Hey friends, hey community, what's up? Welcome to Side Hustle School. This is Chris Guillebeau, your host. And today's episode is part of a feature we call your first $1,000. Your first $1,000, how did someone, in fact, make their first $1,000 in a side hustle and income generating project without quitting their job?
What are the lessons learned along the way? How'd they get the idea? How do we kind of deconstruct that process, hopefully so that somebody else out there can follow it? And that's one of my favorite things of making the show is I get to hear over and over about the projects you're working on and what happens along the way. So I just try to kind of get out of the way here, provide a little introduction and let's hear from somebody.
Today we're gonna hear from Susan Peterson. She is a freelance writer based in Indiana. How, in fact, did Susan earn her first $1,000? What did it feel like? What did she learn?

Hi there, my name is Susan and I am a freelance writer based in Indiana. I've always been a wordsmith crafting stories and articles for as long as I can remember, but it wasn't until a few years ago that I decided to turn my passion into a full fledged business. I started by reaching out to small businesses and websites in the health and wellness niche offering my writing services. I made sure to highlight my expertise in this area and to showcase my writing skills through a portfolio on my website and social media profiles.
It wasn't long before I was getting paid for my writing and before I knew it, I had earned my first $1,000. But it wasn't just about the money. I was doing what I loved and helping others in the process. One of the biggest lessons I learned was the importance of niche specialization. By focusing on the health and wellness niche, I was able to differentiate myself from other writers and appeal to a specific audience.
This allowed me to build a reputation as an expert in this area and to attract more clients. I also learned the importance of being organized and efficient with my time. Freelance writing can be a bit of a roller coaster with projects coming in at all hours of the day and night. But by being organized and efficient, I was able to balance my workload and meet deadlines. A big highlight for me was when I was able to secure a regular client, a health and wellness website.
This allowed me to have a steady stream of income and to focus on longer term projects. If you are thinking about starting a freelance writing business, my advice would be to focus on a niche and to showcase your expertise. Make sure to build a strong online presence and to be organized and efficient with your time. And most importantly, be passionate about your writing and the difference you can make for others. Freelance writing has been a fantastic journey for me and I wouldn't have it any other way.
