“Keep refining your approach, keep reaching out to people and eventually you will find the formula that works.”
Ethan from Bozeman, Montana, calls his side hustle "the most meta one you've ever heard of." He brokers joint venture deals for podcasters, bloggers, and influencers. It started on his morning commute and at the gym, where he listened to show after show about entrepreneurs. He noticed a gap: these creators made great content, but most weren't monetizing their audiences.
Ethan knew the hustle depended on networking. He went to industry conferences and virtual meetups, and he liked and commented on every post he could. His break came at Podcast Movement, where he met a well-known podcaster whose show he already loved. They talked about the show first. Then Ethan pitched his idea. The podcaster had been looking for new ways to earn, but he was too busy making episodes to chase them.
After a few more conversations, they got to work. Ethan connected the podcast's audience with businesses that fit it. The companies offered special deals to listeners, and the podcaster earned a commission on every sale. It worked differently from sponsorship, so the podcaster kept running his regular ads. When the first deal went live, the podcaster had a new revenue stream, the company reached an engaged audience, and Ethan took a cut of the commission. That cut was his first $1,000.
Ethan's lessons: build real relationships, because every influencer has different needs and you have to be flexible. Understand your client's audience before you offer anything. And don't get discouraged if the first attempts don't go as planned. As I said at the end of the episode, not every idea will be amazing, but some will, and you won't know until you try.
