Failure Friday: “Switchasaurus” Card Game Almost Goes Extinct

What It’s About

This card game nearly experienced a meteoric event.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1959

I believe we can learn as much from failure as we can from success, if not more. It’s with this principle in mind that I offer you a weekly segment called Failure Friday: a collection of short stories all about mistakes, missteps, disasters, and of course, failure.

Just like our Throwback Thursday segment, you’ll hear directly from side hustlers who have struggled to get something off the ground. They’ll tell you a short story of something that went very wrong.

The stories will vary, but often it starts with an idea, what they thought would happen and what really happened—and of course, what they learned.

Today’s short story features Brad Blue. As you’ll hear, he had an idea to create “Switchasaurus,” a dinosaur card game—and ran into some serious problems with manufacturing. Would the project go extinct?

Listen to today’s episode to learn more…

Two Friends Create Questionable Card Game

What It’s About

Two friends see a fun opportunity to help people connect through their card game.

[podcast_details]

Words of Wisdom

Dennis shares some encouraging words about working with someone else, “If you can find a good partner, it can really help. We’ve had the success we’ve had so far because this project represents the culmination of both of our superpowers. We’re lucky to have connected that way and partnerships can be tricky and sometimes disastrous, but for us it’s been great.”

Fun Fact

When they started the side hustle, YouDon’tKnowMyLife.com was unavailable and the owner wanted $1,000 for it…so they purchased YouDontKnowMyLifeGame.com instead. By accident one day a few months later, they typed in YouDontKnowMyLife.com and it came up as available and they were able to grab it for $10.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1541
For years Dennis Hensley was a writer for the magazine industry, mostly interviewing celebrities. He honed his interview skills over time, eventually learning exactly what to ask to craft the perfect story.

But, as the magazine industry began dying, so did Dennis’s job. With less people reading print there just wasn’t the budget to keep someone like him around. It helped that he was ready for something new anyway, so he set his sights on developing a side hustle: something to help pay the bills if his income took a hit during the change.

During this transition period, an idea struck that wasn’t all that unrelated to his old magazine work. Dennis devised a concept whereby someone could pay him to interview them. In the interview he’d ask all sorts of questions, some general, some cheeky, and some probing. Things like “When was your first kiss?” or “What was the most trouble you ever got into in school?”

Afterwards, he’d condense everything into an audio story of the person’s life. He describes it as an audio family heirloom. The idea gained some attention and he spent a couple of years launching a website and working with customers. However, it never really took off the way he hoped it would… at least not until we fast-forward to 2018.

A friend of his, Jeb Havens, worked as a game designer. After hearing about what Dennis was doing, thought it would make a great game. Instead of needing an interviewer, family and friends could pull from a deck of cards and ask the questions to each other. Together they called the game, You Don’t Know My Life.

Rather than use a platform like Kickstarter or IndieGoGo to raise the funds, they hit up every single person they knew to presell them the game, also encouraging them to share the concept with others. They created a website in Weebly with PayPal linked to it. That way, customers could pay on the spot with the promise they’d receive a copy before Christmas of 2018.

That Christmas period was significantly busier than the first and the momentum continued into 2020. Their latest invention is virtual game nights. For their existing customers they’d host a version of the game over Zoom at a cost of ten dollars per head. That generated over nine thousand dollars in additional revenue for the year.

Add that on top of the earnings the game is bringing in already and it shows one thing… Dennis and Jeb may not know your life, but they certainly know how to create a successful side hustle.

Pharmacist Cues Connections with Conversational Cards

What It’s About

A pharmacist gathers the perfect remedy for connection with her conversational card deck.

Words of Wisdom

Have a side hustle idea but not sure what to do with it? Here’s some great advice from Cherini, “Allow your idea to enter into the world and evolve. There is only so much you can do when you keep your idea to yourself. When you get out of your own way and share it with the world, you open it up to the perspective and feedback from other people and it could turn into something so much more or different than what you originally thought.”

Fun Fact

The world really is in the midst of a loneliness epidemic. Three out of five adults claim to feel regularly lonely and doing so for too long can have serious risks to people’s long term emotional health.

If that’s you, know that you’re not alone! Fighting loneliness can be as simple as connecting with a friend or being of service to others by way of volunteering.

Notes from Chris

Episode 1298
In graduate school, Cherini Ghobrial had a close-knit group of friends. They’d often spend days and nights discussing dating, travel, and religion as well as their aspirations, dreams, and goals. Looking back, Cherini views those times of connection as some of the best of her formative years.

Things changed though, after she graduated and moved back to Atlanta. Cherini, a first-generation Egyptian American, started working full time as a pharmacist and struggled to find the same deep connections. Although she was often out socializing and meeting new people, the lack of any true connections left her feeling lonely.

She wasn’t alone in feeling lonely. Millions of people everywhere are more connected yet feel more isolated.

Those people needed a new kind of medicine, and Cherini began working on a prescription. She wanted to create a tool or game that would help people move on from small talk quickly.

What she decided on was a simple card game of random questions and topics. A player would flip over a card and read out a random thought-provoking question, something like “What is something that brings out the best in you?”, and the players would then discuss the question openly.

She made a basic version with paper folded in envelopes and tested it on a few friends. They agreed that the cards helped them feel more connected and liked that they didn’t have to come up with prompts on their own.

The next play was for Cherini to have the cards made officially, and launch this as a real product. A product she called unCURATED.

With the list of questions finalized, it was time to start visualizing and actually creating the unCURATED game. At this point, Cherini partnered with a friend named Niki. Niki handled the design of the cards and knew how to keep printing costs low.

With a strong design, website to match and a few pre-launch sales under their belt. Cherini and Niki hit social media to keep marketing unCURATED. They created Instagram stories to share related content. They also found it useful to post reviews to their Instagram grid to bolster social proof.

In addition, unCURATED was also featured in the Washington Post after a journalist reached out.

From there, sales kept trickling in through the website, with each one making Cherini and Niki feel fantastic. They’re making a few hundred dollars a month so far, and they feel like they’re doing this for much more than the money. Their side hustle has given them a deeper sense of meaning and purpose by helping to move the world forward in a positive direction.
