Hungry, Hungry Hustlers Earn $25,000/Month Selling Paleo Bars

What It’s About

Two friends create a healthy and nutritious food bar, minus all the added sugar that other bars contain.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

When they were starting out, Michael and Anthony decided that instead of choosing the flavors they’d offer, they’d put that power in the hands of their customers. As Mike explains, “This is a process that I think very few food startups actually go through, because they just assume that people will like what they make. We didn’t assume anything, we tested it until we knew we had a winning hand.” And as it turns out, their target market preferred bars with less sugar and more real food.

Knowing what your customers will like the most is not always intuitive, so test your product before you make a big commitment! The results may surprise you.

Fun Fact

One particularly late night session, Michael and Anthony had just finished making 500 bars. It was about 11 pm and they were cleaning up for the night. As they headed to the car, with boxes of neatly packaged bars and one last tray of unwrapped (but covered) bars, Anthony tripped on the curb and every single unwrapped bar went flying into the street. After a second of shock, they both burst out laughing at the ridiculousness of the moment.

Episode 219

Michael Winchell and Anthony Ostland weren’t trying to start a food business—they were just hungry. Michael works full-time as a financial analyst and Anthony works full-time as a Crossfit Instructor. Since they’re both mostly Paleo, they wanted a bar that was made out of real food, didn’t have any added sugar or weird stuff, and still tasted good. But they couldn’t find that in stores.

They started prototyping bars in their kitchen at home, from organic ingredients they bought at the store, like sprouted nuts, coconut, dates and egg white protein. Their friends and family loved what they were making so much that they had to borrow more and more Cuisinart mixers. By the time they got to five Cuisinarts in their home kitchen, they realized that maybe they had enough demand to consider a larger scale kitchen.

So they rented some space in a shared commercial kitchen so they could produce the bars more easily and keep up with the demand from friends and family. But before they started selling the bars to strangers, they set up a blind taste test with their target market.

Based on feedback from their blind taste testers, they went through close to 100 iterations across their four different flavors, until they got the flavor profile dialed in, and in mid-2014 they introduced the Mammoth Bars in a clear wrapper and a simple white wrap around label. They kept this packaging for over two years as they continued to grow their demand.

As their demand grew, they decided to improve upon their original packaging. So they started approaching investors, seeking a $50k investment so that they could afford a packaging and website redesign and have some money leftover. They found that $50k in the form of an investment from a friend. They used that to get started on their re-design and launch their product to a larger audience via Kickstarter in September of 2016.

Beyond just running a successful Kickstarter campaign, it also boosted their monthly revenue up to an average of $10k. And, even more significantly, they were approached by Peet’s Coffee about carrying their bars in store. More recently their monthly revenue is hovering around $25k, split roughly evenly between Peet’s Coffee sales, direct online sales, and sales at all other independent retailers.

Quote of the Day
"When you start a side hustle, there are going to be times when nothing goes right and it would just be easier to give up and say ‘Fine, you win…. I’m done.’ And I don’t think there’s anything unique about our story other than the fact that we never did that."

Rocket Scientist Creates Herbal Side Income

What It’s About

After struggling to find a cure for what ails her, a rocket scientist turns to nature.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Lisa got the idea for her side hustle from her own personal health struggles. She spent the better part of a year going to various experts, specialists, and both traditional and non-traditional practitioners to try to find a solution, but it wasn’t until she found an herbalist that she was able to figure out what was happening and work to improve her health.

How can you help pave the path for others and make it easier for them to do something?

Fun Fact

Our side hustler, Lisa, is also a winner of the Silver Snoopy award, which is given by NASA astronauts in recognition of significant contributions to crew safety and mission success.

Notes from Chris

Episode 215

By day, Lisa Akers is a rocket scientist—often traveling from her home to build spaceships, most commonly at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Her side hustle is herbalism, specifically working with private clients suffering from autoimmune diseases.

At first, Lisa wanted this project to be her main gig. She hired coaches, found mentors, and took classes, all in hopes of quitting her day job and following her herbal dream. But she was making those decisions while recovering from serious illnesses and wasn’t in a great frame of mind to see how she could change her workflow at her day job to fit with her health and wellness needs. After starting down this frustrating path, she realized she could both keep her day job and have an herbal business. This is the Side Hustle School way!

Lisa’s first sale was a group program—and it completely sold out.

She now prefers one-on-one consults, where she can customize suggestions for individuals, so she focuses on those. She charges $450 for an initial appointment package and $250 for follow-ups.

Her work in building spaceships ebbs and flows—sometimes she’s busy with assembly and testing, and other times, she’s not. She schedules appointments when she’s got time and mental capacity, and starts a waiting list when necessary in order to avoid over committing.

While she’s helping spaceships take flight, she’s also helping people get well and building an asset for herself.

Quote of the Day
"Being able to work with people and see their health change radically with a few recommended changes is very inspiring. It’s a bit scary because of the self-doubt that people like me seem to face so often. But seeing that change happen is the best part of my day."

Holiday Body Butters Become $1,000/Month Side Hustle

What It’s About

Holiday gifts for family lead two friends to a lucrative side hustle selling body care products.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Meredith and Yolanda’s most successful online marketing strategy has surprisingly been through Facebook. They asked their friends and family to like their page in order to build social proof and began sharing images of the products and their benefits. After a few weeks, the organic likes began slowly flowing in. The Facebook page, five months after launch, has just over 500 likes—and the Instagram following is quickly catching up.

Fun Fact

At the moment, Meredith is in the process of creating 200 balms for an Olympic stylist who gives the athletes she works with an “essentials for athletes” bag to help them get through the grueling Olympic season.

Notes from Chris

Episode 213

The Christmas season was swiftly approaching quickly. Meredith Moseley-Bennett wanted to give her family gifts that reflected her personality and would be more practical and meaningful than random stuff they didn’t need.

She called up her neighbor, Yolanda Grbic, who became a partner in the endeavor. Together, they sourced some ingredients, bought some gift tins, and created a few batches of all-natural body butter and lip balm.

The families and friends of Meredith and Yolanda loved the gifts. They worked well and didn’t contain obscure chemicals. Impressed, they encouraged the two women to consider going into business together.

Their first products ranged from $6 for lip balm and $18 for body butters, but two products just weren’t enough. They wanted to be able to cross-sell other products to their customers.

Once things were up and running, the pair quickly created and launched two new products, Mosquito Minders (an all-natural mosquito repellant) and Tickety Split (an all-natural tick repellant), which have since become Oh My Balm’s best sellers. In the first three months, Oh My Balm saw about $1,300 in online sales and another $1,000 from local pickups.

But in May they booked their first craft show—and everything changed. In one weekend they brought in $850 at a small-scale show. They quickly booked two more shows and made $2,000 more.
