“Tap dance can be communicated really well over video — I wanted to allow a pathway for people to discover it for themselves.”
In this week's Throwback Thursday segment, we hear from Bill Simpson in Melbourne, Australia, founder of HowtoTapDance.com. His side hustle, Just Tap, is a series of video courses that help adult beginners learn to tap dance from home.
It grew naturally out of more than a decade of teaching. Bill realized tap dance communicates surprisingly well over video, and that many people around the world had no access to quality instruction. He wanted to give them a pathway to discover the art form for themselves.
Since we last spoke, Just Tap has become his main hustle — his life's work, as he puts it. The beginner courses became a springboard for new offerings, including a six-week tap boot camp with a small, intimate group of dancers.
His biggest challenge is a familiar one: getting out of the mindset of doing everything himself. But the most exciting part is receiving emails from people all over the world telling him how he helped them start their tap dance journey — turning what was once only a dream into reality.
