In this week's First $1,000 segment, we hear from Daniel, a coder working on an app for his main side hustle. In the meantime, he wanted to try something different — so, inspired by the classic advice of solving a problem, he started helping people regain access to their locked or hacked accounts, usually on Facebook.
These days lots of people get hacked, and even after a company cuts off the hackers, the account doesn't always return to its owner. Daniel expected it to be a technical problem — but it turned out to be more of a social one: convincing account reps to care, and being persistent. Over time he developed a few relationships he can call on for difficult cases.
To find customers, he browses social accounts for people posting about being locked out, then reaches out. It can be tricky, since scammers pitch those same people, but about one in twenty become a customer — a good ratio when it only takes seconds to reach out. He charges $97, and clients pay only when he succeeds.
So far he's helped fifteen people — well over a thousand dollars — and who knows, it might turn into his main hustle.
