Words of Wisdom

Right out of the oven, Chelsea emphasizes the importance of being clear on what you want to do. After figuring that piece out, she suggests to get even more specific by focusing on a particular niche.

This eliminates a lot of the blind risk taking, and instead allows you to understand the likelihood of success in that area from the beginning.

Fun Fact

When Chelsea got her first client with her new brand, she knew she didn’t want to celebrate with anything too frivolous or expensive… so her and her husband popped a bottle of Prosecco and called it a day!

Notes from Chris

Episode 545

Back in 2010, Chelsea Cole was a student at the University of Oregon on the fast track to becoming an elementary school teacher. But a couple years in, the realities of the public school system started to sink in, and she was no longer certain that she wanted to work in traditional education.

That’s when she started to pay attention to the things she enjoyed to see if there were any viable alternatives. And the first thing that boiled to the top was her love of food and cooking.

You see, Chelsea had created a food blog called A Duck’s Oven (because U of O’s mascot is a duck) to document her adventures in cooking, and it was a way for her to unwind after a day spent cramming for tests. When she was in her kitchen, all of her worries and school concerns melted away like butter in a hot pan.

But up until she realized that a life of chalkboards wasn’t for her, cooking had just been a hobby. Now she was looking at it with fresh eyes.

Since she loved cooking so much, why not try her hand at cooking for others? Like many idealists before her, Chelsea’s first thought was to open a restaurant. While Eugene, Oregon was a nice college town, she had her sights set on Eugene’s foodie obsessed sister, Portland.

So in 2013, Chelsea packed her bags and set off to the land of hipsters, craft beer, and Blue Star Donuts. Not going into this half-baked, her new course of action was to get a job at a restaurant until she had learned the ropes enough to open her own. She was certain that she had found her destiny!

But just like Moses said when delivering the tablets of stone, just because there’s dough in the oven doesn’t mean it will become a biscuit…

Although she enjoyed the fast-paced environment of working in a restaurant, Chelsea quickly discovered that running one was far from being a piece of cake. So, back to the cutting board!

Since the majority of her audience had been fellow classmates, she thought about ways that she could cater directly to them and their needs. Chelsea knew from experience that many of them were living off of boxed mac n’ cheese and frozen pizza, so she decided to set her goal on helping them branch out from the frozen food aisle.

How exactly was she going to compete with the siren song of Hot Pockets? Well, to start, she’d create content and recipes that were simple and easy to put together.

Narrowing down the focus of her blog helped her grow her social media following to over 2,000 followers (on Instagram and Twitter), and these days, the blog is bringing in anywhere from $800-$1,200/month. Some of this cash comes from affiliate relationships, and Chelsea has also been able to make money helping other bloggers develop recipes and improve their social media.

These days, Chelsea is working hard to cook up passive income for herself—there might even be a cookbook in her future! She admits that idea still needs a bit more time in the oven, but she’s not loafing around—the blog remains a breadwinner!

Oh Snap! Photography Site Turns Into Passive Income Hustle

What It’s About

Lessons in affiliate sales on other platforms!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you’re having a hard time coming up with ideas, Ryan says that your first step should be to make a list of things you’re good at. He also said that it’s good to ask your friends and family because sometimes it’s hard to see what you’re good at because we can be so critical of ourselves. Then take these skills and traits and apply them to solve problems.

Fun Fact

In 2014, Ryan’s affiliate income was slashed by 90% because a single partner changed their affiliate program terms. Yikes! Be careful when building your business on someone else’s platform.

Notes from Chris

Episode 544

Ryan Oakley’s a man who loves his day job. He’s a traffic engineer, which means he helps set speed limits, build strategic crosswalks, and make intersections safer. But while he loves the steady income, he wanted a bit more—$1,000 more, to be precise.

He also had a hobby, one that is constantly evolving with all sorts of new technology coming out every year. That hobby is photography, and a few years ago, a new camera lens came out that Ryan was captivated by. The only thing was, there wasn’t an extra $1,000 in the family budget to splurge on a hobby.

So he found a way to make that extra $1,000.

