Words of Wisdom

Erica says that although it can be hard sometimes, it’s okay if everything doesn’t happen quickly. “The struggles that I’ve encountered are just wanting everything quickly. Wanting to be a household name in the small business industry right away. Forgetting that I literally launched in May. I tend to be a bit hard on myself at times. I never gave myself off hours. Well, I’ve learned that everything takes time and anything worth having is worth working for and waiting for and nurturing.”

Fun Fact

Erica has another side hustle – painting! Although she hasn’t done it in a few years, she has loved creating pop-art style paintings of celebrities or cartoons. People like 50 Cent, Elle Varner, Kid Fury of The Read and Major Galore of Love and Hip-Hop own her paintings.

Episode 1380
Late one night in January of 2020, Erica Hackett and her ten-year-old daughter, Jada, couldn’t fall asleep. So instead, they decided to stay up and talk.

At one point, Jada said that she wanted to start a business. Erica asked her what kind, and Jada said that she wanted to make lip gloss.

It turns out that making lip gloss is harder than it seems, and it’s also incredibly messy. This was not the business of Jada’s sleepless dreams. But they’d bought a lot of supplies—so instead of wiping the slate clean, Erica started researching what else they could be used for.

Through her Googling, she learned that lip gloss and soap had a lot of common ingredients. Thus it was decided: they were going to make their own soap.

For the next five months, Erica and Jada worked to launch their new soap side hustle, called Dreamstar Cosmetics. After a couple of false starts with other online store platforms, they made a website on a platform called Big Commerce. Jada designed the logo and they hired an illustrator to bring it to life.

Once that was done, they applied the logo to the labels and website. Dreamstar launched in May 2020—that’s right, this is prime pandemic time. They received their first order within an hour of launching from one of Erica’s best friends. The next day, they received their very first request from a wholesaler.

Since launching in May, Erica and Jada have made $11,000 in revenue. It’s been hard to keep the items in stock since it’s just the two of them working from their kitchen. Not only that, but Erica has fallen into the slippery slope of working too much on her side hustle. She would work on Dreamstar late into the night after her day job and on the weekends. At first, she wanted to have her company be a household brand immediately, but eventually she realized that she needed to make herself take time away from both her day job and her side hustle.

Despite the struggles, Erica has loved the experience. One of her favorite parts is watching Jada’s entrepreneurial skills surface. Jada finds GIFs and writes captions for them. She picks out scents and colors for the new products.

Not only that, but Erica has loved learning that she can do more than just draw gas and electricity lines all day, which is what she does for her full-time job. With Dreamstar, she has been able to tap into her creativity again.

She would love to make it her full-time gig one day, and even open a brick-and-mortar shop.

Office Manager Cleans Up With Etsy Soap Store

What It’s About

An experienced traveler raises the bar, combining her love of travel and soap making.

Words of Wisdom

Hear what Julie has to say about selling on Etsy: “Having an Etsy store is work and it requires consistency and discipline. If you don’t have that or the time to devote to it, then it’s probably not going to be worth it. Work hard, hustle, make mistakes, learn from them, and continue to make better products.”

Fun Fact

Historians date the earliest discovery of soap to ancient Babylon around 2800BC. The first soap recipe consisting of water, alkali and cassia oil was discovered on a Babulonian clay tablet and has been dated at 2200 BC. Clearly humans have cared about cleanliness for a long time.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1284
Several years ago, Julie Sanchez was working as an English teacher while living in Shanghai, China. The job was fun and interesting but had one big downside: it wasn’t great for making the social connections she craved as an expat in the city. In an effort to meet people who weren’t her students, she signed up for a soap-making workshop. Little did she know she’d end up loving it.

Eventually she returned home to the U.S., settling into a new job as an office manager for a non-profit. The job paid the bills so that she could go about enjoying the rest of her life. But even that became difficult when her life turned into a soap opera.

A failed relationship made her reassess things, and she looked to do something new and adventurous. You see, being back home was tough for Julie. Before China she’d lived in both Belgium and Japan and visited many other countries in between.

She decided to combine her nomadic history with her love of soap making. Specifically, she wanted to create fragranced soaps inspired by scents from around the world. She set aside one hundred and fifty dollars to buy soap molds, mold-pour bases, and fragrant oils. Then, she got to creating.

The techniques Julie learned back in China quickly came back to her and it didn’t take long to produce her first successful bar. She called it “Amsterdam.” It was made using hemp seed oil and smelled like cannabis, something the city is famous for. But even then, she wasn’t viewing her hobby as a business opportunity. For now, it was merely a passion project, and it remained that way for another year while she experimented with different scents and oils.

What stopped Julie from doing this earlier was her desire for everything to be perfect. Finally, she decided: just go for it! In mid-2018 she summoned the courage to open her own Etsy store, calling it the Adventuress Soap Co.

She expects these sales to double in her second full year of business. While some businesses are all washed up due to the coronavirus pandemic, Julie’s is doing better than ever! With more people at home, more people are online shopping and her sales have increased. While it isn’t generating enough income for her to leave her day job quite yet, she’s had her best months yet since the craziness started.

The increase isn’t just due to luck. The whole time, Julie has been expanding her range of soaps, and even introducing new product lines in the form of lip balms, perfume oils and many more. All inspired by scents from around the world.
