Today's listener wonders if he's missed the golden age of blogging. He wants to start one — but is it too late?

My day job is in software sales, but I'm interested in helping people who hate sales — like freelancers, for example — people who find it "icky" or "gross." I'm thinking of starting a blog because it would give me the freedom to work on it whenever I can, but I'm wondering if it's the right path. I'm also wondering if I've missed the boat and there are millions of blogs out there. If you don't think I should have a blog, what should it be?

You haven't missed the boat, and not everything has been said. But let's make sure your goals are aligned: Jon said a blog appeals because it would let him work remotely — and those two things aren't always connected. If working remotely is the main goal, there might be an easier path. (People who hate selling but need to sell, by the way, is a big market.)

Assuming Jon really wants to blog and make money from it, here's what to know: become the world's leading expert on one topic with an obvious way to monetize. Prepare two to three months of content in advance so a busy week doesn't derail you. And every day, do two things — write something, and reach out to someone. Those two habits grow a blog over time.

It's not too late. There are usually easier ways to make money, but I remain a fan of online writing — even in the age of podcasts, YouTube, and everything else.
