If you have a vision or a big idea, pay attention to it — not everything has to be quick or easy. Today's listener has one of those big ideas.
Hi Chris, this is Will, and I have an idea that feels both exciting and scary. I want to make a board game. The more I think about it, the more I realize there are a lot of elements involved, from game design to actual construction to stocking inventory and working with retailers — and all of this is before actually marketing the game. It's a lot ... but like I said, it feels exciting, and I really want to try. Any tips or advice? If it helps, I have some money to spend and I'm not in a rush.
Will already sees the many elements involved — which is exactly the right first step. My approach: divide them into categories — game design, manufacturing, fulfillment, marketing — then find a role model who's gone down this path.
Here's a tip: you don't need them to be your mentor. Just look at what they did. That alone can reveal the categories, tasks, and even specific steps to follow, without relying on someone else's time.
From there, consistently work toward the steps, and tackle new challenges as they crop up. Let's use the rest of the year to make something fun and meaningful — even if it's hard.
