better love what you are doing, because it may take a long time to figure out a plan that works for you and your business.”

Fun Fact

Having fun is at the heart of the Serpicos’ baking process. Jim and his family have been known to hide GoPros in their home to catch family members freaking out over a failed batch of sourdough.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1646
For TV and film producer Jim Serpico, baking bread had always been a hobby that he and his family took seriously. Growing up, he spent most of his weekends cooking with his parents, both of whom made it a point to involve him in their Sunday rituals of making rigatoni and bolognese.

Jim loved this and made a habit of cooking over the weekends, but headed down his own path of baking the perfect bread over time. That bread became a staple at every social gathering. A Serpico family tradition of baking on the weekends soon began.

As they baked more and more, the family joked that they should start selling their goods, and created an Instagram account called Side Hustle Bread (@sidehustlebread) just for laughs.

What they didn’t expect was that within a week, they would start receiving direct messages from strangers asking if they could order some of the bread. Out of curiosity, they fulfilled these orders thinking that they were one-offs, but found that the orders didn’t stop but were instead growing. Little did they know, this would be the start of a thriving family business.

It helped as well that the family baked artisanal bread and tried flavors that you couldn’t find in normal bakeries. This naturally led many people to be curious, which also helped with the popularity of their Instagram stories and posts. Within three months, they had built a loyal following, and today they have over 2,500 followers on Instagram. (Side note: hundreds of orders every week from a relatively small following. Engagement is everything!)

The family has been rewarded financially as well, with Side Hustle Bread grossing over $100,000 in sales last year. He’s now shopping a television pilot about his experience selling bread in the time of COVID.

Food Scientist Cooks Up Juicy Profits

What It’s About

A doctoral student get’s paid to write about cake and eat it too.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Bryan urges other freelance writers: “Be willing to charge more. Your time is precious and if you have additional expertise, that’s valuable too … It’s easy to see writing as a commodity, but ultimately you’re offering an expression of your thoughts and words to your client.” Just some food for thought.

Fun Fact

Bryan has eaten chicken feet, coagulated pork blood, and durian, the smelliest fruit in the world. Still, he draws the line at “piftie,” a savory gelatin dish from Romania that’s similar to French aspic. His wife’s family is Romanian, so they convinced him to try it.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1632
Back in 2011, Bryan Quoc Le got accepted to PhD programs in chemistry. But he wasn’t sure if the time was right. His father had passed away the year before, so he needed time to reflect and clear his head. He set out to walk across the country and figure out his next steps.

He ended up walking 2,000 miles from his alma mater, UC Irvine, to New Orleans, Louisiana in about six months. The walk was a sort of social experiment to see how far he could go based on the generosity of others. People would just drive by, leave him money, food, or water, and drive away. Through that experience, he found he liked talking to people from all walks of life, sharing stories with anyone he met, and writing about his journey online.

A few years later, Bryan got married and his wife turned him into a foodie. He also got really interested in how food and science intersect. So, in 2015, he started a PhD program in food science. That’s the study of the science and technology involved in creating food at scale. After an internship, though, he realized that he didn’t want to be an R&D scientist for a company. He also didn’t want to do academic research.

Bryan asked himself: what was the sweet spot between what he was good at, what he liked to do, and what the world needs? It turned out that a new path had been marinating this whole time. He had a friend who worked as a freelance journalist and he liked the idea that writing is portable—it was something he could take anywhere. Plus, he loved to tell stories.

Between 2018 and 2019, Bryan earned about $2,000. He wasn’t exactly rolling in dough, but he’d tasted the fruits of his labors and knew he could grow his earnings even more. After a year of writing, he created a portfolio website using JournoPortfolio to help him keep track of his writing samples. He kept writing for free for the association to position himself as an authority in that industry and eventually moved up to managing their blog, Science Meets Food.

Bryan is now earning $4,500/month consistently and projects that he’ll hit $6,000/month in June if all goes according to plan. In the next year or two, he hopes to earn $10,000/month on a consistent basis by adding subdisciplines with high demand, like food safety consulting and technical documentation for food manufacturers

He also plans to add additional revenue streams such as writing a second book and starting a podcast. One of the limitations of freelance writing is that it’s hard to really scale up earnings, because you’d have to raise your rates or complete more projects and there are only so many hours in a day, so adding those revenue streams is smart.

