Head-to-Toe Holistic Skincare Biz Shows Moxie

What It’s About

A single mom creates a new life for her family through skincare products.

Words of Wisdom

Ayanna believes there’s no perfect time to start a company, you just need to begin where you are and enjoy the journey. She says it’s all about gumption, grit, and intuition. Everything else is a variable.

Fun Fact

The earliest evidence of skincare comes from Ancient Egypt. Wealthy women would exfoliate with Dead Sea salts or luxuriate in a milk bath. Women would also apply incense pellets to their underarms as deodorant and use floral or spice-infused oils to soften skin.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1963
Ayanna [Uh-yah-nuh] Denise thought she had it all. She had designed clothing for some very successful companies, she’d done a lot of traveling, and even lived abroad. Engaged at age 30, she was looking forward to the wedding. Life kept getting better and better.

But by the time she was 33, Ayanna was the mother of a two-year-old, divorced, and living back in her home town in Georgia.

She was tired, broke, and felt lost.

Fortunately, she had a lot of good experience to draw upon, including a ton of knowledge she’d gained by studying holistic remedies in her 20s. While stressed and depressed, she began reading the small red notebook filled with information from her studies.

She wasn’t looking for a business, but the business found her.

Ayanna began mixing formulas based on her old notes and found it to be therapeutic. She soon created a hair and body oil and began giving it away to family, friends, and sometimes strangers … until one of those friends convinced Ayanna that she could sell the product.

At the time, Ayanna was working in a hotel for minimum wage. It was a job, but she only felt happy when she was mixing her ingredients and seeing how the oil helped others. That same good friend bought the first bottle of skin oil for $10, and Ayanna was in business.

She decided to call it Head to Toe, and soon she had the opportunity to sell at a festival. She used $150 from her tax refund to get supplies and made enough money at the event to cover her rent.

Today, Ayanna Denise Skin (new name) is a thriving business offering simple, small batch skincare products, including a cleanser, a toner and a moisturizer—as well as that same oil she started out with. While she used to craft every batch of products herself in the beginning, a small production facility now makes the skincare products for her.

Again, startup costs were very low: just that $150 from her tax refund. Today Ayanna earns between $2,000 to $4,000 per month from Head to Toe. Going forward, she wants to expand the reach of her products and services. She’s looking to partner with wellness centers and holistic resorts.

First $1,000: Bulldog Blogger Builds Bow-Wow Biz

What It’s About

A family unites to blog about their French Bulldog.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1962

Today’s episode is part of a new feature we’re doing in 2022 called ‘Your First $1,000.’ As you might surmise from the title, this is all about how someone made their first $1,000.

How did they get to that point? Not their first $100,000—that’s cool, but it would probably be a long story.

One thing I’ve learned is that once you begin to earn real money, the steps required to go to the next level—whether it’s $1,000 to $2,000, or even to $5,000 or $10,000 are often easier than that first real paycheck.

With that in mind, today’s feature comes from Kyle Battis. We first featured him (and his kids!) back on Episode #1604: French Bulldog Blog Fetches Extra Bones.

The business grew to become an ongoing asset producing regular passive income. But what about Kyle’s first $1,000—how did he make that happen, what did it feel like, and what did he learn? You’re actually going to hear about his first $3.50.

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…

Q&A: What are the most profitable niches for teaching?

What It’s About

Today’s listener needs an education on profitable ideas for subjects that can be taught to others.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1961

You can make money all sorts of ways, as you may be aware from listening to this podcast. From our very first week when we looked at a guy in England earning thousands of dollars in passive income from blogging about fish tanks to people selling all sorts of odd or unusual services—there reallly is something for everyone.

That said, some topics or niches are much more profitable than others. Today’s caller is wondering if we can cut to the chase and just give him (and you) a list. Fair enough! I’ll give it a try…

“You’ve mentioned that some topics are more profitable than others, like personal finance for example. Do you have a list of topics like these? Also, what do profitable topics have in common? Knowing in advance would be helpful as I’m trying to decide on my next project.”

Q&A: “How can I get YouTube’s algorithm to like me??”

What It’s About

Today’s caller is hoping to crack YouTube’s algorithm. What should they know?

Notes from Chris

Episode 1960

How do you get someone to like you? The usual: you send flowers, you text 100 times a day, you ignore the restraining order because obviously they really want you to be persistent …. Wait, now this is reminding me of last week’s question about getting ghosted by a client. I’m still not over that!

A better question: how do you get an algorithm to like you? You know an algorithm, it’s that thing that determines that Tik-Tok videos or Instagram Reels you see. It’s also what gives you your Google search results. Come to think of it, this algorithm is pretty involved in your life!

Our caller is making a YouTube series, but not getting the traction he’d like. With YouTube, like all of these Web 2 services, the algorithm is really important. Is there anything he can do to have his videos seen by more people?

“I’ve been making a weekly YouTube series, and every week I get a couple of hundred views. It’s not usually much less than that, but also not usually much more—so in other words, growth is slow. I know that so much of what happens on YouTube is determined by the videos that are recommended to people, but it’s unclear how this process works. How can I get the algorithm to like me??”

Failure Friday: “Switchasaurus” Card Game Almost Goes Extinct

What It’s About

This card game nearly experienced a meteoric event.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1959

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Brad Blue. As you’ll hear, he had an idea to create “Switchasaurus,” a dinosaur card game—and ran into some serious problems with manufacturing. Would the project go extinct?

