Let's talk about the spreadsheet king. I'm excited to record this episode. I love talking about these people who've made so much money from Excel spreadsheets. It's been kind of a theme over the years. What if your most boring work skill could become a $136,000 a year business reaching customers worldwide? That's exactly what Perna Dugarilla discovered when he transformed his

Microsoft Excel expertise into a thriving online education business from India. And this guy in fact was the original spreadsheet king. I wrote about him in the $100 startup. He became a little bit famous, partly from that, but also from his own work and ended up talking about him in many different interviews and such over the years. We then had Miss Excel later on the TikTok Excel teaching superstar who made hundreds of thousands of dollars a year actually surpassed him in terms of online income. But it also is a wonderful example of how if you can solve a practical problem,

there's a lot of value to be uncovered. So this is part of our weekend workshop series. It's all about helping you learn the key steps to a new hustle, one step or concept per week. We're using the book side hustle from idea to income in 27 days. And we went through the 27 steps in the first half of the year. And now we're looking at these more detailed case studies so you can understand

how people apply the framework. So let's talk about Perna. Well, he started with a very simple personal blog. He was just writing about his life in India, family updates, and so on casual hobby with no business intent. But then one day Perna made a strategic decision that would change everything. He began adding Excel tips and tutorials to that blog sharing the techniques he

had learned as a business analyst. And these weren't generic copy and paste tutorials. They were practical solutions to real workplace problems that he had encountered and solved. The response surprised him. Readers from around the world started engaging with his Excel content, asking questions and requesting more advanced tutorials. And then he realized he had accidentally

tapped into a massive global need. His genius was recognizing that Excel training wasn't really about spreadsheets. It was about professional success. He positioned his services around a powerful promise that his training programs would make customers heroes in front of their bosses and colleagues. That insight transformed everything. Instead of teaching technical features,

Perna focused on business outcomes. Students didn't just learn formulas. They learned how to solve problems that would get them noticed and promoted at work. His tagline became helping people become awesome at Microsoft Excel. But of course, the deeper promise was career advancement through technical competence. And he also didn't just target the Indian market where he lived,

he deliberately aimed for international customers from the beginning. And that decision proved crucial for both pricing and scale. By serving a global English speaking market, Perna could charge premium rates that reflected international standards rather than local pricing. That geographic arbitrage became a key competitive advantage. So you can probably understand just what an advantage it was and how this came together. But let's take a quick break. When we return,

tell you a little bit more about how he built authority and why this was so successful. And also, what could you do? What could you do like this? How can you take a skill or set of knowledge and apply it in a way that creates transformation for potential customers, clients, gets them to purchase, and perhaps changes your life as well? Hey, we'd like to aim big here. Let's take a quick break. We'll be right back. Perna's success came from establishing

himself as a trusted educator before ever asking for payment. He spent months creating valuable free content, building a reputation for clear explanations and practical solutions. And when he finally introduced his paid offerings, students already knew and trusted that ability. In fact, they saw him as their personal Excel expert and advocate. He then created multiple ways for customers to learn from him. Downloadable guides, an ongoing training school, various specialized

courses, a range of price points. He basically built out a complete product suite. And by his third year of operation, Perna's Excel training business was generating over $200,000 a year. In the context of India's economy, this income was extraordinary. It was equivalent to what many successful executives earned. This was also a sustainable business model. It lasted for months,

for years. New customers arrived daily from Google searches, media coverage, $100 startup, and word of mouth recommendations. In fact, he described his business as one that would be difficult to turn off even if he wanted to. So naturally, this success allowed him to live comfortably while maintaining a frugal lifestyle. He was able to travel. He was able to do different

things, and it was completely transformative for him. All right, that's great for Perna. What about you though? Well, Perna's approach works for any specialized skill that has global demand. This was such a key market because so many people are using Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheet tools every day. Lots of professions, people will spend hours a day using these tools. So if you can

save them a lot of time and help them look good in front of their boss, as you can imagine, that's extremely valuable. So there could be something else. In fact, there are many things. The key is to identify knowledge that people need for professional advancement, then packaging it as outcome-focused education rather than technical training. Nobody needs training, that's just kind of boring. But if you're like, "I'm going to change your life and save you two

hours a day and help you look like a hero in front of your boss or your customers," again, that's where the value is. So whether your expertise is in project management, digital marketing, any other professional skill, the same principles apply, focus on those career outcomes, and think globally from day one. For Perna, he transformed mundane spreadsheet skills into a six-figure global business by understanding that people want to buy professional success and recognition more than just education. So if spreadsheets can be sexy when positioned right, imagine what's possible with your own expertise. The question isn't whether you have valuable knowledge, it's how you're going to package that knowledge to help others become heroes, just like Perna did. And as always, my friends, it's better to have a simple idea you can start

right away than a brilliant idea that never launches. I hope you will take action to get closer to your goals today. I hope you'll also continue to listen, subscribe, or follow wherever you get your podcasts. My name is Chris Guillebeau. You're listening to Side Hustle School.
