Roadside Fruit Empire Produces Sweet Success

What It’s About

Mmmmmmmm…. peaches and money.

Words of Wisdom

“Get your family involved. It’s a great way to teach kids entrepreneurship and responsibility.”

Fun Fact

Through her roadside stands, Shannon has met a lot of moonshiners wanting to buy peach waste to make moonshine. Another time, one of the contractors totaled a Penske truck with a full load of peaches.

Notes from Chris

Episode 2075
Back in 2013, Shannon Houchin was leaving a big family company with six figures of debt in her name. As she looked for a way to get out of debt quickly, a friend told her how lucrative his roadside peach stands were. Shannon and her 11-year-old son Finn spent the summer in South Carolina and learned how to sell roadside peaches from the Peach Guy himself.

Shannon admits that at first, she did everything wrong. She lost peaches to extreme heat. She lost an entire truckload of peaches in an accident. She also didn’t have the proper oversight on the people working the stands, and cash went missing. But she kept at it and eventually learned the ropes.

In a single summer, she got out of debt, scaled her roadside fruit stand business, Peach Queen, from one to one-hundred stands and created a replicable business model in the process, generating over $50,000 a week in cash flow.

Let’s back up a bit. You know how I talk about transferring your existing skills? Keep in mind that Shannon has a background in logistics and operations. Still, she believes that anyone can start a roadside fruit stand with an initial investment of around $500 to $1,000. In fact, this seasonal hustle has grown into her main hustle.

In addition to running her roadside fruit stands and working as a realtor, Shannon now has a business called Roadside Republic teaching others, including her son, how to profit from this business model.

That’s where Finn comes in. Last summer when he was a high school senior, he decided to take on more responsibility and run two of his own peach stands. With $500 and some borrowed equipment from his mom Shannon, he set up a mobile peach stand at a very busy business in Texas and started selling peaches seven days a week.

He’s experienced every aspect of it from brokering with the orchards to the logistics of receiving shipments—and then delivering peaches to locations—working in the peach stands and learning to sell effectively; managing and training workers, and how to wind down a seasonal summer business.

Classmates from his high school worked at the stand and learned how to run it, too. From just two fruit stands, he made enough money to pay for his first year of college without taking out student loans or working a part-time job while going to college. There’s gold in them peaches!

Since peach season kicks off around Memorial Day and lasts until Labor Day, Shannon says it’s the perfect side hustle for students. They have a little time in between the end of the school year and the start of the season to prepare.

The other cool thing about roadside stands is that the business model can go anywhere, sell anything, and sell at any time—provided they follow any city permitting and licensing requirements. It’s basically a retail business but without the overhead of renting a storefront.

For instance, Shannon can buy a case of peaches for $12-$20 from the orchard and make gross sales of $80 a case. That’s because they’re buying “seconds,” fruit that the orchards can’t sell to grocery stores due to cosmetic imperfections but they’re still tasty straight from the orchard.

A couple other tips: Shannon’s stands are co-located with other very popular businesses so they can piggy back off the destination traffic. Their best locations are in convenience store parking lots. She pays “rent” to the property owner and may or may not have to get a permit depending on the city. People recognize their white tents and red banners and know that they have delicious peaches.

Ultimately, Shannon says she’s on a mission to bring back the roadside stand as a staple of American life. She (and Finn!) wants to grow their network so that people everywhere have access to delicious produce.

First $1,000: “You can’t sell anything until you list it”

What It’s About

An Etsy shop becomes a source of self-confidence.

Notes from Chris

Episode 2074

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Christy Tharp in Des Moines, Iowa. She’s the owner of an Etsy shop called The Blue Breakfront, which initially began out of a family tragedy. Christy has gone on from that to build it into a steady source of income and also a well-deserved source of pride and self-confidence. (At least that’s my interpretation.)

But what about her first $1,000—how did she make that happen, what did it feel like, and what did she learn?

Q&A: “How can I compete with unfair Etsy sellers?”

What It’s About

Competition is fair, but not unfair competition.

Notes from Chris

Episode 2073

We had an episode recently with an Amazon seller who had a competitor posting lots of fake reviews. Today’s caller has been dealing with a similar problem: unfair Etsy sellers.

When you sell on Etsy, everything you sell is supposed to be handmade. Shockingly, not everything is! Many sellers secretly (or not-so-secretly) mass manufacture their goods and even sell under multiple shops to evade detection.

