Failure Friday: “Offensive Greeting Cards” Lost in Post

What It’s About

A card company based in the UK struggles with an overseas supplier.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1973

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features James Brand from North Wales. He sells what he calls rude, offensive greeting cards and gift wrap. He also calls it an undiscovered, popular niche!

Now, as what tends to happen at this part of the story—it was all going so well. James had even gone full-time and began working with an overseas supplier.

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…

TBT: Mixed Media Artist Sews Up Side Earnings

What It’s About

An update from an artist creating one-of-a-kind handmade, sewn items.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1972

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Recently, we’ve featured a Boise woodworker, the founder of an ecommerce brand that sells gear for outdoor hockey, and a guy who leads pizza tours in Chicago. Last week, we heard from the founder of QD Foodie, a kitchen tool collection that makes cooking fun.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Roula Rallis, a New Hampshire fabric artist. She’s an IT manager by day working in an analytical field, and by night or weekend or other times she’s built her business Sewcialite, which sells all kinds of beautiful handmade, sewn items.

What’s happened in the past three years since we first told Roula’s story?

Q&A: “Is it ever too early to post on social media?”

What It’s About

Today’s caller wants to know when they should start building an audience.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1971

If you don’t have a product yet, should you even worry about social media? According to some people, yes! You should worry. You’re missing out. You’re too late.

Maybe, but that’s depressing. And if it were true, you can’t exactly change the past.

A better question is: what should you be doing right now?

Our listener today is wondering about how to balance the competing goals of “finish the product” and “start marketing it.” Let’s talk about it!

“I’ve put together a new project that I’m excited to share. I hope to make it a brand and a business, maybe even a book at some point. But I’m thinking of starting with Instagram to get the process going. Part of me thinks, okay, I should start right away—that’s what we always hear, right? Just start. But another part of me thinks it’s too early and I need to develop this more. Is it ever too early to post on social media and start attracting a following? I can’t tell if I’m tricking myself one way or another. What do you think?”

Charcuterie Boards Cure Couple’s Pandemic Woes

What It’s About

Couple creates custom cut charcuterie creations.

Words of Wisdom

Sandra says that if you’re a busy person looking to be successful, then “Look at your schedule and carve out chunks of time that you will commit to building your business around. It is a discipline that will take away from other pursuits. You really do have to give something up.” For them, they gave up watching T.V.”

Fun Fact

The den Boers are onto something. Charcuterie boards are a social media phenomenon. Don’t believe us? Check out this article.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1970
The pandemic brought about changes for many of us. In the United States, a lot of city dwellers left for rural settings. Executives accustomed to twelve-hour days in the office found themselves at home in their pajamas with more time on their hands. Meanwhile, healthcare workers became busier than they could have ever imagined.

For Harrie and Sandra den Boer, three significant changes converged during this time: quarantine, a knee injury, and the reality that they were now empty nesters. This trifecta of change didn’t bring them down. Instead, the couple saw this moment as an opportunity for transformation and decided to begin their long dreamed-of side hustle.

But sitting by and watching wasn’t their style; they pined for more action. So the crafty couple decided to use this abrupt change to shake things up a bit and pursue a long-time dream to turn Harrie’s woodworking hobby into a small family-run business. They called it Protea and Thistle Woodshop, a name as quaint as their surroundings.

Next, they bought something called a CNC and added it to the workshop shop. If you’re wondering, CNC stands for computer numerical control, a machine you program to make precise cuts, engravings, and more.

Then it was time to decide on a product. Sandra’s love of arranging charcuterie on boards influenced that decision. It seemed like a good match of both their interests.

The couple created their first batch of boards from a piece of local walnut. They titled them The Plymouth Collection, after their hometown. Each one-of-a-kind piece is named after a street in Plymouth. It wasn’t long before friends and family snapped those up.

They didn’t have a website, at least at first—instead, they made their Instagram page into a storefront and enlisted the help of their daughter, Pretoria. She shows their followers how to craft creative boards for various holidays, and they film mini-tutorials that demonstrate the boards’ versatility.

