Notes from Chris
Episode 1799
What’s the deal with those in-app payments? The deal is they are making a lot of money for app developers and of course for Apple. These days it’s much more common to be able to download an app for free—with limited features—and then pay to unlock its full capabilities. A listener is making his first app and wondering a bit about the best way to structure payments. Also, just an idea here: could there be a subscription that unsubscribes you from subscriptions? Or looks for discounts? Just thinking out loud, let me know if you come up with it…"I'm developing my first app, a tool to help people with specific activity goals. I've been thinking about this for years, and when I first had the idea, I assumed I'd sell the app for a single low-price, like a couple of dollars. Apps are an easy purchase and they reach a big audience, so if I got a couple of hundred people downloading mine every day, that would add up to real money. Of course, now every app is a subscription, so I'm wondering about how to account for that. Many people are tired of so many subscription payments, so right now I'm thinking I'll stick with a single low purchase price and then you own it forever. However, no matter what I do with that decision, it seems there are now other pricing decisions to make as well. For example, some apps are free to download, but then you pay to unlock certain features. What's the advantage of offering an app that way as opposed to just "Buy it now and access everything?""Listen to today's episode to learn more...