Ryan had received some requests from other photographers about how he made his website, so he made a video tutorial for the program he used, SmugMug, and published it on his blog for anyone else to learn from. When he wrote the blog, he attached some affiliate links for people interested in buying the product. This was an afterthought because he really didn’t expect them to do anything. But if people visited and clicked through and made a purchase, he’d earn a commission.

Except, they did.

Ryan still remembers the rich satisfaction he felt when a complete stranger left a comment on the blog saying how grateful they were for his tutorial. He can also remember the satisfaction of that first affiliate sale.

Within a few months, Ryan’s video tutorial was ranking #1 on both Google and YouTube for a few popular search terms. His monthly affiliate earnings jumped to $500 a month, and $1,000—and they just kept growing!

Ryan quickly learned all he could about affiliate marketing. Clearly, it was something he should focus on.

A couple years and dozens of popular tutorials on photography business tools later, Ryan was making upwards of $10,000 per month in affiliate income—and nearly all of it was profit.

That is, until disaster struck.

SmugMug was altering its affiliate agreement significantly. Instead of allowing affiliates to take commissions from people already signed up for the free trial, the company would only pay out for 100% new leads.

This was a huge hit to Ryan’s income. Many of his readers were coming for help after they had signed up for the free trial and realized they needed help to get things going. Just like that, PhotographyOnTheSide.com’s income went from several thousand dollars per month… to several hundred.

These days, Ryan’s still creating video tutorials for tools and software that photographers use in their business. Most of his content still ranks high on Google and YouTube.

He admits he’s not done a great job with scaling his hustle since losing those big bonus paychecks. It’s always been an on-the-side thing for when he had time, and he imagines it’ll stay that way. He’s still looking to create new content every couple of months to keep his audience engaged, and he loves all the positive feedback he gets from viewers.

But the best part? “Gravy money”—that’s what Ryan calls his affiliate income. With very little hands-on work, Ryan is building an emergency fund for his family and helping his ex-wife pay for nursing school. It’s not $10,000/month anymore, but it’s still making a real difference.

Marriage Inspires Theatre Captioning App & Service

What It’s About

Husband and wife duo develop delightful, dubbed displays for the deaf and hard of hearing.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

It’s important to ask yourself how you’re going to make money from a side hustle idea right out of the gate. Otherwise, you get into the all-too-common situation of pursuing something that might create an improvement somewhere but isn’t really going to help you achieve your goal of a new source of income.

Fun Fact

In addition to being a developer and side hustler, Matthew is also in a band called Jump, Little Children—which is also how he met his wife. They took a 10-year hiatus, but they simply couldn’t stay away forever. They’re actually about to release a brand new album and go on tour this year!

Notes from Chris

Episode 543

When he’s not working as a developer, Matthew Bivins has been an actor and musician all his life. While on tour with his band one night in Chicago, his bassist came backstage and couldn’t stop raving about the “hot deaf girl” he had met at the merch booth.

This woman had been deaf since birth and was just beginning to learn American Sign Language in college. One of her assignments for class was to “sign sing,” and she had picked one of Matthew’s band’s songs to perform in front of her classmates. When she discovered that they were going to be playing a gig in Chicago, she figured she’d go.

Looking back, it seems almost like fate that Matthew met his wife for the first time that night, and the two were married a few years later.

As you might imagine, a performer and a deaf woman being married presented some problems when it came to recreational activities. Matthew loved watching theater, but his wife had never really experienced it—mainly because most theaters didn’t offer any sort of accessibility services.

Around mid-2015, Matthew came up with an idea that could revolutionize entertainment experiences for deaf and hard of hearing people: an app that can deliver captions to a person’s phone or tablet in real-time during shows.

Matthew calls this idea “closed captioning,” which is different from “open captioning”—where the captions are available on a big screen for everyone in the audience to see. His closed captioning idea would function a lot like the current caption tablets, but it would be far less expensive for the theater since the captions would go to phones owned by the patrons, rather than tablets that had to be purchased by the theater.

Matthew soon found himself booking 1-2 shows per month through his new side hustle, CaptionPoint, and he’s kept that momentum for a couple years. At first, he just charged $100 per show, but he quickly realized it wasn’t worth his time. Now he has a sliding scale from $350 to $600, depending on the theater size.