Despite this minimal approach to marketing, Protea and Thistle Woodshop brings in up to $2,000 each month, and the den Boers have continued to grow their business by adding new products.

First $1,000: “I couldn’t believe I got paid playing a game I loved…”

What It’s About

A dungeon master levels up and creates an online gaming marketplace.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1969

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Devon Chulick in San Francisco. We first featured him back on Episode #1690: Product Manager Starts “Airbnb for Dungeons and Dragons.”

The business grew to become a hub for contracted dungeon masters who produce tournaments for corporate events and other occasions. But when he started, it was just Devon and an idea!

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…

Q&A: “I’m trying to sell tickets to a Mexican version of Bingo…”

What It’s About

Today’s international caller wants to monetize a local game. Can they win with this idea?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1962

Today we have a caller from Mexico City!

She’s starting a semi-regular event which is basically the Mexican version of Bingo. Sounds like fun! I want to go… but first we need to help her get set up.

International callers, love to hear from you! You are 50% of the Side Hustle School audience, which is very cool. The podcast is available pretty much everywhere and I try to make most episodes non-U.S. centric.

“I’m starting a Lotería, which is basically like Mexican bingo but with colorful cards and lots of cultural references. It’s a lot of fun! To get people to my game, I need to advertise somehow, but tickets only cost $10 so there’s not a lot of money in it. How can I get local media to cover my mini-startup?”

Q&A: “I got a nasty email from my competitor…”

What It’s About

Today’s caller wonders how to handle an unfriendly email.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1962

Our listener got a mean email! Don’t you hate those?

The other day I got one and it ended up turning into a good experience.

This one is a little different, unfortunately. The competitor seems to think they’re the real inventor of the board game our listener is selling, even though our listener knows this isn’t true.

Should they listen to their competitor—does this complaint have merit? Either way, what should happen next?

“I sell a board game that got funded through Kickstarter backers. Ever since, I’ve received lots of nice emails … and also lots of strange ones. People I don’t know ask for advice, which isn’t bad, but sometimes they can be pushy.

Even worse, I got a nasty email from a competitor who put out a game four months after mine went on the market. They say I stole their idea, but my game was out first! Apparently they’d had some of the game’s mechanics detailed in a blog post that came out earlier, but I hadn’t seen it. I also didn’t know who they were until they wrote me.

Should I be worried about this? How should I respond?”

TBT: Adventurous Kitchen Tool Set Goes Global

What It’s About

An update from the creator of unique and charming kitchen tools.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1965

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Recently, we’ve featured the founder of Mozart for Munchkins. The group produces concerts and musical experiences for children of all ages in New York City, as well as a land surveyor who changes careers when he discovers an accidental side hustle painting signs and murals. It’s now a full-time, six-figure business!

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Marci Heit in Silver Spring Maryland. Marci does a lot! She runs an animation production company called “It’s Real Entertainment.” She’s also a professional voice actor. And in her spare time, she’s the founder of QD Foodie, a kitchen tool collection that makes cooking fun. (She notes that she doesn’t call it her side hustle but part of her overall business—that’s kind of like me.)

What’s happened since?

Q&A: “Why do people buy courses when YouTube is free?”

What It’s About

Today’s caller asks the question we’re all thinking — “if information is free, why are we paying for it?”

Notes from Chris

Episode 1964

Today’s question is deceptively simple: why do people buy courses when YouTube is free?

I want to encourage you to think about the answer as not just knowledge but potentially some brainstorming material for you and your ideas.

“It’s amazing what you can find on YouTube. Pretty much anything you want to learn about, there are experts producing high-quality training videos on YouTube … and all for free! If you want to learn a language, for example, you can pay for a tutor or language app, or you can just watch free videos. Even for pricey exercise equipment like Peloton, there are free alternative classes you can watch. These videos have hundreds of thousands of views, so clearly they’re popular. With so much available for free, why do people buy online courses? I want to make one of my own, but I have no idea how to compete with free.”