Therefore, our caller is wondering: what can be done?

“I’ve been selling on Etsy, which describes itself as the world’s handcrafted marketplace. But many of the sellers appear to be cheating. They’re selling mass-manufactured products in large quantities. Some of them operate multiple storefronts that sell the same thing with slight variations, or sometimes no variations at all.

If it’s made in a factory in China, how can it be called vintage or handmade? Like I said, these sellers appear to be cheating, but they’re good at SEO and seem to be crowding out honest sellers such as myself. Is there anything that can be done? ”

Q&A: “How to best use a time of unemployment?”

What It’s About

What should this listener do next?

Notes from Chris

Episode 2072

When you’re considering a big change, there are a few different considerations. We tend to focus on the practical, logistical ones—and that makes sense, because that stuff matters.

But simultaneously, something else is happening: the mental and emotional consideration of this change. Sometimes the best answer isn’t always the one that pays the most money or otherwise has the best measurable reward but it’s more the one that your heart leans toward.

Today’s caller faces a decision: during a time of unemployment, does she stretch her side hustle into a career, or go back to traditional work?

Failure Friday: “I thought I’d set up the website incorrectly…”

What It’s About

Not everything is as profitable as fish tank blogging.

Notes from Chris

Episode 2071

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Derrick Adderly, a middle-school principal from Pennsylvania. We got inspired by an original Side Hustle School story about making money from a fish tank blog. Derrick then decided to try his hand at his own blog. It didn’t work out quite as well as fish tank guy, so let’s hear about that as well as what he learned.

Welcome to Throwback Thursday / “Where are they now?” where we take an in-depth look at someone who’s story has evolved considerably since we first featured them.

Last week, we heard from the founder of a baseball training academy. During the pandemic, he opened an additional business selling training gear on Amazon.

Today, in our latest feature, we’ll hear from Kaori Becker, the founder of KaorisKitchen.com. She started teaching mochi-making classes together with her mom in the Bay Area, but pivoted to a new business selling mochi donuts locally in Ohio, where she now lives.

Q&A: “Too many coaches! I know I need to ‘choose a niche,’ but how?”

What It’s About

To niche or not to niche … and how to choose a niche.

Notes from Chris

Episode 2069

Today’s listener is a life coach who wants to get a bit more specific. She’s heard me say that there are too many life coaches (no disrespect, anyone…) and that the way to succeed with this kind of personal service is to choose a focus or niche.

Fair enough, but how do you do this? That’s what she’s wondering…

“I’ve been coaching for several months and I love it! At least when I’m able to do it. So far I’ve only had two clients, in addition to several people from the mentorship program I joined that practice together.

I know I probably need to specialize to stand out, but the problem is I’m not sure how to do that. I’m helping people with positivity, making decisions, and just being more of the person they want to be. So it’s life coaching, basically, and I don’t know how to define it better or focus on something specific. Any tips?”

Do you have any tips for making the transition?”

College Friends Start Utah Fulfillment Center

What It’s About

This fulfilling partnership stacks up.

Words of Wisdom

Nick believes boring businesses are the best businesses. Everyone wants to build a unicorn with a novel idea, but in reality, you are much more likely to be successful starting a window-washing company. You’ll discover it wasn’t the idea you fell in love with, but the independence and challenge you have starting something of your own.

Fun Fact

The craziest product that OTS Shipping fulfills is a product called the Flik. It’s an LED hand that goes in the back window of your vehicle. The default setting is a wave, but if someone cuts you off in traffic you can switch the light setting to flip them the bird.

Notes from Chris

Episode 2068
YYou know the old adage: don’t work with family or friends. You might have even heard it from me! Well, today’s side hustlers had heard it all before too… but decided to go ahead with their business idea anyway.

Nick Malinowski and Parker Barnes are friends from Utah. Nick graduated college recently and landed a job as a data engineer, while Parker is still in school working towards his degree.

Parker had a bit of experience working for a towel company packing orders in the warehouse where he saw first-hand how to run the business. He thought the concept was fairly simple and figured he could start an e-commerce fulfillment center out of his college house’s garage.

Meanwhile, Nick had worked in a fulfillment center one summer during high school, so he knew a bit about the business as well. But they didn’t know if the concept was as simple as it seemed on the surface, so they dug in and did some research about operations, costs, and competition.