He’s also in talks with a food startup company to become its spokesperson and chief storyteller.

Episode 1419

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

It’s been a wild year with these segments. We’ve heard from a lot of people worldwide who have been expanding a coffee empire, raising a million dollars on Kickstarter for a new board game, going full-time with illustrations of houses, selling virtual paintbrushes for iPad artists—and of course, many of these adventures taking place under the overarching limitations of a global pandemic.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from a personal trainer who sells pumped-up pancakes full of protein. You could say she puts the pro in protein! They’re also profitable pancakes. She’s proud of them, and passionate about them, and also a very personable individual.

Sales Rep Seasons the Day with “Bad Spanish Tacos”

What It’s About

We’re spilling the beans on this taco pop-up concept.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Looking to start a similar hustle? Billy has the following advice; “Immersion is key. If you wanna sell tacos, it needs to be your life. Get to know the people who eat like you and like what you like. Avoid people who don’t get it and think it’s just a product. You better love what makes you hungry or you’re just chasing money.”

Fun Fact

Americans eat A LOT of tacos. This delicious Mexican treat first came to America in the early 1900’s when Mexicans started to move to the USA en masse. Today, estimates have the number of tacos eaten at 4.5 billion per year.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1081
It took Billy Flores a long time to discover his passion in life. All he knew was that he wasn’t finding it at his day job working in sales for a huge beverage company. Still, he believed it’s best to be grateful for what you have, so he never complained. He was a husband and father so, while the job wasn’t fulfilling, it provided a place to live and put food on the table.

But that didn’t mean he couldn’t explore possibilities and look for fun outside that day job. And over the years, he spent a lot of time doing that through various hobbies and hustles.

The one that appealed to him the most was cooking. He loved it! It helped that he liked eating. Best of all, he could indulge in his favorite activity up to three times a day.

He put particular effort into his work lunches. Far from the standard sandwich, Billy often brought himself smoked brisket or ribs. His co-workers would salivate over his food and started requesting he bring in extra to share, which he was happy to do. He soon became a regular Gordon Ramsay at his workplace, their own celebrity chef.

He used the lunches as an opportunity to try new flavors, seasonings, herbs and spices. He’d debut new recipes and see what worked and what didn’t. After a while, he started receiving requests to prepare meals for personal parties and functions. And of course, they paid him for the privilege.

The real benefit, though, was that Billy felt his love for cooking bubbling over. So much so that he decided to take a second job working in a local restaurant, a BBQ joint! He says now that working there was a great experience.

Beyond learning more about cooking and preparing food, he was able to gain exposure to the restaurant industry. He realized you could do well by offering simple food, well made. He also saw first-hand the value of hard work. Success in the food biz came to those who hustled.

As the months went by, Billy kept learning more until eventually he had the opportunity to impress his extended family in his own home. They asked him to make some tacos with a new tortilla press he’d acquired.

They were dazzled by the flavors and encouraged him to have a red hot go at venturing out on his own… and he didn’t burrito around the bush. There and then he decided to start a taco side hustle.

To be clear, he didn’t want to take the risk of opening a restaurant or building out a food truck. No, Billy envisioned that he’d first offer a pop-up taco store. The kind you see out the front of bars and clubs late at night. He could try his idea with minimal risk and expense. But, he needed permission to set up outside someone’s business, so that was the next step.

Luckily, Billy frequented a local brewery and was friendly with the staff. He convinced them to let him set up his shop on the sidewalk by promising that every patron in the place would be well fed if they wanted to be.

From then on, multiple nights a month Billy would be outside the local brewery slinging tacos to hungry beer drinkers all night, and loving every minute of it. As word spread and he improved the recipes, he realized he was doing too much.

Billy’s pop-up taco shop has kept growing. He is now making more than enough to afford him and his family a humble but enjoyable lifestyle which he is totally comfortable with.

For now, he enjoys the pop-up life. A bigger operation means a bigger kitchen, more money and thus more risk. While he isn’t sure if he’ll go down that path yet, for now he is just seasoning the moment.
