Hi Chris, I'm Melissa from Nashville. I've got a knack for home organization and have helped friends and family sort of declutter their spaces. I've been thinking about turning this into more of a consulting service but I'm not really sure how to get started. Could you share some examples of how others have successfully turned these types of organizational skills into a business? What steps should I take to build and market my service?

All right, Melissa, let's talk about turning organizational skills into a consulting service. Throughout the years, we have featured a number of home organizers in different parts of the country, I think a few international as well. And they've all found kind of a unique way to market their service, whether it is through consulting, whether it is through actually doing the home organization. Many people struggle, many people struggle with clutter, they need help organizing their homes and workspaces.
So how can you get started? First step is to define your niche. Let's get a little bit specific. What kind of organization do you want to focus on? There could be general home organization, office organization, digital decluttering is a big thing these days.
Even specialized services like organizing for families, seniors or small businesses. We featured someone once who is helping people organize their loved ones affairs after a death in the family. So that's a really important need and it calls for all kinds of care and attention. You're actually really providing a key service in that case. But whatever your niche is, choose and define that niche, then develop your service offering.
So go from idea to offer, go from I'm a home organizer to this is specifically what I do, I offer these consultations, I offer this kind of hands-on practice or it could be virtual, maybe I offer a workshop, maybe I have a maintenance plan, whatever it is getting really specific on, first I've got a target market or a niche and now I have an offer. And so once you've got an offer, you want to then build your portfolio. You want to get some experience, do this with your friends and family for free and get before and after photos of the spaces, ask for testimonials from them. That's all you need, that's your portfolio. Now you're good to go.
You take that portfolio, you put it up on a simple website, a simple but professional website and then you see what you can do to market the business. How do you market? All kinds of options there. We spend many episodes talking about content marketing, networking, local advertising, promotions and so on. But that's all you need to get started.
And once you're started, then there's a lot more that you could do from there, but those are the steps to get going.