So by late 2017, CaptionPoint had become two distinct things. The first is CaptionPoint “The Service,” where Matthew or a contractor goes to shows and provides open captioning to audiences. The second is CaptionPoint “The Product,” which is the closed captioning app Matthew’s been working on this whole time.

In his own words, Matthew’s finally “cracked closed captioning” for theaters and is thrilled to start offering the service this Fall. He sees this app, not the service, as the long-term, scalable solution to captioning. He’s used that same website-based slides application he built a couple years ago to make viewing captions on personal screens a reality. He’s earning up to $1,000/month, but he wants to do more.

With that in mind, Matthew recently brought someone on-board who’s going to help him do real fundraising—this time with some real focus and strategy. With that extra money, he’s going to find more help to refine the app and start promoting the product to theaters nationwide.

Matthew’s excited about the monetary rewards of creating a much-needed product, but he’s very clear that the biggest reward is being able to enable people who are deaf or hard of hearing (and especially his wife) to enjoy theater the way he always has. In reading between the lines, he’s found a project that pays multiple dividends.

Graphic Designer Chalks Up Gripping Side Hustle

What It’s About

A graphic designer helps althetes get a grip!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

90% of Mario’s leads come from Instagram, and he works really hard to make sure that his customers know that they are talking to a human and not some bot or indifferent customer service rep. Mario says that putting in that additional little effort is the difference between a one-off sale and a life-long customer.

Fun Fact

Most of the chalk/limestone that’s around today was created almost 100 million years ago. This soft, white, porous, sedimentary rock occurs naturally deep under the sea where dead organic skeletons and shells accumulate to make limestone. Humans have been using it for various tasks for centuries, and it’s an extremely abundant mineral that is widely mined all over the world.

Notes from Chris

Episode 542

In 2013, an unfit and overweight Mario Parades walked into a Crossfit gym, and he never looked back. Inside the box gym, surrounded by the whoosh of the skipping ropes, the crash of the barbells, and the chants of “one more rep,” Mario found a community he forever wanted to be part of.

Over the next few years, Mario looked for ways he could use his graphic design skills to contribute more to the community. He started by creating t-shirts for gym owners, which were paid for by giving him free entry to the gyms. This venture also expanded into fundraising for charity, where Mario created a line of Crossfit-themed t-shirts to raise money for underprivileged children. One of which, the “Chalk Monster,” went on to sell out and raise hundreds of dollars.

Despite having a busy schedule and looking after his children, Mario was still determined to stay a part of the Crossfit community and bring value to as much of the community as possible. And, maybe earn a little money on the side.

Mario explored options to continue making t-shirts for gyms but quickly found out that Crossfit apparel was a highly competitive market, and new brands were popping up every day. He wanted something that was unique only he could offer. Then, one day, Mario had a conversation with a gym owner about the day-to-day running of a box gym, and how they’d run out of chalk and didn’t have any for the upcoming sessions. Later on that evening, while sipping a glass of Paleo wine, Mario was finally hit with the idea for his side hustle.

Chalk is one of the most overlooked parts of gym life, and probably the least exciting. It’s white powder, in a bucket, that’s used to keep your hands dry and improve your grip. Basically, a commodity. Mario wondered if he could be the person to make that product exciting and decided to take on the challenge. And, it didn’t take him long to come up with a name. He thought back to the “Chalk Monster” t-shirt that sold out and decided it would be a great name for his new brand.

Mario’s product is a subscription service for gym owners to help them keep a constant supply of this chalk. They order their chalk online and it’s delivered to their gym, at their chosen frequency. Mario says his business model is pretty simple because he found a problem, created a solution, and priced it attractively for your bootstrapped gym.

Mario’s total start-up costs for Chalk Monster came in at around $4,200. He’s already made that money back and has 50 monthly subscribers to gyms all around the USA. He’s also sold over 1,700 individual products to countries as far as Germany and to a U.S. military base in Iraq.

He’s made most of these sales thanks to Instagram marketing. The whole philosophy for Mario is “organic” and he tries to generate as much interest as possible without spending money on marketing. This means he spends up to 24 hours week using the platform to find gyms, comment on their posts and start building relationships. He can spend weeks chatting to the same person before he sends a message to them about being interested in his product. He wants to show he cares first, and then sell them second.

