So let's see, today we're gonna meet the semi-retired inventor who's now demystifying the patent process for new creators.
He is a non-lawyer who advises potential side hustlers, small business owners about the patent process, tells people like what you need to know before you actually go and get a patent lawyer and begin that process. Because that can be quite extended and quite expensive. And so he's approaching it from an angle of like, okay, I'm not a lawyer, but I've been through this multiple times myself. And I know this world, so I'm gonna talk to you about it and give you some non-biased advice. Then you can kind of decide like, do you want to go down that track?
Or is it better to do something else? Not everything needs to be patented, trademarked, et cetera. Sometimes that can be more trouble and expense than it's worth. But other times it is important, right? So this guy kind of just has made a little bit of a side career of advising people in this world.
So what's happened since we first heard from Martin, I think several years ago, let's hear this update from him. He is now, as I said, semi-retired, but one cool thing about your side hustlers you can keep making money and doing something that's fulfilling long after your other work wraps up. Hello, I'm Martin. After a career spent innovating and wrestling with the patent process for my own creations, I now find myself in what you might call my encore career.
Having gone through the patenting process multiple times, I've accumulated a wealth of knowledge that I realized could benefit others. Now in what many consider the golden years of retirement, I've carved out a niche offering non-legal patent consultation. That's been both rewarding and surprisingly quite lucrative. When I started, it was less about the income and more about staying active and giving back to the inventor community. I saw many bright inventors struggle with the same hurdles I had faced, understanding patent jargon, navigating the filing process and knowing when it was time to seek legal advice.
My consultancy began informally advising friends and local inventors. And that's largely where I've kept it. My approach is practical and straightforward. I draw on my own experiences to guide clients through the early stages of the patent process. I offer insights into patent search strategies, drafting the initial application and the overall timeline of the process.
Importantly, I make it clear from the start, while I can share valuable knowledge and strategies, there comes a point in every patent journey where professional legal advice is not just beneficial, but necessary. One aspect of my service that sets me apart is the personalized workshops I conduct. These sessions delve into the nuances of the patent process tailored to the specific needs and industries of my clients. Despite the potential for higher earnings through more scalable online webinars, I prefer the impact and personal connection of face-to-face interactions. Financially, the consultancy does well, charging by the hour with rates that reflect the depth of my experience and the niche expertise I offer.
However, the true reward comes from the success stories of inventors who've navigated the patent process more confidently and effectively with my guidance. To those embarking on their own patent journeys, my advice is twofold. Arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible and recognize the value of experienced guidance. The patent process is complex and often frustrating, but with the right preparation and support, it's far from insurmountable. In this chapter of my life, I've found a fulfilling balance between sharing my knowledge and continuing to learn and enjoying what many would call retirement.
For me, this consultancy isn't just work. It's a way to stay connected to the world of innovation, mentor the next generation of inventors, and ensure that great ideas get the protection they deserve. [Music]
