Today's listener teaches data analytics and wants to scale with recorded videos — but he's feeling buried by all the tools.
My side hustle is teaching — in particular, I help folks launch careers in data analytics and visualization. So far, I've been teaching in person or through live online classes. I now want to scale my business with recorded videos. My question is, I'm overwhelmed with all the tools I need to set up and run an online business: for websites there's Squarespace, WordPress, or building a custom site; Camtasia for screencasts; Teachable; and for email there's Mailchimp and Constant Contact — plus SEO, SEM, Facebook, and Instagram marketing. Oh my God, I'm a techie and I find this overwhelming! Not to mention picking the right plan within those tools, and then the cost. Do you have suggestions on how to filter and choose the best online tools to help scale my business?
Big picture: the tools exist to make your life easier, not harder. So what does he actually need? Most of what he listed is genuinely relevant — email marketing and screencasting are essential — but he can hold off on many of the marketing tools until he feels pinched, whether financially or from information overload (which is a real cost of its own).
On picking the right plan within each tool: most SaaS products use tiered pricing because it helps them make more money. Only pay for features you'll use. When in doubt, start with the basic plan and upgrade later — those attractive "pro" features often go unused. (I'm paying $100 a month for something I don't use at all, so do as I say, not as I do.)
One more thing: don't forget what's already working well.