Looking to the future, Mario’s goal is to become a staple of the Crossfit community. He wants to reach out to more gyms across the country and begin to break into the European market as well. He’d also love to create a fulfillment center in Panama so he can give back to his homeland community, create jobs, and send his product to even more countries!

Chalk it up to another side hustle success!

Personal Trainer Pumps Up Breakfast with $25,000/Month Pancake Hustle

What It’s About

Pancakes that put the “pro” in “protein.”

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Ashley’s pancakes, fluffy and delicious though they were, would not have been able to sustain the momentum they had without her social media strategy, which included Facebook ads, Instagram hashtags, cross-promotions, contents, and influencers that help grow ABS Pancakes. Ashley found that reaching out to like-minded companies and asking to work on collaborations together was the best way to grow her audience and reach new customers.

Fun Fact

Protein is a major player and is the most plentiful substance in the human body after water. There are lots of different protein sources, like meat, eggs, nuts, vegetables, and… crickets? Yeah, seriously. Cricket flour has 5 times the protein of a serving of steak!

Notes from Chris

Episode 541

Healthy eating isn’t exactly sugar, spice, and everything nice. It’s kale, quinoa, and protein pancakes, too! At least that’s what Ashley Drummond, a personal trainer from Tampa, Florida, believes.

The full-time personal trainer spends her days hitting the ground, running—from client sessions to the gym for her own training, to more clients, to the grocery store, and back again, all while needing to stay on top of her food intake at the same time. For a lesser human, it would be absolutely exhausting, but breakfast, the notorious “meal of champions,” was her starting point…and in more ways than one, it was her best-kept secret!

Prior to launching the side hustle that is now a full-time business, Ashley spent the last seven years whipping people into tip-top shape as a personal trainer. She had always had a passion for helping people feel better about themselves as they reach their fitness goals, but she still felt a pull to add something else to her life. Something bigger. And something that would allow her to have a little more free time too…

But Ashley, a self-proclaimed foodie, just didn’t know where to start.

Now, something you should know about Ashley is that she firmly believes that you should be able to eat the foods you want every day without it having to be a “cheat meal.” And one of the things that she craved on a regular basis was pancakes. But the mixes available out there were full of less than fantastic ingredients, so she made her own version that was high protein, low carb, and incredibly tasty. She even bragged that she got her abs eating pancakes!

As she made her usual breakfast of protein pancakes one morning in 2014, she started to think about how she could combine her goals in the form of a side hustle. As she folded some chocolate chips into her pancake batter, she thought more about how to help people reach their fitness goals, without actually having to personally train them in the process.

With a steaming stack of pancakes on her plate, an idea suddenly popped into her head—the solution was right in front of her the whole time!

Protein pancake mix could be packaged, sold online, and made at home by other people. It was an easy way for Ashley to help others reach their goals without having to be in the gym with them. Of course, a few details would need to be whipped out, but it felt like a weight had been lifted. Ashley’s side hustle was quite literally in the pan!

In the four years since she began ABS Pancakes, Ashley’s been able to build a side hustle that brings in around $25,000 each month. That’s a lot of flapjacks!! She did require a heavy investment of $20,000 to produce her first run of inventory through her co-packer and build her Shopify website, but she was able to pay for that by saving her profits from the initial year of sales from her kitchen-made products, and a bit of credit card investment, too.

Looking back, Ashley says that her side hustle would have fallen flat had she not trusted her instincts. In her words, “in the end, only you know what’s best for your brand, so it’s important to take other people’s advice with a grain of salt… even if they’re successful entrepreneurs.” Above all, Ashley says that it’s the daily things she does that keep her moving forward. The small details, like invoicing, making phone calls, website maintenance, and regular social posts might feel boring sometimes, but like the grams of protein in her pancakes, each step adds up.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • ABS Pancakes: Get your abs eating pancakes—snag a bag (or two, or three…) of protein packed pancake mix over on Ashley’s website!
  • Shopify: Ashley used Shopify to set up her store for ABS Pancakes, and they’re offering a 21-day trial and exclusive discount for all Side Hustle School listeners!
  • ReCharge: The subscription platform that Ashley used to help manage ongoing customer subscriptions

Weekly Recap: World Domination Arrives in Portland, Oregon

Notes from Chris

Episode 540

THEMES & TAKEAWAYS:

In today’s recap, I want to tell you about two productivity tools that I’ve been using recently. One is an app, and the other is more of a resource or methodology.

