“Getting to that first $1,000 mark felt like reaching the summit of a mathematically precise mountain.”

In this week's First $1,000 segment, we hear from Aman in Mumbai, India. He's built a bustling business as an online math tutor for high school students in the U.S.

Aman started with one student who was struggling with Algebra. Through patience and steady adjustments—and no small amount of cross-cultural problem-solving—the student's grades improved, word spread, and referrals came in. He set up a simple website, charged $30/hour, and built a small roster from there.

It took around 33 hours of tutoring spread over a couple of months to reach that first $1,000. "It wasn't just the monetary gain; it was the confirmation that I was making a positive impact on these students' lives."

The biggest challenge: adapting his teaching approach to each student's individual learning style. His goals now include expanding to group sessions and pursuing certification as an international educator.
