Episode 3212

The resumé writing space is a noisy bazaar: Fiverr gigs churn out generic templates for lunch-money prices, while boutique coaches charge rent-level fees. Lena wants to blend AI speed and recruiter insight, landing in the middle—high enough to signal value, low enough to scale. But buyers need proof they’ll actually get interviews, not automated word soup. Let’s map the sweet spot..

"I’ve been an in-house HR manager for years and I’m experimenting with GPT prompts plus ElevenLabs voice notes to rewrite résumés so they sail through applicant-tracking systems. There are $20 DIY tools and $500 premium writers—where do I fit? How do I price, prove results, and keep clients from thinking it’s ‘just AI’?"

The job search world has gone through a lot of change in the past few years, in part because of our sponsor ZipRecruiter and other companies, but also because of AI. AI in general and how people apply for jobs, how they create resumes, cover letters, any other materials that try to get past different algorithms and try to reach the right people. If you wanna update your resume, you can do it yourself, you can go to Fiverr and pay somebody five bucks, or you can probably pay somebody hundreds of dollars or more. We've got boutique coaches on LinkedIn that are charging high fees. And today we've got somebody who wants to kind of split the difference a little bit.

The caller wants to blend AI speed and recruiter insight. That's some of the value that recruiters bring. They're actually pretty good at connecting people with higher paying jobs. So she wants to be high enough to signal value and low enough to scale. So how does this work?

She's wondering about AI optimized resumes. Can she create this service? She's experimenting with chat, GPT and other LLMs, other tools and such. Let's talk about this business idea. And by the way, welcome to Side Hustle School.

I always try to give you a practical tip or some advice, or at least a point of inspiration for you to be thinking about your first or your next side hustle. So today the topic is AI resumes. You've got a detailed question from our listener and my response. Right up for this quick shout out to our sponsor. [Music]

Hey, Chris, I'm Lina from Richmond.

I've been an in-house HR manager for years and I'm experimenting with GPT prompts plus 11 labs of voice notes to rewrite resumes. So they sail through applicant tracking systems. There are $20 DIY tools and $500 premium writers. Where do I fit? How do I price, prove results and keep clients from thinking it's just AI?

Things are changing so quickly and I don't always know what to do. [Music]

All right, Lina, let's talk about positioning, pricing and proof. I think that is your three step plan. Positioning, brand yourself as algorithm proof resumes, human approved. So basically you're like, I'm gonna get past the bot.

I'm gonna help you get past AI or machines and be able to impress the actual recruiter who's making decisions on the other side. As for pricing, I love mid-market pricing. I think that's always good for lots of products. Mid-market in this case, probably something like 149 to 199, 150 to $200. Maybe there's like an upsell of $49 audit tier where you get some quick feedback creditable toward a full rewrite perhaps.

So that hits a few different psychological points. It's like not the bargain basement, it's not that fiber, but it's below sticker shock. And then proof, offer a 30 day interview increase guarantee. I think this is actually vital. Basically clients who apply to X number of roles and don't get any callbacks, get a free rewrite.

It's not gonna take you a lot of work. Most people won't actually require it, but it provides a lot of reassurance that this is gonna be a good investment for our clients. And track success stories, like track success stories like interviews booked, job offers accepted, wherever you can share that information. Even in like an anonymous stat, 83% of clients report interviews within two weeks. For example, that is gonna help you.

And then as for the workflow, you need some kind of intake form. You need the prompts that generate the AI resume. You spend a little bit of time kind of polishing it up. Make sure nothing just goes through AI. You wanna do a little bit of a manual review.

I think that's always important when using language tools these days. And then deliver it with Google Docs and maybe a loom video walkthrough. I mean, that's basically it, that's the process. Each resume takes about an hour. If you're charging $200, if you do 10 a week, well, that's like $6,000 a month before your overhead.

I think that is a pretty wonderful side hustle. Let us know how it goes. Let us know if it works or if you change it up somehow.