  • Be Focused App – This app sets a timer that allows you to focus your time on a specific task. I use the pro version which is only $3 in the Apple iOS store and $5 for the desktop version. They also have a free version that you can check out before you take the plunge!
  • The Time Makeover Guide This second resource is more of a concept of tracking your time. Laura has done a lot of research on this, and her philosophy is that even if you’re busy, you have more time than you think. And furthermore, if you pay attention to how you spend your time, you can identify patterns, make adjustments, and spend more time focusing on the things that matter most to you. (Also, here’s a link to Laura’s book, 168 Hours!)

In today’s recap, we’ll delve more into both of these topics—tune in to learn more!

Moonlighting Makeup Artist Earns Extra $25,000/Year

What It’s About

A college student that puts the “blush” in “blushing bride.”

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Caitlyn wouldn’t be earning her extra $2,100 a month if she didn’t take a risk in launching her side hustle. She puts it succinctly when she says “if you can dream it, you can do it. So dive right in. Don’t wait until the moment is right because that moment doesn’t exist.” She knows firsthand that excuses can pile up, but Caitlyn also is a great example that starting somewhere (anywhere, really) will help the rest of the pieces fall into place.

Fun Fact

Makeup and cosmetics go way back. All the way back to early civilization, with the ancient Egyptians being among the first in recorded history to use makeup. Cleopatra allegedly soaked the sails of her ships in perfume so that people would be able to smell her arrival. How’s that for a signature scent?

Notes from Chris

Episode 539

28-year-old Caitlyn Tuzzolino didn’t act on her dream immediately. Upon graduating from college, she dove head first into the corporate world. Since then, she’s created and led marketing departments for an accounting firm, a software company, and an automated manufacturing company, where she helps raise brand awareness and drive sales.

Caitlyn was busy, but she still found herself wishing for more. She noticed that she increasingly started to begin sentences with “I wish…” Then she realized that it was time for her to stop wishing and just get to work.

What would she do? Well, she’d always been good at doing makeup. So good, in fact, that her friends would always enlist her to help them do their makeup, too. The former competitive dancer honed her skills in high school. Then in college, she was constantly asked to do her friends’ makeup before they would go out on the weekends. Every situation helped her see that she had a talent that people wished they had. It also made her realize that she could, and should, do something with it.

So a bit later, when she longed to do something more than just her corporate job, Makeup by Caitlyn Michelle, was born… or shall we say, made up.

Caitlyn knew that lots of weddings took place in her area of Rochester, New York, so that seemed like a good starting point for her side hustle.

She started practicing on anyone and everyone she knew. Friends, family, friends of friends, you name it… everyone except her dog. After practicing different types of makeup looks on different face shapes, she took photos so she could begin building a portfolio that she could then use to showcase her talent. She also began to take her portfolio to local hair salons to ask if they would be willing to refer her to their wedding parties. To her surprise, two salons agreed.

She now serves clients throughout New York State and books 20-30 weddings per year. Caitlyn balances her 40 hour work weeks with weekends spent on her side hustle, in the form of makeup trials, weddings, or events.

Since her first days of taking any and every client that came her way, Caitlyn has been able to build her skills and reputation and now requires a booking minimum of six people for a wedding day. After about one year of starting her side hustle, Caitlyn became booked for weddings almost every weekend of the year – and it’s been that way ever since. Not only is she able to make more money doing something she loves, she gets to help people feel confident as they celebrate a special day. And, to Caitlyn, that’s half the fun.

Caitlyn doesn’t know what the future holds for her or her side hustle, but she does know that she eventually wants to take her side hustle full-time within the next few years. And, in the meantime, she wants to continue to learn new skills like lash extensions, microblading, spray tans, and a lot of other things that I don’t know the first thing about. And that the only thing she’ll be winging is her eyeliner.

Children’s Book Author Turns Page to New Income

What It’s About

A mother makes a career out of telling children stories.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

If you want to teach others something, make sure that you have developed the necessary skill and experience first. Plus, building career capital gives you perspective and confidence that can help you stand out from the competition!

