Words of Wisdom

Print on Demand (P.O.D.) services are a great way to experiment with your designs with little to no risk. If you have three or four designs, and you're not sure which is better, using a P.O.D. service allows you an opportunity to upload all of your designs and see which one people choose. This process would be much more complicated with screen printing, and you may have to make a decision before you start taking orders.

Fun Fact

Krista started making Horse Junkie Gear after returning to riding in her mid-40’s following a pretty long hiatus. She filled her closet with all of the wonderful performance gear she needed, but what she really wanted were some cute, comfy tees that would look good both in the ring and out. After several fruitless searches, she shook the cobwebs off of her graphics programs and made them herself. After all, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself!

Notes from Chris

Episode 131
Krista Fabregas has worked at NASA while building multiple e-commerce sites over the years, including one where sales topped $1M. She now writes for an educational website by day and runs The Horse Junkie on the side.

She’s a horseback rider and a former graphic designer, so it’s a fun creative outlet that matches both her passion and her skills.

She’s tried it two different ways: the first method she used is the more traditional method. She set up her own screen print shop, which is actually affordable—it cost about $2,000. Her first year, she sold $8,000 in t-shirts, and with a high-profit margin, cleared over $5,200 in net income. But this episode isn’t about screen-printing.

What did she do? She switched from screen printing all those Horse Junkie and "Barn Life Is Better" shirts to using a P.O.D. company to do it.

So which is better? Well, Krista thinks this new way will be better in the long-run—or at least she’s willing to experiment and take the chance.

Quote of the Day
"I don’t see this providing the living of my previous e-commerce win, but it’s fun and P.O.D. makes it easy to run. Plus, I now spend my Saturdays riding horses instead of printing, packing, and mailing tees."