After going down the Google rabbit hole, they learned that the fulfillment market—officially known as 3rd-party logistics—was pretty saturated. There were a lot of companies that did it. Good news was, the industry was fragmented and undifferentiated. That meant there was still room for someone new in their area.

Nick and Parker decided to cater to small businesses and startups, which appeared to be underserved. Their research showed that this target market was usually stuck with poor support and high order minimums, so they set up with an emphasis on better customer service. They knew they wouldn’t be able to compete on price because fulfillment is labor intensive, so they had to stand out in other ways.

But they had a big problem: they didn’t have any warehouse space. Furthermore, they didn’t want to commit to a lease when they didn’t have any clients. A real chicken and egg situation. Nick and Parker had to get creative … and quickly.

After 500 cold emails, 200 Facebook messages and 50 Reddit direct messages, they secured their first clients, which included a local Utah Kickstarter that had secured 3,000 orders, a German map company, and few smaller brands. This gave them enough projected cash flow to lease some warehouse space that they found on Utah’s version of Craigslist. Luckily, the space came with racking already installed and a forklift the landlord let them use.

OTW Shipping was launched in November of 2020 and had positive cash flow two months later.

Nick and Parker were bootstrapping the business with their own money. All in all, they spent about $5,000 on legal fees, packaging, a security deposit for that space, and warehouse management software.

The first big hurdle they had to overcome was postage, which they had to pay themselves for the Kickstarter project with 3,000 orders to ship. Because they knew they’d be getting repaid soon, Nick and Parker borrowed $10,000 from their parents as a three-day loan. This was easier than applying for a credit line increase from their bank for such a short period of time.

To get more clients, they searched terms relating to fulfillment every day and responded to any posts using those keywords by giving helpful advice. People then messaged them for more details, and they’d go from there. The process worked so well that they’re still getting leads from comments they left on Reddit a year ago.

They also use SEO. One of their competitors has people searching for pricing and reviews every day. So Nick and Parker use keywords from those searches to get leads. They create content using their own analysis of their competitor’s services and pricing, which leads people to their business instead of the competition.

Building a business as friends has its challenges, but Nick and Parker make it work. They’ve found their friendship has helped them be better partners because they trust each other and can call each other out when needed without fearing any repercussions. As they put it, nobody’s going to get fired for being brutally honest. Having different viewpoints gives them a balanced perspective.

OTW Shipping hit $1M in revenue in its first 12 months in business, moving over 120,000 packages. The business recently re-located to a 20,000 square foot facility and Nick and Parker are on track to triple their revenue in the next year.

They now have two full-time employees, as well as a few part-time workers, and they’re serving over 30 clients. Nick and Parker are looking forward to running the business together for the next few years and then selling it for a new adventure.

First $1,000: Lutheran Pastor Sells & Ships “Consecrate” Boxes

What It’s About

A minister boxes up a special clerical delivery.

Notes from Chris

Episode 2067

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Ruth Hetland. We first featured her back on Episode #1599: Pastor Keeps the Faith with Clergy Subscription Boxes. But what about her first $1,000—how did she make that happen, what did it feel like, and what did she learn?

Interestingly, this story is quite similar to one we featured three weeks ago, from a woman who sells boxes for military spouses. They each used the same pre-launch strategy that she (Becky) mentioned in the previous business, and that Ruth describes here, just a bit differently.

The key point is that each of them wanted to start without spending much money at all, so they used the pre-launch strategy to sell a product before it existed.

Q&A: “How do you forecast earnings for a side hustle?”

What It’s About

Can someone spare a napkin?

Notes from Chris

Episode 2066

In the book Side Hustle, I published a back-of-the-napkin spreadsheet template you could use to forecast income in a new business. It was meant to be a really simple tool that anyone can use, and in fact a bunch of people have used it since then.

That said, a listener came across this tool and has a question: how do you forecast earnings for a project that doesn’t yet exist?

It’s a good question, but there’s also a good answer for it.

“I read about the back-of-the-napkin forecasting in the Side Hustle book, but I’m still a little uncertain of how you can predict income with a new business. You don’t know how many sales or customers you’ll get, so how can you even estimate?

I’m trying to decide between a few different ideas, and if I had a better idea of their income potential it would help a lot.”
