What if charging $5 for your service was actually the first step toward building a scalable digital business? That's exactly what Tim Aten discovered when he transformed his budget resume design service into a template business that generated passive income while he focused on his college studies. So it's a pretty cool story. And I should say first, welcome to Weekend Workshop. We're gonna call this one Template Biz Evolves from Service to Scale.

This segment is all about helping you learn the key steps to a new hustle, one step or concept per week. We're using the book Side Hustle from idea to income in 27 days. It's available wherever books are sold. Gonna take you through those key steps along with listener stories and examples. And in fact, for the first half of the year, we went through the 27 steps in the book.

Now in the second half, we're looking at more detailed case studies so you can hear how people apply this framework. All right, so Tim Aten, let's start with his story. He was a college student looking for ways to earn money without interfering with his academic schedule. He was pretty busy. And he'd also developed design skills through coursework and personal projects.

And he was looking for ways to monetize these abilities again around his schedule. So Tim started by offering resume design services on freelancing platforms like Fiverr for $5 per resume. Okay, five bucks a resume. That price point attracted plenty of customers, but Tim quickly discovered the fundamental problem with low cost service work. He's basically trading time for money at an unsustainable rate.

Even working efficiently, he can only complete a limited number of resumes per week. The work itself was repetitive. This is a key point. Tim found himself creating similar layouts, comparable design elements, solving the same formatting challenges over and over. Most clients wanted professional looking resumes, but they didn't need completely unique custom solutions.

So Tim began to notice patterns in what his customers actually valued. They weren't paying for completely original work. They just wanted professionally designed resumes that looked current and helped them stand out. Those design elements that impressed clients could be systematized and reused. So that's the breakthrough, right?

He discovers rather than designing individual resumes, one by one, five bucks at a time, he could create high quality templates that customers could then customize themselves. Instead of earning $5 per hour, Tim could potentially earn $5 per template sale without spending any time at all. And then hopefully he could sell many of those templates. So he next researched the existing market. He discovered significant opportunities for improvement.

Many available templates were outdated, poorly designed or difficult to customize. And he was like, "I'm gonna provide a superior product and charge a higher price while providing better value to customers." And that's what he set out to do. I'll talk about what happened, the results, and how you might apply this to an idea of your own right after this quick break. Stay with us. [Music]

Tim's transition from service provider to template creator required developing new business skills beyond the design skills he already had.

He established an online sales platform that could handle digital product delivery automatically. This automation eliminated the manual fulfillment work that had consumed time in his service business. He also spent time making detailed product descriptions and marketing materials that helped customers understand how his templates would solve their resume challenges. This marketing focus was crucial because template customers were buying solutions rather than custom services. His pricing strategy also reflected the different value proposition of templates versus custom work.

Individual templates sold for more than his $5 service rate, but customers received immediate value. They didn't have to wait. They also got unlimited usage rights that justified the higher price point. Within six months, Tim's template business was generating far more income than his previous service work while requiring significantly less ongoing time investment. The passive nature of digital product sales meant that he could earn money while attending classes, studying, sleeping, doing anything else that he wanted to do.

Like he just checks his phone once in a while and there's money there, that's nice. And that's what you want as well, I think. For Tim, he discovered that successful templates generated income for months or years after creation, providing that ongoing income that supported his education and reduced financial stress. So what could you do like this? What could you do?

Maybe you don't want to make resume templates, but let's apply his service to template transformation to your own skills. Think about your skills, the things that you are good at, analyze your service work, analyze your areas of knowledge and expertise. Think about what you're really good at. Ask your friends as well if you're not sure. Sometimes people around us can identify those areas more easily than we can for ourselves.

Basically look for problems that you solve repeatedly that don't require complete customization. Then research existing product solutions to identify opportunities for improvement. What can you do to differentiate yourself? Third, create template versions of your most successful service solutions, focusing on applicability while maintaining the quality that makes your service or your knowledge valuable. And then step four, develop some kind of automation system for sales and delivery.

And I should just note the developing doesn't have to be that hard. A lot of existing platforms will do this for you. So you might be able to do it entirely with Shopify or something else. This service to template model works across a lot of different creative and professional services, social media, business consulting, web design, could be lots of other stuff as well. The pattern is to identify the systematizable elements within service work and package them as products that provide similar value with better scalability.

You can do it, at least you can if you want to. There's other stuff you could do as well. So you've got to choose what's most important to you. But just consider what are you doing to create passive income in your life? I think that's an important question.

I think that can help you with lots of other things in your life. So I'm gonna leave you with that today. And my encouragement is it's better to have a simple idea. You can start right away than a brilliant idea that never launches. Thanks so much for tuning in today.
