How can you sell on a platform like Nextdoor? Nextdoor, this is a popular app, at least in the United States. I'm not sure if it is worldwide or not. There's probably some others. So if you're in a different region, there's probably some app that basically is designed for local communication with your neighbors, you know, with people on the same street, the same block, same town, going to the same school, et cetera.
It's not primarily designed as a platform for you to go crazy and sell a bunch of stuff on. It's not quite like Facebook Marketplace or many others. But we have actually over the years, featured a couple of stories of people using this platform to sell. One of them was episode 245, man sells $1,400 in coffee to neighbors with Nextdoor app. Then we had episode 342, environmental scientist starts a cat only pet sitting business, also on Nextdoor.
So it's not designed as this selling platform, but it can work in certain occasions. So today we're gonna hear from a listener. I believe this is Tara and she's wondering how can she actually use this platform to sell, whether it is, well, let's just hear from her. I'm not exactly sure what she's gonna sell. So let's hear her question.

Hi there, Chris.
This is Tara from San Diego and I've been following the show for a while. I've seen a lot of people selling Girl Scout cookies and other fundraising goods on Nextdoor. There are also a lot of one-off sales of people selling the same kinds of stuff they might sell at a yard sale or on Facebook. I'd like to use the app as a primary sales channel. I like the idea of selling locally and it seems like a good way to diversify from other channels.

I think things have changed a lot in the world of apps as they tend to do. And now there are a lot more resources for selling on a platform like Nextdoor.
I went to just look and there were a lot more features than when I first featured Nextdoor many years ago. So a lot of the tips are the same for selling anywhere else which is, first and foremost, good photos. Good photos make a huge difference when selling anything online. A detailed description clearly point out any flaws or defects. That's gonna actually help you.
It won't harm you, it will help you. People appreciate the disclosure. And then also with Nextdoor, you can also give away items for free. And that can actually help with building up a profile, some reviews and so on. And so in short, Nextdoor is starting to look a lot like Craigslist, Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace.
What is the other one? I don't know, there's so many of them, right? Other platforms that allow you to sell directly to your neighbors. It's just that Nextdoor is focused hyper-locally and very close by. So pickup and delivery are usually a lot simpler.