Fun Fact

Before Eevi started helping aspiring children’s book authors, she was creating and launching book trailers for USA Today bestselling authors like Nicholas Sansbury Smith, Debra Webb, and James Hankins. By all metrics, she had a thriving business. It was only when she realized that she couldn’t scale her business that she decide to pivot.

Notes from Chris

Episode 538

For work at home mom Eevi Jones, a career that was non-location dependent was of vital importance. With a military spouse, she never could stay in one place for too long, having moved 12 times over the past 19 years. Besides building Lego castles with her two boys during the day, Eevi was also a successful children’s book author who helped publishing houses launch book trailers for their bestselling authors.

By all measures, Eevi’s career was going well. With over a dozen children’s books published, Eevi had substantial experience authoring, illustrating, and marketing books in her niche. With her vast experience particularly in the illustration of books, she found herself booked out weeks or months in advance with great demand for her services. But at the beginning of 2017, she realized that work was catching up with her. Sometimes she would go to bed at 1 in the morning, and then be up at 5. She couldn’t spend time with her children or her husband, and she didn’t have time to write children’s books anymore. She found she was becoming a victim of success.

What do you do when you’re overwhelmed with work and business? You start another business, of course! A different kind of business.

Eevi’s friends had suggested that she could teach others how to launch a career as a children’s book author. With her vast experience and familiarity with the publishing industry, it was a natural change, and Eevi became convinced that this was a business which she was uniquely qualified to build.

To date, Eevi has managed to earn upwards of $1,500 a month from the combined revenue of her published book and coaching. The course is now becoming a reality.

She expects that her monthly income will grow as she scales her efforts and grows her platform – something she was never able to do in her previous business. The success of authors whom she has coached also gives her immense satisfaction that she didn’t have before.

Eevi attributes most of her success to having built up “career capital.” It’s a concept coined by University of Georgetown Professor Cal Newport, who says that mastery and the keys to a good career come from developing experience and expertise. Not only did Eevi publish a dozen children’s books before she started teaching this skill to others, she also made sure to continually refine her material by approaching the issue from a beginner’s perspective. It’s made a big difference in setting her apart from her competition.

Like Eevi, you too can write a new chapter in your business or side hustle. Just don’t be afraid to turn the page!

Brooklyn App Developer Spins All-Natural Cotton Candy

What It’s About

A sweet side hustle that’s as light as air!

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

One piece of advice that Alisha had for future side hustlers is to master the cold email and follow-up. So many of their successes started with a simple email that they sent to potential collaborators! They made sure to keep their emails short and sweet so that they could convey the value of their business without taking up too much of the other person’s time.

Fun Fact

Who introduced cotton candy to the world? A dentist—Dr. William Morrison of Nashville to be specific. In 1897, he and candy maker John C. Wharton invented a device that melted sugar and blew it through a fine screen to create “Fairy Floss.” He introduced it at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair and sold 68,000 boxes for 25¢ each ($6.75 in today’s money). Personally, I think it was a ploy to bring in more cavities…

Notes from Chris

Episode 537

Alisha Vimawala isn’t new to the world of side hustling. Not only is she a full-time product manager for Fueled, an app development agency in New York City, but she also has a successful dance-related YouTube Channel and a published children’s book. But her latest hustle is more colorful and flavorful than all the rest.

In late 2015, Alisha was hanging out with her friend and fellow YouTube side hustler, Margaret Taormina, when the two started playing with a toy cotton candy maker Margaret had received for Christmas. It didn’t take long for them to come up with an idea: all-natural cotton candy catering.

The rest of the holiday went by, but neither Alisha nor Margaret could get the idea out of their head. As soon as January slowed down, they started experimenting with flavors.

They began by ordering some sample materials online: pure herbal extracts, plant-based colors, and specialty sugars. It quickly became clear that, while it would be cheaper to use artificial flavoring, using the natural stuff led to a much higher quality product. [Plus, as a bonus, you wouldn’t die when you ate it.]

The cotton candy they made not only had a crisp and clear flavor, but its light and fluffy texture made each taste like taking a bite out of the sky—not sticky or gooey. Just a couple months into this initial R&D phase, Alisha and Margaret had their first four flavors: mint, citrus, lavender, and rose.