Q&A: “I have a tricky ethical situation with my day job…”

What It’s About

Today’s listener seeks advice on a tough subject.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1957

The intended market for Side Hustle School is people with day jobs who want to earn money outside those jobs—an additional source of income, in other words. Some go on to run their side hustle as a full-time business, others do both, but the point is I understand that most of our listeners are dealing with a number of different variables.

Like today’s caller, for example. Their day job has brought them a side hustle opportunity—but this comes with some tricky ethical dilemmas. Let’s see what’s going on, and see if we can help!

“I work for a medium-sized management consulting firm. I’m assigned to a client for a number of days or weeks, so I get to know them fairly well. Meanwhile, in my spare time I’ve been working on improving my SEO skills, as I’d like to start doing that for my side hustle.

The combination of these roles has led to a dilemma. A recent client learned that I was into SEO, and has asked to hire me on a small, part-time basis to improve their search rankings. It’s exactly the kind of entry-level side hustle role I’ve been looking for. But of course, I got to know this client through my day job. Even though SEO has nothing to do with how the company I work for helps them, I worry that I’m not being totally honest if I don’t disclose this to my employer. And I already know how they’ll respond—they’ll tell me not to do it. Should I a) just do the work on the down-low, b) tell them and hope for the best, or c) something else?”

College Student Turned Fashion Influencer Earns $140,000

What It’s About

A young fashion blogger writes herself into financial independence.

Words of Wisdom

Through her experiences, Harman has learned firsthand how hard it can be to analyze the differences between her and other bloggers and influencers out there. “Believe in yourself and what you are doing. Don’t compare yourself to the bigger fishes in the sea when you know you were born yesterday. Keep doing and take out time for learning.”

Fun Fact

Harman loves food. In fact, on her blog it says that the way to her heart is through pasta and chocolate chip ice cream. “Oh, I’m a hardcore foodie. And I don’t know if other people experience it or not, but I legit get drunk on good food. My brain stops working, I cannot stand properly, and you’ll find me laughing and talking drunkenly, lol. It seems very funny to other people or my friends, and I cannot even control it.”

Notes from Chris

Episode 1956
As a seventeen year old, Harman Awal was amazed with the influencer life she saw on Instagram. These people seemed to have the perfect life—full of food, travel and shopping.

It was a happy and luxurious lens, and Harman wanted it for herself! In the middle of her first year of college, she turned to the internet to see what exactly these influencers were doing, how they were doing it, and the ways they were getting paid.

I should mention that Harman is from India. If you live in North America or the UK, you might not realize that Instagram is pretty big everywhere—in fact, in parts of Asia it has even more adoption than where we live.

What Harman found was that every single one of the influencers she liked had blogs. So, her next question was how to start one of her own. Harman found that many of them were using WordPress, so she followed suit and began her free website.

She didn’t feel pretty enough or perfect enough, she was constantly comparing herself to other influencers, and she didn’t understand why she wasn’t attracting an audience like some of the other accounts she followed.

It took her a year to get out of this mindset. Then, she tried again. She started another free website, then eventually spent $100 to buy a hosting service and the domain name YourGirlKnows.com.

As a student, she didn’t have a lot of money, so she asked if she could use her mom’s credit card for the expenses.

Through her initial research about how to profit from a blog, she could tell that she had a lot more to learn. She didn’t have money to pay for courses. Instead, she picked a successful blogger every day, and read or watched all of their free content about growing her website into something profitable. Harman observed their techniques and took detailed notes.

She knew that to make money, she needed traffic. She saw that a lot of people were getting views from building up their presence on Pinterest. In addition, since she planned on having a female-focused audience, she figured that this would be an effective platform to invest her time into.

Right now, most of her content centers around fashion, skincare, beauty and lifestyle. Harman writes about topics many young women are interested in, from where to buy fake designer bags to how to smell good all day with minimal effort. Her work is reminiscent of Seventeen Magazine.

Harman started this side hustle on April 3rd, 2020. She made her first few cents (yes, cents!) two months after she started with an Amazon affiliate program. With that consistency, marketing, and research, she started making about $900 a month from it by September.

Soon after is when she began to use SEO, which skyrocketed her profits to be $400 a day. This roughly translated to $144,000 a year. While she has to reinvest some of the money back into the site, she gets to pocket most of it.

As a 20-year-old student living in India, Harman says that this amount of money is “seriously a lot.” In India, many people live with their parents until they are 25 or even longer, so being financially independent makes both her and her parents incredibly happy.

YourGirlKnows has made her financially independent, and she is proud to be the youngest earning member of her family.

Today’s listener has plenty of interest in her services but is unable to make a sale.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1948

With coaching and consulting, it’s very common to offer a free session of some kind to make sure it’s a good fit and to gently sell someone on the paid service. That’s the idea: go from free to paid, at least as long as you the coach/consultant feels confident in providing value.

Well, as I said, it’s a common model but the key point is you have to convert those prospects. Today’s listener is experiencing lots of demand … but only for the free version of her offer, not the paid one. Let’s see if we can help her!

“I set up a page to offer my service helping people with self-confidence and negotiation. As part of my offer, I include a free 15-minute consultation to see if my coaching would be a good fit. I’m doing at least one of these a day, and often they end up going to 20 or 30 minutes. I can impart a lot of value during that time, but maybe that’s the problem: very few of these free sessions convert to real clients! I don’t want to spend all my time helping people for free. Should I change something about this process or even stop doing the free consults altogether?”