And then a call came. A close friend had access to an incredible opportunity: the Juilliard Annual Alumni Benefit. This was it. This was their chance to test their flavors, see if demand was really there, and get their name out there for the first time.

Alisha and Margaret are looking at opening up their own storefront for Not Your Average Cotton in New York City. They’re using a service called “PopShop” to find short-term pop-up opportunities while they look for investors. Despite the several equipment upgrades, event and regulatory fees, and all those all-natural ingredients, Not Your Average Cotton is profitable and debt-free. Let’s not sugarcoat it: starting a modern-day food product that plays on nostalgia is hardly taking candy from a baby, but the sweet reward is worth it.

Movie Industry Friends Rewrite the Credits, Earn $20,000/Month

What It’s About

Two friends streamline the act of giving credit where credit is due.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

There are all sorts of ways to make money. What is something in your industry that other people might never think of, but you know is a hassle or otherwise takes a lot of time? What could be a possible solution or just a substantial improvement to it?

Fun Fact

Although Endcrawl is a SaaS product with a login area for customers to use, we served about 100 indie films before we even rolled out our first UI. Over time we built out an api and automated more features but the core product is still very similar. Since then over 1,000 movies have used Endcrawl.com. Including movies like Moonlight and The Big Sick.

Notes from Chris

Episode 536

When it comes to business models, software has to be one of the most profitable. Huge companies like Microsoft make their billions by selling software to customers worldwide. But, is it possible to create a software business as a side hustle? Today we’re featuring a side hustle that proves it can be done.

Introducing Endcrawl, a software product built by John Eremic AKA “Pliny” and his co-founder Alan. Endcrawl is what’s known as a SaaS—software as a service—product. Unlike conventional software that might be installed on your computer, (like Windows or Excel). SaaS products run in the cloud, and customers pay a fee to use or access them.

Endcrawl serves a very specific purpose—t creates end credit sequences for movies. You know, the type you see scrolling along in black and white when you’re leaving the cinema. Where every person that had a hand in making the film gets their credit. Well, each of those names had to be added to a list, sent to a typographer then sent to a videographer who would compile and edit. The sequence then needs to be rendered for film so it can grace the silver screen.

Endcrawl completely automates that process using software, and aspiring and professional filmmakers the world over are paying for the privilege of using it. Let’s take a look at how this came to be.

It all started with a couple of drinks. The guys both worked in the film industry, and they had both brainstormed ideas in the past but never committed to anything. One night at a party, they committed to building a project together, solving a problem they’d long knew existed: the time consuming and painstaking task of creating end credits software.

Pliny and Alan threw $1,000 each at the project to get started. That would enable them to get a server and the tech required to run something like this, as well as cover any small expenses that might crop up.

Alan had a coding background and was able to whip up a very basic version of Endcrawl. When I say basic, I mean really basic. They had a programmed script that would run on their laptops, and customers would email them a spreadsheet that they’d feed into the script. It would automatically generate the credits and they’d send them back in 15 minutes. Even with the manual process, it was a big improvement, because this process used to take up to 24 hours using the old methods.

The customers loved it! The fact that it was a crude version and wasn’t automated didn’t matter much in the beginning. They were able to charge $500 a pop for each end credits sequence generated. Even with this super basic, and in their words ‘janky,’ proof of concept software, they served their first 100 customers using this system, for $50,000 in income.

Things have begun to ramp up over the last two years though. Now in 2018, Endcrawl is generating around $20,000/month. After expenses are factored in, this gets John and Alan very close to being able to quit their day jobs. Their plan is to double revenue over the next year while holding down their jobs, and if everything goes well look at dedicating the full-time commitment to Endcrawl. By then it will pay them both a livable wage.

So, it is possible to build a software-based business as a side hustle, but it isn’t simple. It can take time to build and the process is slow, methodical and not always certain. But Endcrawl proves it can be done.

From an idea conceived over a few drinks to a script running on one laptop to now generating end credits for films like Moonlight, Snowden, Lady Bird, and The Big Sick, Endcrawl’s days of crawling have dramatically sped up. In fact, they’re off and running!

Quote of the Day
"Early growth was 100% organic, but what we found is that as we progressed, growth got harder—not easier. There is this fallacy that as you grow, everything just starts flowing downhill.
